| I've had this player for around 7 years now and it will play just about everything I throw at it. The only thing is that the DVD media can't be burned at full speed. I just got the Sony DRU-710a writer with v1 of the firmware, and I have burned 7 movies at 6x with no problems. One accidentally burned at 8x, and wouldn't play. I used Memorex 8x DVD-Rs. I have one movie on DVD+R and one on DVD+RW, and both of those play fine. Other than that, it plays movies great, and (S)VCDs without any problems...I don't really see the need to play audio cds with it. I plan on running this until it dies. |

| This DVD player is GREAT! I had this for over 6 years now, and this is the only DVD player that would play DVD+R DL burns. I was impressed due to the fact a brand new JVC DIVX player couldn't not even, and get this, the DVD burnt was in PAL format. |

| It's amazing. I recently bought a new computer with a DVD burner in it so I've been experimenting with different DVD formats to see which will make thwe most reliably playable movies. I've got an new APEX AD-1200 and a new Go-Video DVD player along with my older Pioneer. Movies backed up using DVD Shrink then burned with nero 6.0+ will play on the old Pioneer with no problem. The Go-video player plays "most" disk formats, but the apex only plays DVD-RW or DVD+RW. I was sure my APEX with mp3 and jpg-ability would be the most likely one to play backed-up movies, but it's the worst. It balks at DVD-R and DVD+R for some reason, getting into a perpetual "LOADING" or "NO DISC" mode, even though those same movies will all play on my Pioneer and most will play on the Go-Video. |

| Great player when it came out. Not so special these days, though. Component video, DTS, and support for VCD format on DVD is all a plus. No support for SVCD and poor reading of RW media is a minus. Rock solid and dependable for 5 years. |

Hello this is my first post. I love my pioneer and i bought it when it first came out. It has lasted this long and im still impressed.
Anyways i would like to report that
the 2x Philips DVD+R does not work well with this player. I tried it on other players and it works fine. Also i bought the imation 2x DVD+R. This also does not work on my player, but it works well with others.
I have had plenty of success with the memorex 4x DVD+R.

Had this player since new.. never really played with it, did burn vcd's and did the header trick and it worked.. then I got a Lg4040b burner plays memorex 4x -/+r/rw
princo 1x -r
Those are what I have tried so far and all is good. I cant belive this 5 year old dvd player works like a charm. I guess thats what you get from buying a nice brand name. |

Great player, especially for it's age, has always played every CD-R and CD-RW I've ever used (many cheap kinds over the years) but cannot get Princo DVD-RW to work.
No other problems ever. |

| I've had this one for 5 years now and it is incredible considering how old it is. I haven't tried but if the reports are true, then playing CD-RWs is great considering that 5 years ago, DVD players couldn't play even CD-Rs. However, the Pioneer DV-414 does have the twin-wave laser pickup system so that shouldn't be a surprise. CD-RW compatibility is intriguing though and I will try it out soon. On a more interesting note, while on vacation in Sri Lanka, I found some fake DVDs and among my purchases were Species 1 & 2. Believe me, if I found the originals, I'd have bought htem but here, it's impossible so I had no choice. However, these 2 DVDs have a problem - when you insert them into any DVD-ROM/player, you will just get a blue screen stating that the DVD player doesn't correspond with the DVD region code. Note that this screen is on the DVD itself and not the players. Put these DVDs in any, and I mean ANY, player and you will get this screen. However, on the DV-414, once the disc is inserted, if I rapidly press the STOP button before the DVD autoplays, the player will play the DVDs normally after just hitting PLAY. I've tried this on several players (except other Pioneers) including Sony & Philips and even DVD-ROMs can't play these DVDs back. Because of this, I have decided to stick with this player for a while longer. Unfortunately, the lack of SVCD compatibility is a sad one but even so, the player has an excellent Optical and Coaxial output and is never out of sync with the pic. It has many options too including the ability to convert any audio signals into PCM in case the particular standard isn't compatible with your amp. It handles DTS, AC-3 and MPEG Multichannel. Note though that only an AC-3 decoder is built-in, DTS decoders are absent. VCD 2.0 menus appear as only still pictures and you have to press the corresponding number on your remote control to access a particular chapter. In the end, the DV-414 is a solid DVD player and for its age is reasonably good but by today's standards, it is what we like to call a relic. |

I was really concerned about the DVD+R after getting a new Dell and the burner was DVD+R. From the reviews, I figured the Pioneer wouldn't work and I was thinking I had to ditch my great and faithful Pioneer 414 and replace it with an Apex. Well here’s the run down.
I have successfully backed up 6 DVD+R's. They play PERFECTLY. I did test the burns on DVD+RW first, and then decided to take a chance on the +R and I am glad I did.
Method used to make the DVD+R's. First of all, brand name, the only brand I have used is Maxell from Office Depot. In fact, on sale 5pk for 12.99, though I think sale is over.
Also, I did see Office Max with:
HP 5-Pack DVD+R Media, Item # 20167784 5pk of HP DVD+R for $16.99 ---- I will buy a pack of these and try next.
I ripped with DVD Decoder.
DVD 2 ONE was incredible.
Nero for burning.
I made the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and put vob files in the VIDEO.
Good luck to all...

Had this player for 5+ years with no problems. Audio never slips out of sync using optical link. Has so far played every CD-R/CD-RW that I have thrown at it. Lack of SVCD and better is the only complaint I have, and given the age of the machine, this is not surprising.
I am not planning to update until this one dies. |

I purchased this player 5 years ago, also.
I have the Sony 500a DVD burner, firm 1.0f
I have had 100% success with the DVD-R disks, burned on both my Sony 500 and a Pioneer A-04
I am Using NERO 5.5.10
I have had semi success with the DVD+RW format.
The disks play, but I get the occasional pixel screen.
I have very little success with the DVD+R format.
Out of 5 Verbatim "Super Jewel case" disks, 3 coasters, 1 that plays with some pixels, 1 that plays but about 50% pixels.
The same video footage is perfect on the DVD-R media. (Verbatim also).
My gut feeling... This older player "kinda" support +R/RW format. If you have the choice, use the -R on this player.
I have also try burning with Pinnacle Studio, same resultsw. Waiting for results with the Roxio DVD version (software in the mail)

| It is an old DVD player by today's standard, but it still plays all "standard" media (no SVCD and higher CD standards). Just tried with DVD-R and DVD-RW and they both played without problems (EMTEC DVD-R and Pioneer DVD-RW burned with Pioneer A05). |

| i paid $19.99 for this player as it was a test piece we used at work [large retail corporation with in-store repair processing. name starts with Best...]after we upgraded to a rca p.o.s., we couldn't sell this unit as new, [$400.00 msrp] of course, and since i was the only one who showed interest in buying it, it was mine. ok, on to my test: from my experience, works great with cd-r and cd-rw vcd's. burned using precision 40x cd-r's and memorex 4x cd-rw's on a lite-on 52x24x52x. |

| I've had this player for about 3 years and thought I would share my input. Overall, an outstanding player, its only drawback being the lack of supported "other" formats like SVCD. Plays VCD flawless on almost all cd-r and cd-rw media. Bitrates can be bumped to about 1300 on VCD, but all other formats, SVCD XVCD XSVCD are a no-go. Still, an outstanding product for a simple VCD player. |

| I've had trouble reading CDs and VCDs burned on Memorex BLACK CD-R 700Mb disks. These same CDs and VCDs work fine in my desktop PC, but interestingly enough do not work on either my laptop (Compaq Presario 1800) or the CD-player in my car (Alpine something-or-other). I suspect the problem has something to do with the shiny black coloring on these disks...the media look cool, but I don't plan to buy another spindle due to the incompatibilities. |

| I noticed this device does not have compatibility with DVD +RW listed. I know two people with this machine (and me). They all play DVD +RW disks I created with a Sony DVD +RW drive. I have used Sony, Memorex, and HP disks. I have not had one disk that will not play yet. |

| Sold player. Haven't experienced any drop outs in the Dolby Digital streaming...so no lose of sound at any point unlike my old Toshiba. Can't play SVCD's....but plays VCD's on almost any disc. Good player....but still like my Apex :) |
