I am still impressed with this player, since it is now already outdated. Have tried DVD-R (Gigastore) and DVD+RW (RIDATA) and have not had any issues. Have had some problems with Creation DVD-R discs, allthough I believe that this was a writing software issue and not the player or the discs. Will try other formats and brands and give feedback.

It does play DVD+R DL disks, however I don't know if it plays them as native DVD+R DL, as my burner automatically sets the book type of dual layer media to DVD-ROM.
It's a good little player, but is picky about the type of +/-R media if you burn your own. Don't use anything "below" Ritek G04's. |

I bought it from .au under the impression it was region free, but it seems the box i ended up getting locked out some dvd's (foreign films).
After giving Pioneer a call, they were happy to provide a firmware upgrade to fix it, all within 15-20 mins on the spot.
Great player when released, and althuogh the newer players do have some nice advantages, with the upgraded firmware, this player is a great buy with the free dvd's and rentals. |

Good player
Rip main movies with DVDdecyptor (excellent free software)or full movies with DVDshrink (another excellent free software)
Must burnt VCDs & SVCDs with nero6 ultra. If you have poor quality DVDs & CD-Rs, burn them at a slower speed (all depend on your PC CPU, etc.)
Have fun, cheers. |

(Syd OZ)Purchase a silver version of this player on boxing day, since i was extremely impressed with my brothers black machine, especialy with the ability to play DVDR. To my surprise all the dvdr work on my brothers machine, do not want to work on my machine.. The Dvdr I have, are now been watched on my PC.... I also have an old TV that does not support NTSC, when i tried to watch the movies I get rolling and changing to PAL as the system doesn't help.
Apart from the first problem, the machine is slim and plays every other DVD I have put in it with out a hitch.. |

An exceptional DVD player. Without question or doubt the best value for money on the market today bar none!
I originally purchsed a Sony DVPNS415DVD player and I found it to be inferior to my old Sony DVPS525D. So back to the store for the new Sony.
I returned with the Pioneer after a strong recommendation from a friend.
Straight out of the box the player was Region Free! And came with 5 DVD's and 5 Rental's. It has played any format and any region I have thrown at it.
My opinion of Pioneer overall has changed dramatically. Buy this model DVD player. Since buying this one I have since purchased an additional Pioneer HTZ77DVD Lifestyle Home Theatre System. What more can be said. They are the leaders in DVD, specifically with the optical quality.

Recently purchased one of these. Main goal was to be able to play dvd-r backups amongst other things. Took a burnt disk down to store and played great. Unpacked box at home and same model would not play dvd-r. It turned out that the one I took home was an earlier version although same model and that it had different software installed.
I now have the later version and plays all dvd-rs svcds without any problems including princo 4 speed dvd-rs which were causing problems in cheapie Rowa machine. If your machine does not play dvd-rs ( which I burnt with Nero )then can be taken back to store and software upgraded apparently.
Only annoying thing I can find is that it you cannot do a time search on your svcds or if you can I cannot fathom it out. Hopefully information of use to someone.

I own this player for around 2 months now, and have been able to test several media/formats on it. I owned an Akai DV-3750, but sold it after a week or two cos it did'nt play DVD+R/RW discs. Bought this Pioneer for that purpose and it plays those well. Officially, its said to support the -R/RW format, so, even though I have'nt tried those, I'm pretty sure its not gonna have a problem playing those. Pionner seems to be good stuff with recordable DVD's, even my DVDROM (Pioneer DVD-116) officially supports DVD-R/RW, but my +R/RW discs work flawlessly in it as well.
MP3 support is great! The Disc Navigator function is cool.I also like the fact that it can show current file name and info on the track. Time remaining, time elapsed, etc etc. This player has about the best MP3 support I've seen yet. Also, I only encode VBR MP3's using Lame and the Pioneer 355 plays these well. No clicking and popping and the time elapsed/remaining is displayed correctly. Some people on this site report this player as having MP3 ID3 Tag support. Please tell me more about this, as I've not yet discovered this feature.
Media support is great as well. Plays any CD/RW DVD/RW I've thrown at it. These include Verbatim, Princo, SuperLife, TDK, Sony, Melody, HP, Dysan, Acer, Maxell and a host of other unbranded discs. No problems here.
With regard to VCD's and SVCD's, this player has its drawbacks. It plays them wonderfully, but a few of my movies get 'stuck' in the last few mins of the movie and make some horrible high-pitched sounds. I have'nt figured out why this happens, as these movies dont have these problems in my PC or in the Akai player I sold. Also, friends who borrow my movies dont complain about this happening, so I suspect its specific to this Pioneer. This happens on very few movies, but it bugs me that the same VCD's played well in my ex-dvd player.
Also, the player plays all region dvd's and I've never had a problem with any discs at all.
To summarize
Cons
1) Some VCD's & SVCD's are troublesome in this player
2) No ID3 Tag support (that I know of)
3) Lacks many features other players in its price range has (5.1 decoder, reading JPEGS etc)
3) No Volume control on the remote (my amplifier does'nt have a remote)
4) No Screen saver during MP3 playback (Are you listening Pioneer?)
5) No MP3-DVD support
Pros
1) Plays ANY media [CDR/RW] I've come across
2) DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW is fully supported (yay!)
3) Very attractive unit (I have the silver model)
4) Plays VBR MP3's flawlessly.
5) Cool disc Navigator
6) Good build quality
7) Remote hacks available for Region Free

If you are having display problems where you
are getting a picture but there it is very
poor and there is no colour, try each of the
following:
By pressing and holding in the power button on the
player and at the same time pressing one of the "skip" ( >>| ) buttons you can select the output
signal type between NTSC, PAL and AUTO.
Try each of these, one of them will probably
solve your problem.
This player has dealt with any outside spec.
SVCDs I have thrown at it well.

I just got this player recently and I love it :-)
Plays everything I want it to play, plays SVCD,VCD and MP3's and DVD's pretty well, the sound is awsome with a good decoder and reciever.
Only one minor problem I found was it plays SVCD's in the wrong size (wide screen) when you encode them in PAL format, so either encode in NTSC or just go into menu's and turn ON wide screen and it will display the SVCD correctly (I knwo wierd)
Other then that minor problem it has performed great and well worth the money.
I think it is a GREAT budget DVD player with lots of features at a great price.
If you want a hardcore DVD player that plays everything from DIVX to WMA and other wierd stuff like DVD-SVCD and cDVD etc you are better off spending you money on a more expensive DVD player, this one is meant for us normal folks who don't want to spend 1000 bucks on a player
I give it a 9/10. it does the job it was meant to do. |

| After much burnng and trial, it has shown that it cannot play dvd+r or r/w media. Have tried using dvd decryptor and nero, easy dvd... with no success on either. Disappointing pioneer. seems virtually every model but this one will play them. Swapping my 355 for a dv-555. Have tested the 555 and works like a dream.. |

Looks great super slim and works wonderfully well.Fot this price point I think its a great value for money in comparison to DV-533 and 533k.Audio and vedio are both excellent.LED display is a bit of a spoiler. It looks down right cheap other wise all features of good.Remote is well laid out and easy to use,I would certainly recommed this player for people looking for just the bare essentials with no frills and a rock bottom price!!

Region 2 Europe, only sound is working fine, display not working at all.
Thanks for any trick using the remote... |

Very god player, slim-line and looks good.
Good support for CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R. I have not had a problem reading any media so far.
VCD and SVCD disks all work – Note to self: They work a lot better when burnt as track-at-once.
Regarding the aspect ratio problem, I’m now recasting it as a feature. It will play SVCD as 16:9 and VCD as 4:3.
What I do now is burn MPEG-2 encoded files (480x576) as a VCD (with compliance turned off) this loads and plays in the unit as a 4:3 and there is no need for any tricky header hacks. The video will play correctly and the DVD player can be left with the video output as 4:3 letterbox.
If you have 16:9 format source files then these can be burnt as SVCD and will play back with the correct aspect ratio without requiring a change to the video output of 4:3 letterbox. |

I bought it for $370 Australian. It was recommended to me by Dick Smith as the one most likely to do what I wanted it for, play DVD's copied from my computer. It's great and does everything I could ask for. A great buy at the price and well worth paying the bit more for a first class machine.

After a bit more testing (although again not extensive) I managed to examine a few more formats. Was a bit annoyed at its inability to play cDVD, but then again so few set top players apparently do. Also its inability to play DVD-MP3 disks. It seems a very obvious omission by Pioneer to not include this function.
As for media, have used a few types and have had no problems. Used Ricoh DVD+R/W and Legacy DVD+R/W. |

My main goal was to test DVD+RW compatibility so sorry my testing is not more extensive.
DVD+RW does work as long as it isn't burned with NERO. I used Maestro to assemble my DVD with which I then saved to an image file. I then burned the image through DVDdecrypter 3.1.4.0.
All my dvds which I had burnt with Nero 5.5.7.2 do not work, this includes DVD+Rs which I haven't yet tested with DVDdecrypter. |
