As I reported on 11th sept. 2008, picture is excellent, but problems with MPEG-2 audio.

This is getting worse. One thing is, that the player can't handle MPEG4 movies with MPEG2 sound properly, when the source is an *.AVI file launched from the USB connector.
The region 2 version of the DVD "Mulholland Falls" from Largo Entertainment, comes with MPEG2 audio. This works through the HDMI-audio, and analog audio outputs, but are MUTE when SPDIF coax out is connected to a surround receiver. (Two different brand DVD-players works perfectly, so the receiver is not to blame).
Conclusion: MPEG-2 audio stinks, if the SPDIF coax out, is essential to you.

Worse: I have some digital tv-recordings, transferred to DVD. ´They are authored on PC with the welknown DVDauthorgui:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVDAuthorgui
Every title begins with a menu, where the button-click is intended to get you to "title 1, chapter 1" and the show begins.
Those DVD's have worked on every other equipmented I have tried, and the tool is wellknown to any videohelp user.
On the Pioneer DV-400, I get the image of the main menu, but no button to click, and there is no way I can these DVD's launched!!! Imagine that!

Those two drawbacks are one too many. I could have endured mp2 audio via analog cables, but not being able to start DVD's authored with DVDauthorgui - no way. So the player goes back to the dealer first thing tomorrow. Fortunately, regulations in my country, secures me an indisputable money-back garuantee within 14 days of sale.

Picture through HDMI cable is excellent. The best I have seen so far.

Major problem playing MPEG4/Xvid *.AVI files via USB: Whenever audio is MPEG-1, layer 2, 48KHz stereo 256Kb og 96Kb mono, direct rips from DVB-S broadcasts, audio plays perfect on the telly via HDMI. But digital SPDIF out via coax is mute.
Have tried nine different movies. All plays *avi, mp2 audio perfectly via any conceicable combination, except from this DVD players SPDIF coax out.

Best DVD Player I've ever owned!!!
It has many controls on the player itself so if you lose the remote you aren't stuck with just play, stop & pause. Handy if you've got kids and can never find remotes.
It was the only player in the store that had a USB input which is great to view files from your PC quickly without burning to disc first.
Plays DivX & XviD brilliantly either on disc or USB stick with perfect quality. Also plays some WMV files but they have to be of a particular format resolution.
I've previously had a PC connected to my TV with a TV-Out card but don't need to use it anymore as the DivX/XviD quality is way better using this player. It won't play mpeg or mpeg2 files unless they are authored to VCD or DVD. I tried a data DVD that I had backed up some AVI files but also a DVD-Video folder and it played the DVD folder as a standard DVD-Video but wouldn't recognize that there were other files on the disc.
A bit dearer here in Australia that what I've noticed of USA pricings but well worth the money.

THIS IS IN REGARD TO ZEKE'S POST
about the DV-400V being / not-being able to play MPG or MPEG files on this unit via USB or CD/DVD
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Zeke from United States reported July 04, 2007:

Does not play mpg/mpeg of the hard-disk, nor does it play DVD folders, or vob files.

Interestingly, at one point I was able to get it to play an MPG file by pressing some random keys, however I have not been able to get the same file to play again. This shows that there is no inherent limitation on playing mpg files, just some software restriction. Any ideas will be helpful.

I am still trying this player out and would like to keep it for its superior picture quality if I can get it to play mpeg file.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I SEE NO FOLLOW-UP AS TO WHETHER ANYONE HAS FOUND A WAY TO GET THIS UNIT TO PLAY MPEGS
.mpg or .mpeg

Please let us know. It's great that it plays DIVX, XVID, etc. *BUT* I edit video on my computer in MPEG-2 format and want to be able to throw stuff on a DVD or even better a USB Flash Drive or FAT32 - 100GB External HD in MPG / MPEG format and view it on my TV through the Pioneer DV-400V. IT'S THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS UNIT AND NOW I'M KINDA STUCK :_(

Zeke claims to have gotten an MPG to play by (essentially) 'accident'

I just got the deck and don't want to return of sell the unit until I know for certain that there is NO WAY that I can get it to play MPEG-2 MPG's.

Any hard facts about this issue are greatly appreciated!

Send to: flobie11 (at) yahoo (dot) com

B I G thanks !!!

for the price one of the best in class. philips are cheaper but have problems, oppo ore more expencive but dont realy offer any more functions.

the only thing it does not play is mpeg files (they need to be DVD or VCD disc to play). but personaly could care less. great divx and xvix playbeck from cd/dvd or USB that is what this is for. and it does that job great no skipping problems like philips or samsung, basically same great playback as oppo but $50 cheaper

Bought this to replace my PS2 that was skipping while playing DVDs and to play DivX and Xvid files without using SMS for my PS2. Video quality for divx and xvid is absolutely flawless without any skipping or digital 'chatter' like many other players. DVDs play great and the manual settings are easy to get to and very easy to configure for your TV. Got this one used at Best Buy for 86$ and am very happy with it. Plays everything I throw at it!

Ordered the code-free model from regionfree website. Plays beautifully, great features, but two complaints:

First, still frame in any mode except 480i produces horrible jagged lines. You're supposed to be able to freeze frame to get a better view, not a worse one!

Second, the USB reader doesn't play avi files well, the files have a lot of pauses and slowdowns.

Otherwise an exceptional player.

Very Good Player, supports many dvd formats also plays both pal and ntsc. It is reagion lock but that can be fixed with a hack. Plays mp3 and divx/xvid though dvd/cd/usb. External hard drives that are powered only by the usb hub wont work, but it will work on hard drives with external power and flash drives.

Correction from my last post.

The player will recognize a USB hard-disk. It must be formatted using FAT/FAT32.

The on-screen menu displays longer filename (but not complete filenames) and does not truncate in MSDOS style with tilda~ like some other players do.

Picture quality of divx/xvid is much better than Philips 5982/37.

Does not play mpg/mpeg of the hard-disk, nor does it play DVD folders, or vob files.

Tried won WMV file, but got an error that the video resolution of the file is higher than that supported. It played audio only.

Very few of the files and pictures would play on the test cd compaired to other players. The player will not play the higher resolution mp4 or m-wmv files. This unit is marketed as an hd upconversion player. IT IS NOT! It only upscales. Very poor definition on 1080i, worse than on a standard dvd player.
