Have you ever fell in love with a DVD Player?
cause i did!!!
I have this DVD over a year now and so far it works like i bought it yesterday...

This DVD gives a new title to DVD players!
so simple, such a good quality (video and audio).

It plays anything!
i won't be sorprised if i'll stick a leminated wood in the eject tray and it'll play it!

The fact that i bought this DVD a year ago (in Israel) and it still chewing a lot other devices today brought me rate it relly high.

Though you might be askin' yourself why i rated it 9 instead of 10...

well.. nobody perfect...
to specify few things that bothers me:

the notorious Packed-Bitstream (P-B) issue!
it seems like this DVD's chip have a problem playin' a Packed-Bitstream (P-B) video...
when you'll try to play P-B video it'll look like you're playin' a 10 PFS movie (not everyone will sensed).
tolerable, but still very annoying!

well i think i'll be really petty mentionin' that, but anyway - when loading disc it a little bit slower then other devices...

besides those two limitations - i'm really happy with my DVD.

Pros:
- good picture quality,
- handles AVI and OGM containers.
- handles video stream with Qpel,
- packed bitstreams and even
- GMC w/2 points
- handles .srt and other external subtitles.
- good DVD compatibility, reads questionable disks

Yes it has a few problems:
- the file menu is too short; need to get patched firmware to have extended file names
- has synchronization problems in .AVIs with VBR audio stream
- freezes on 3-point GMC (you can't encode GMC Xdiv)
- doesn't play embedded subtitles.
- 480p only, no 720p
- doesn't play Hdef MPEG-4s

Overall nice inexpensive player, plays ~80% of anime out there w/o re-encoding and after patching firmware you can keep long file names, recommend!

Great player ! Plays anything I have tried, and region free.
Problem is : PAL DVDs do not display on my (NTSC only) TV. This player is supposed to have a PAL->NTSC converter, but I could not find the menu in the options to force the output to NTSC, and the user's manual (in Thai) was not helpful !
Where is this hidden menu ? Can someone help ?

It's a very good DVD player.... and really cheap (but very hard to find here in Chile, only 2 major retailers carries Pioneer here). I have tried a few disks and works really fine.

Very good PAL to NTSC conversion (but remember to set your player to NTSC mode if you want to see correctly that discs on an only NTSC TV). A bit better than my old Philips 642.

Multizone out of the box. On the store I'll tried it with an 50" plasma screen.... very good quality of image, and the sound too.

If you can find it, buy it!

hey nathan...that guy at J&R is a freak...the dvd player supports BOTH PAL and NTSC dvds, u change the setting on the DVD player, Not the TV. it will play fine on your tv's... i have a 50" sony 3LCD and it plays everything great...EXCEPT for really high resolution Divx/Xvid rips..and it doesnt play straight mpegs on a cd or dvd (no authoring)thats the only down sides of this player.the philips 642 can play straight mpegs off a cd or dvd. The max res i used for divx/xvid was 624*416..i think anything higher than 740 wont play but i cannot confirm this..just tried this: 960x528.... and it didnt work..all you get us the audio and no video. hope this helps

Chipset: MediaTek MT1389EE
Comments:
I just returned a Phillips 642 and got a Pioneer DV-383 instead. The main reason was that a lot of Divx and Xvid files I have wouldn't play propperly on the 642 (yes, even after the stop-menu-play workaround). And doing the FF/RW thing to fix audio synch issues got old REALLY fast. Another reason is that even w/ modded firmware, you can't see much of the file name in the disk menu, so it's impossible to tell the difference between similarly named files. And the remote wouldn't work from across the room- I had to be right in front of the player.
The DV-383 plays everything I have (including QPel and GMC w/ 1 warp point). The picture quality is better w/ Divx and Xvid files than the 642 (I did a direct comparison) and NO audio synch issues. With a modded firmware you can see the whole file name (unless it's really long). The overall build quality is better, the remote is excellent, and it has controls right on the front, so you don't need the remote for most things if you are right there putting in the DVD. Since this is based on the Mediatek 1389 EE, there is a huge user base for firmware mods. With a modded firmware from a DV-575a it will also support SACD and DVD-A. Oh, and it's region-free out of the box. It's available in Europe as the DV-380.
Highly recommended.

This is the second Pioneer DVD that I have bought. Works quiet well.
Has a few issues with some DVD that have been "copied". These ones also had a problem on my other DVD so I reckon that is more a case of bad DVD media and/or copying than bad DVD Player.
Great little unit that looks cool too !

Very good player, with a lot of features!!

I just missed 2 things: karaoke function and capability to play XVID with packed bitstream, but this little problem can ber easily solved with MPEG4Modifier (www.moitah.net). And sometimes the subtitles of DIVX/XVID movies "disappears" when you navigate through the movie.

Good interactive menus, and easy remote control interface.

In despite of such little problems, I recommend it!
