This player sucks! It never properly decoded DTS. Sound quality is atrocious. Video showed artifacts whenever film based material is displayed. 3:2 pulldown is nonexistant. The package say's progressive scan. But picture quality say's 'NO WAY'

This is a great buy, I have had it over a year and purchased it from amazon for about £79.99. Never had a problem with it and it seems to wanna play anything and everything. Haven't tried the dvd+r yet but will be doing so soon, Just got the sony DVD burner with my New PC.

The player plays all regions and no region dvd's. In addition i know that it plays MP3's when you have created an MP3 cd with the correct software such as Roxio MP3 creator.

What I have tried are: DVD R2, DVD R1, DVD R0, VCD, SVCD, MP3, Music CD's, Cut CD's, CUT DVD-R and DVD-RW.

If you wanna chat about this player or just wanna tell me what more it can do, please feel free to drop me a mail.

Even though it doesn't play as many "non-compliant" discs as the Apex, I actually prefer my Pioneer for that very reason. I want to make discs that are going to be more compatible with other players. With the APEX machines, you can get away with a lot of stuff that won't play on anything else.

This is a good player. It can play anything I give it. However, it cuts of the first second of audio on every track on an audio CD (burned or not). This happens at the beginning of every track, unless I SKIP to another track, then it doesn't do it. This really isn't a problem, but when you know a song really well, it sounds weird not to hear the first second of the song. This may not even be the DVD player, maybe my receiver. My receiver is a Harman-Kardon AVR120 -- it is top of the line for its power rating, so for some reason I don't think it would cut off audio. Back to the DVD player...sound and picture quality is great on my Sony WEGA 27". The only thing that really does bug me about this player is that it feels cheap because it's so light, AND the tray makes a lot of noise when ejecting or going back in. This coupled with an audible noise when playing (I can still here it when the movie is playing, but only at moderate to very quiet parts of the movie). It just makes the player seem poorly made and cheap. I sit only about 5 feet from the player, so I'm sure for those of you who sit farther away or have a glass cabinet door you close, you probably can't hear the clicking when it plays. Check the forum for my question about the one-second audio thing.

I purchased this Baby on Ubid for $79.00 as a Refurbished product. I can't believe how well it played compared to my Toshiba 2109 and my Sharp. I've converted all my AVI's and Divx formats to SVCD(MPEG2) and VCD(MPEG1) and this player plays everything perfectly. I've tried converting my MP3's to MP2 format and it plays them also. For the price that I paid, you can't beat the value.

I put a piece of pizza in it today. Damn thing started to play that little caezars commercial. :) Ok maybe not, but so far this player has played everything I threw at it. Yeah, the progressive scan feature may not be the way other people do it, but it sure does look pretty hot on my Mitsubishi 55807. Last week I bought the Toshiba SD3750, and boy was I amazed that this new piece of technology was so crappy. Properly configured offered me combing and pixelization. Not what I would expect from a brand new DVD player. So, I took it back, hooked up the 434 again and realized that the money should be spent elsewhere. To all who bought...enjoy. I sure am!

Has played everything I have thrown at it. All SVCD's and VCD's I have work perfectly. Have not tried XVCD.
The quality is awesome and DVD's look great too. Also all brands of cdr media seem to work, I have tried everything from Verbatim to generic and they all play flawlessly! I think I am going to buy a second. I got a Apex ad1500 as a second player because it was cheap, but does not play VCD/SVCD nearly as well. Am going to return it and spend the extra $ on another Pioneer.

this is a good player. i have backed up a couple dvd's to svcd using 2 800MB CDs and it plays them great. noticeably better than VHS using the 3 or 4 pass VBR. also, for all you MP3 lovers out there, it DOES play MP2 encoded audio. i use a great program called MVP by QDesign. Its easy and it works. good luck.

This is my first DVD player. I’ve now owned it for just over a year, so it’s time to let the truth fly. I love the progressive-scan picture and the component outputs (looks SOOOO good on my WEGA). Digital audio is also great through a 5.1 or 6.1 decoder. The high-end hardware definitely scores a 9 or a 10; however, my standing gripes are with the little things. For instance, take the remote: it sucks! Finding the right button in the dark is still a chore for me after a year of ownership. Also, Pioneer could also have gone the extra mile to give the player an on-screen GUI, or something to make the “image” nicer—anything besides a black screen with low-res white letters while disks are loading.

The hardware really is top-notch for the price, but by now there are much better products out there in the same price range. Happy shopping.

This player rocks. It can play any type (dye color and brand)of cdr, and plays cdrw as well. It plays vcd's perfectly, even ones that aren't standard compliant with NTSC standards. It even plays PAL vcd's perfectly, without even having to hit any buttons to switch region modes. It plays svcd's at constant and variable bitrate. It was a good purchase.

Hi,
I want to comment on the player's progressive scan capabilities.
We ran it side by side with a Sony 7000. Note that the Sony is not progressive in its factory condition.
We watched on a properly calibrated Sony VPH-1270 SuperData 3 CRT front projector.
The Sony player wins hands-down against the Pioneer, even thought the Pioneer makes the line structure disappear, period.
It is in no way true that the 434 is superior to a thing like the Sony 7700. The Pioneer's picture loses all the depth and clarity and sharpness over the progressive scan outputs. E.g. the Sony 7000 will always display superior picture depth and color resolution.
You get what you pay for.
Ralf

Excellent player... if you're a homebrewer of video CDs, this player is excellent as it can play pretty much every type of CDR(RW) out there...

only drawbacks is no MP3 support (no biggie) and a slight pause during layer switch (very minor)

This player rocks. It is rock solid in playback of SVCDs, which is what I mainly use it for. The progressive scan gives you the quality of a $900 Sony for only $149. Buy.com had it on sale with free shipping, so I got one. I am very impressed. If your main focus is SVCD and VCD, I suggest this player. It will scan SVCDs and VCD without a file telling it how. It also has great sound and video quality with very intuitive menus. It starts fast and scans quickly.

I love this player! My old RCA doesn't compare.
Though I was perfectly happy with the performance
of my RCA player, VCD creation was simply N/A.
I lucked out and got this instead of the 433
when the online co. ran out of stock on the 433 and
offered me the 434 for only $154.
I haven't regretted my purchase for a moment.
It plays everything I throw at it. If you could burn a
tin can lid, this player could probably play it!
