CONS:
Often have to play with player settings (4:3 letterbox/4:3 Pan&Scan/16:9) to get disks to play in proper format.

PROS:
Front facia controls. More controls then most players, includes a directional selector (I wish more players had this). Excellent picture and sound. Comfortable remote.

MORE ON '4:3 letterbox/4:3 Pan&Scan/16:9' ISSUE:
DVD - played fine regardless of above setting.
DVD ANAMORPHIC - must be set to 4:3 letterbox to play in proper aspect.
DVD BACKUPS - played as described above.
SVCD - must be set to 16:9 despite 4:3 television to play properly.
SVCD>DVD - played fine regardless of above setting. played slightly jittery.
KVCD - played 'zoomed' regardless of settings.
MP3DVD - although shows 'long file names' they don't appear in that form until they are playing. doesn't help at all when selecting them. so for me, yes it has them, but not where it counts.

My search for the Holy Grail of DVD players continues ...

Finally!!!!

Let me tell you, this is my SIXTH DVD player in a very short time. Thank god for return policies.

OK. Before this I had JVC, Sony, Apex, RCA, Philips.

I have FINALLY found my player! DVD-MP3 with 999 file read. Yes 999. The Philips and RCA both cut off at 646.

It does not have TRUE long file name support, but 30 character, PLENTY to see whats going on.

God I love this player. Plays ALL of my backup DVD-R and +R. I really don't care about VCD or SVCD or any of that other garbage or JPEG slide shows. I mean, come on... This is for watching HIGH QUALITY movies and playing back high quality sound from CD's DVD's MP3's etc.

I'm writing this review with a smile on my face after FINALLY getting it RIGHT. The digital optical output is fantastic. Set and forget operation. I've had many players that needed to be switched between Dolby/DTS/PCM in order to play movies or audio CD's. This is perfect.

Has built in PAL to NTSC conversion. As far as I know, cannot be "region hacked" but I only own Region 1 DVD so this does not matter to me.

All I can say is, if you are looking for a player that will play ALL of your DVD/DVDMP3/CDR/CDRW, and play them well, with an EXCELLENT dare I say KICK ASS GUI / Interface, this is it!!

I love the on screen menus. I LOVE how hitting DISPLAY with a DVD MP3 in, KEEPS the display on. Showing artist/track title, time played, time REMAINING... Hell, this even SHOWS THE SONG NAME ON THE ACTUAL LED DISPLAY OF THE UNIT!!

Happy happy happy happy. Coincidentally, while I was in the store testing using, VERY VERY FEW players will read DVD-MP3. Those that do will usually stop at 646 if that. This has 999, almost LFN support, and just... Damn I'm happy.

BUY THIS UNIT. You will NOT REGRET.

Played DVD-R MP3 disks well. Has no problem with folders and subfolders on the disk making a straight burn from iTunes to DVD-R a dream. I have also fully tested DVD-RW MP3 disks as well - no problems here either.

I have been storing and backing up my music on DVD-R's for a while now...little more than unusable archives - until now...I can play them. GOBS of song files on a disk that you can play at random for days on end without repeating a single track if you so choose.

The industry is catching up, ever so slowly to what consumers want in digi-tech toys!

Oh, er - yeah, it plays movies too.

Great Player. Played everything I tried, -R, +R, +RW, Pal 4:3, Pal 16:9 outputting both as NTSC. It would be perfect if I could find a Region Hack for it. I can't find one on any of the forums. If region change not important then it's a perfect player...

I've been using a Sony 8mm CAMcorder for the past 10 years; it has starting to give me problems, so will be purchasing a new digital CAMcorder later this year. I'm also planning to convert all my 8mm-based analogue videos to digital, so purchased an ADS Pyro Digital Video 1394 DV Firewire card and an internal ATAPI TDK 420N DVD burner. Then I needed a new DVD Player to play my digital videos. This documents my experience in finding a suitable DVD Player.

1. Created MP3 VBR audio test disk (extracted from original CDs using CDex and burned to generic STAPLES brand CD-R using RecordNow)
2. Created JPEG image test disk (drag-and-drop MP3 folders to RecordNow Data Disk on STAPLES CD-R)
3. Created DVD-Video test disk 1 (extracted DVD image to hard drive and burned to Maxell 4x DVD+ using DVD Decrypter)
4. Created S-VCD test disk (converted Windows Movie Maker captured video [wmv] to MPEG1 [mpg] using TMPGEnc and burned to STAPLES CD-R using RecordNow)
5. Created DVD-Video test disk 2 (encoded files using TMPGEnc, assembled movie using IOEdit, burned to Maxell 4x DVD+ using DVD Decrypter)
6. Tried my test disks on a number of different DVD Players: Sony DVP-NC665; JVC XV-N44SL; Magnasonic DVD802-2 (problems in starting up with a DVD in the player, had to manually start at the player); Citizen JDVD3838; Panasonic DVD-S35; Pioneer DV-363; Norcent 300 (already owned)
7. The only DVD Players that sucessfully played all my test disks were the Pioneer DV-363 and the Norcent 300 (I already had a Norcent 300)
8. The Panasonic had the best feature set and ease of use; it would have been my 1st choice, it played all test disks except my DVD-Video test disk 2 (image was fine but it had problems playing the audio)
9. Pioneer DV-363 weaknesses:
9.1 JPEG: slow to load large JPEG CD-Rs (my test disk was 652MB with sub-directories and 1000s of files)
9.2 JPEG: does not maintain disk directory structure, all folders listed at same level with no way of viewing the original directory structure (which can be done with the Panasonic
9.3 ZOOM: only 2x and 4x available (the Panasonic has a variable zoom with preset ZOOMs to fit 16x9 images to a 4x3 screen)
9.4 MP3: does not show track titles, only track# (Panasonic shows the track# and track title)

Overall, I'm very happy with the Pioneer DV-363 (it plays all my test disks) with excellent video and sound reproduction. I just wish it had some of the features available on the Panasonic! (Rated 8/10: deducted 1 point for slowness of JPEG disk loading and 1 point because of lack of features).

Thanks to dvdrhelp for helping me to successfully create my first CD-R and DVD-based digital videos and in finding a suitable DVD Player.

Mainly bought this to play mp3's off of burned DVD's, works fine in that regard with DVD-R & DVD+R, burned as data disks with NERO software. Awesome in that regard, for sure.
Haven't watched any movies with it yet, but I'm sure it's as good as anything comparably priced on the market.
(note) it's fun to see sales clerks reactions when I bring out my DVD-MP3 disks and ask them if I can test their players to find one that works. They don't have a clue what I'm doing!

Well I just got this drive, my old one was a Deawoo 3000N and all I can say is hoe crap my deawoo was. Quality wise, this dvd outperform it easyly.

Tryed Princo DVD-R and Ritek G03 with no problem at all. SVCD and MP3 also work without any problem (Svcd need to be set on widescreen)

Jpeg reader is a nice feature, but it's too slow to be really a great feature, so it's just a bonus.

overal i'm very happy with this drive, I will update later when i get my new TV set

Bought this player, because I expected it to play a lot of formats and be multi-region so I could bring it to Europe one day.

I bought it in Canada for C$195. It does play NTSC and PAL movies, from both SVCD and DVD, BUT the output is always NTSC. It also takes only 110V, so if you're moving around the world forget this player. Especially as I couldn't find a region hack!
You have to change 16:9 / 4:3 settings for SVCDs to get the image correctly. This CAN NOT be done permantly, because if you watch a 16:9 movie and then watch a 4:3 movie you will have to change it back.

When inserting a CD it doesn't show the complete CD time. However, you can change the display to the remaining time.

It can show JPEGs, but not play MP3s at the same time. JPEG decoding takes forever, making it inconvenient if you want to show a lot of images, as there will be a lot of waiting time involved (especially if the images are high resolution).

I also wanted the player to play MP3s well. The "long filenames" are limited to about 30 letters, and in the box where you can choose your MP3s it only shows the first 15 letters.
ID3 defintely doesn't work, I tested it.
MP3 from a DVD+RW didn't work, while in general the unit is able to read DVD+RW. So I assume no DVD-MP3 playback possible, which is sad.
The menu for MP3 navigation shows all folders, but not the folder structure! It gives you all existing folders on the CD one below another, no matter what the folder structure on the CD is.
Navigation through MP3s is only possible with a TV connected and is slow and cumbersome. When changing a track the unit shows the first letters of the new MP3 on the little display, but it is not possible to browse through your MP3s without having a TV screen connected.

BTW: The unit is not the same as the DV-250 sold in the US at Wal-Mart, as written earlier here. This in is prorgessive scan, maybe similar to the DV-260, I don't know. Canadian Pioneer support doesn't know either.

I will bring it back and go for the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500. I need both, PAL and NTSC output and better MP3 support.

Image and sound quality appear to be good, as far as I can say it with my poor multimedia equipment.

Plays all the SVCDs that I've throw at it and this, regardless of media. Kodak, Verbatim, Ritek, CMC, Gigastorage, you name the CDRs, the DV-363 will play them.

I managed to play a SVCD file encoded with bitrates beyond the SVCD specification without any trouble (Sorry, I don't know the exact bitrate, but I know for sure it went beyond the SVCD specs). FYI, it was a 38 minute-long videofile with a 224 kbit/s audio track encoded to fit a 80min CDR.

This player has the same tiny glitch as the DV-353. I guess the Pioneer firmware programmers don't read this website. If you have a 4:3 TV, playing a SVCD with the player's default settings (4:3) will result in a squished picture, you have to go to the DVD player's setup menu and change the setting as if you have a 16:9 TV. It is a very minor but strange glitch, fixed once and for all in about 10 seconds.

Plays MP3 files VBR encoded with LAME encoder with the highest bitrate set to 320 kbit/s.

It says WMA works in the owners manual, haven't tried it because I don't have WMA files.

The player cannot view JPG files and play MP3 files at the same time, I have a CDR with both MP3 files and JPG pictures, and if the PhotoViewer mode in on, only JPG files will be detected. I have to turn off the PhotoViewer in order to enable MP3 decoding.

Picture is about the same as my older DV-343 in interlaced mode. But as soon as I turn on the progressive scan mode, the picture is slightly sharper and clearer, about as good as my first generation progressive scan DVD player which is a Toshiba SD-5109. (Sorry I don't have a DV-353 to compare in interlaced mode).

The sound is pretty good on this "value-class" player. It has virtual surround for people using the player with the TV speakers, OK for primitive surround effects. However, for people with A/V receiver, don't turn this feature on; otherwise the sound will become very echoey.

For the price paid (200$ Canadian taxes-included), this progressive-scan player packs a lot of value.

Something strange about Pioneer. It has the most DVD models with SVCD support, but they don't advertise this feature. While JVC and Panasonic openly mention Super VideoCD compatibility in their product literature, Pioneer continues to keep SVCD a hidden feature.

This is a great player, it plays nearly everything that was thrown at it. Searching around I noticed that this player is the EXACT same player as the DV-250 available at Walmart for around $80. It was able to play every VCD and SVCD I had, but it would play and Divx discs. It plays MP3s, JPEGs, and WMA, but it won't play raw MPEGs copied to a disc. A great player for the money.
