I bought this player in 2006.
Even now at the end of 2010, it still works great.
The best built-in function; if U can call it that, is that this player can read multi-session DVDs.
I"ve recently bought newer models DV-120k & DV-410 but sadly the multi-session readability are lacking on these new ones.
I either have to burn all my avi movies in one session to watch using DV-120k & DV-410 or watch the weekly downloaded TV series on the dv-393. |

Have had this player for quite a while now and all I can say is this unit is a very great buy. It can play most of the discs I burn. Even scratched discs are not a problem with this player. Mine also came complete with both coaxial/optical out. I don't why the unit in some country only has coaxial?
If you are looking for a cheap and simple player that can play almost anything with great picture and sound, this one is highly recommended. Just don't expect any spectacular features from those hi-end's here. |

I have had this player a couple weeks now. Played some different XviD files in it and all play I have tried. Would like more options as far as changing AR of picture. Subs were cut off on bottom of screen for me on 4/3 AR XviD rips. Not sure if it was because of my 50" wide-screentv AR or the DVD players fault? I will experiment with it some more and post back when I have further answers.
Would like to say picture quality is very good with this player, much better than my old pioneer dv260.

Great! I've replaced my old Pioneer DV-366 (great also). I just need to play my DivX,XviD collection.
Buy it in Argentina, this player comes with digital optical output just for Argentina and Brazil (?).
I needed an optical output because my A/V receiver has just one coax input and I'm using it for the computer.
Good construction, best quality, impressive audio and video. Plays everything.
Just 9/10 because subtitles fonts are small (white with soft black background) even in my 34" TV and sometimes out-of-sync. I didn't change firmware yet.
Regards,

I did a lot of research in order to replace my old and good guy Panasonic DV-30BR. This forum helped me a lot!!!!
Well, follow my contribution: this player is fantastic, I wanted one capable to play everything that I burnt in my PC. I have already tried DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD+R DL; just one DIVX file cannot be played, but I converted it to DVD format and everything gone well.
I had an optical audio output between my Panasonic and my Yamaha A/V receiver, and I was upset because of every Pioneer DV-393 description that I’ve found on internet, it showed me only digital audio coaxial output, for my surprise, my unit has both an optical and a coaxial, this was great!!!!
So I strong recommend this affordable player!!!!

this is greatest player i ever see..
at first, i didnt thought this player is as powerful as it is.
this player is capable of playing almost all popular file format exists. i tried with divx3 until divx6,xvid,mpeg,mpg,mp3,wma,svcd,dat,ogg format and it plays flawlessly.
recommended for heavy user that dont want to waste time converting DAT files to VCD, or avi to DVD.
easy to use and user friendly.
if u are finding a divx/xvid dvd player, buy this one. i recommend it. the best at it's level and cheap. |

Picture quality is by far the best I ever owned. Unbelievable at this price! Just as I expected from Pioneer. No pixel artifacts or blockiness. Even in moody/foggy dark movies - no pixelation, no artefacts! Ultrastable and sharp picture. Absolutely superb!
Picture got even better after I adjusted brightness/color on my TV to lower values (was too bright and had too much color at first). And, important to get best picture out, set sharpness in menu to "softest". The sharpening filter, as in any player/tv, creates artefacts that could annoy some people like me (little shadows around strong contrast regions). Good: These filter artefacts vanish completely when switching to "softest". (On some crappier players, they stay even at lowest setting)
Plays _heavily_ scratched discs, old scratched cdr, dvd-r without ANY hesitation or hickups.
Plays mp3/avi files burned to DVD-R no problem!
You can fit thousands of mp3 files on one dvd-r with this feature. 4.5 Gb of mp3 on one disc and all playable!
Automatic "Last Memory": When switched off while playing a movie, the player remembers where you stopped automatically. This works for more than one movie. So watch some other movies, then pop old movie back in, and it will start where you left that movie. Great feature!
Possible to jump to user-specified time in movie.
Optional Bit Rate displaty (Mb/s).
Only one minus: File navigation system sucks, but what the heck - it still works, even if clumsy.
Best player I ever had, period. Great quality, a must-have at this price! |

So far, I am very pleased with it.
Feel and look are very nice, and of course it plays standard DVDs to the perfection (as far as I am concerned, as in, I don't have expensive plasma TVs that need upconverted hdmi or the likes). The graphic interface is excellent, all goes through onscreen display so everything is easy to find/understand and the remote is nice and clear. Many options are there to configure all sorts of settings, it is very rich from that point of view.
I have used many brands old CDs, including movies cut on rubbish brands a long time a go, all played without hesitation.
I have tried many DivX and XviD movies (including packed bitstream, no trouble!), with switchable audio tracks and with subtitles, and all played perfectly well.
I have tried to play an ogm movie, but it doesn't work well (didn't expect it to either): no sound, and jumpy picture. At least, something came up...
One excellent feature for me: it can convert and force the output to NTSC or PAL. I have an old TV that can only understand PAL, I can now watch my NTSC movies !!!
MP3s play too (not sure about bitrate or CBR/VBR yet), but the browser is a bit rubbish: file-names listed one under the other with max 12-or-so chars shown, no ID3 tags. It is quite clear that this DVD player was concieved with movies rather than music in mind.
My only rant: when you switch it on, it takes quite a while to wake up, and does not display anything while doing so, meaning that I often switch it back off thinking I didn't press correctly on the button. Minor point, really !
Conclusion:
A very movie-orientated player, which within the "limits" of DVDs, (S/K/X)VCDs,DivX and XviD, plays absolutely everything, very well.
I don't give 10 because of the poor interface to play MP3s, but purely from a video point of view, I would have.

I bought this DVD player directly from Pioneer before it was available in stores. I needed a player that could play DVD+R DL discs reliably. I have two other older Pioneer players that just weren't made to play this type of blank media, although they did with some success. In my quest to find a player that could, I tried three other brands first(Sony, JVC, Denon) but they had some trouble with it. All three of them advertised that they played DVD+Rs but all of them would freeze at times, the JVC wouldn't even start to play. The DV-393S has played my DVD+R DL discs flawlessly. If you are looking for a basic DVD player that can play anything you put in it, I recommend you try this player.
I use Verbatim brand DVD+R DL discs and Nero DVD burning software.
The price I paid was just over $93 including shipping and tax direct from Pioneer. It arrived with a week.
