Ok, i have had this player for a while now (as you can see i posted before). After more and more use I have found this player to be REALLY good. I have made heaps of vcds, svcds, xvcds, xsvcds and everything works. I have also used really cheap cd-r and cd-rws and expensive cd-rs and cd-rws and they all work. I have made vcd menus and they work. DVD playback is great. The sound is also always in sync in vcds and svcds (unlike some cheapo players that i have used).

The only thing is that svcds get resized strangly, although still completely watchable.

Comments:
I picked up this DVD player a few days ago for $400 AU and I have to say it's a terrific DVD player. It is multizoned and plays all my DVDs, VCDs and CDs without a problem. However, Macrovision is enabled on this DVD player despite some people saying it isn't.

While the player's physical design isn't sleek or snazzy-looking, it's the unit's features that really counts and this is what pleased me the most, apart from rewinding and fast forwarding which I'll come to later.

The disc tray opens and closes in a nice and smooth manner and doesn't spit itself out too fast. It doesn't wobble or 'jerk' and the opening/closing mechanism is relatively quiet.

Loading of discs is decent. It might be a little slow for some people, but it's satisfactory enough for me. I don't mind waiting another second or two for a disc to load.

Playback of DVDs and audio CDs is excellent, there's nothing to complain about on this front. However, the rewinding and fast forwarding of DVDs (and VCDs) is somewhat of a minor annoyance. You have to hold down the rewind or fast-forward button for a few seconds to get the rewind/fast-forward mechanism going. While the rewinding/fast-forwarding starts immediately upon pressing the button, it resumes playback if you let it go straight away. That's why you need to hold down the rewind/fast-forward buttons for several seconds. Also, the rewinding and fast-forwarding is a bit annoying -- it only rewinds/fast-forwards in a snap-shot style and sometimes causes you to rewind or fast-forward too far from where you wanted to go to on the disc. It can be irritating for those who tend to rewind and fast-forward a lot, but since I don't do that very much it doesn't bug me a great deal.

As for VCD playback, the quality isn't up to the standards of DVD playback due to the resolution size and bitrate VCDs are encoded in. But so long as you don't stare right up at the TV, then you won't have much of a problem watching VCDs unless you're an extreme perfectionist.

Another pleasing aspect of this DVD player is the fact that it can read CD-Rs and CD-RWs, thus allowing me to play my own home-made VCDs on the TV. I'd like to mention that VCD menus made in Nero do appear in colour and not in black and white, as someone reported.

The remote for the DVD player is small, but is decent enough design-wise. It's not annoying as some people make it out to be.

The Pioneer DV344 has 5.1 and DTS audio playback capabilities, but due to me not having a surround sound speaker set up, I can't comment on it.

Overall, the Pioneer DV344 is a terrific DVD player aside from the rewinding/fast-forwarding function and is definitely worth the $400 AU I paid for it. If you're thinking of getting a DVD player, then get the Pioneer DV344.

Good player.
One very interesting problem I found with it though.
If you create a VCD over 88 minutes and 46 seconds in length (possible with 90/99 min CDRs), it stops advancing at that precise point for some reason. Have tried it with a multi track version of the same VCD with no luck.
Don't know if it does the same thing with audio CDs.

Plays everything else otherwise.

I LOVE THIS DVD PLAYER :)
If you like playing VCD's & SVCD's this DVD player is for you.

It works with ALL recordable CD's I have tested / used to date (around 30 different sorts of brand name and no name so far).

My friends have Sony and Toshiba brand DVD Players and they have to use Princo brand CD-r's because that is the only brand that their dvd players can read from.
Suckers :P

It has an optical fibre port as well for digital sound (great for DTS and Dolby 5.1) :)

At roughly $420 Australian it is definately the best BANG FOR YOUR BUCK.

I highly recommend this player to all DVD, SVCD & VCD enthusiasts.

Bought this superb DVD player for $430 AUD (Australian Dollars). Also got some extra DVD's for free with it (All Disney titles, but when first came out, were all Warner and Village Roadshow titles) and free DVD rentals at Blockbuster (Damn tricky terms and conditions). Great if you want a budget DVD Player. The player was heavily marketed in stores here in Australia I have noticed and it seems now that people I know nearly all have one :). I have no idea how much it will cost you if you live overseas ( I think it said $140 something if you in the USA on that table on top of this page) or any extras with it. It just has good value written all over it. Any mistakes on this post please e-mail me and tell me.

Plays DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW. Seems to like many CD-R/CD-RW brands. Haven't tried any DVD recordable formats yet but it seems to pick up some indicated by the head table for formats on top of this page.

For audio enthusiasts, supports Dolby Digital and DTS and other stuff too.

It is Multi-Region. DVD has no Macrovision, no problems. Problem, that is these days 90% of DVD's have Macrovision protection, which I have read somewhere on the net can't be defeated on this player. Looks like if you get one, it requires a hack. The one I got will only play Macrovision titles from Region 4 cause Australia is in Region 4 where I got the player, get it from somewhere else it will play the Macrovision title depending on the country where you got the player from and the region it belongs to.

For other information just check out the Pioneer website in Australia.

Can utilise the menus for VCD and SVCD but one strange thing. Using TMPGEnc, converting some quicktime movies to SVCD, when setting the size to "fit the whole screen" and attaching a menu, the menu works. When converting and making the SVCD size "centered and original ratio aspect" and attaching the menu, the Pioneer DV-344 can't play the SVCD at all. "Centered and original aspect" size on the SVCD made with no menu attached, it can be picked up and played. Anyone know anyway to fix this up or had the same problem? Please give a buzz on here or the forums or an e-mail.

A few downers of this player is that the remote is well... it works dammit but feels "budgety" and cheap. If you are totally annoyed with the thing, get a hammer and smash it then buy a Universial Remote with DVD Support as they usually feel good. Not usually the reputation of Pionneer products in my view (Correct me if I'm wrong :) ). The size of the thing feels like one of the first video players to come out. It's damn big! Wish they cut the width more off the thing. No MP3 support, but don't count this if you have a CD-R or CD-RW, just convert and make and burn a Audio CD. Another downer is the design. OK, looks good but not sleek or nice like the others on the market.

Overall a solid DVD Player if you don't want to break your budget.

The only reason I wanted to get a DVD player was to play VCD's. And this one plays every single type of VCD I've burned for it. Every colour cd I have used has worked, (silver, green, yellow). No problems at all. No frills, but i knew that when i was buying it. The player looks cool, its got a nice silver shell, and best of all, its not that expensive, i got mine for 240$Canadian with tax.

I had a budget of 450.00 bought player for 420.00 AUD
this filled the following requirements
Multizone - all multizone disks so far worked error free. Was factory Multizone too so no warranty issues.
VCD/SVCD - I make my own using Nero and Roxio Videopack 5 (which rocks BTW) all play seamlessly all media works fine - have quite a collection of CD-r and CD-rw media - blue/silver/gold all work equally well.
Audio CD's - again no issues

Would have liked MP3 compatibility but I don't have them anywhere else - if I find a cheap car MP3 cd player then it's worthwhile.

Agree with the comments that the remote is not laid out the best but it's hardly a big drawback - have no issues that other reported about VCD/SVCD's not being able to resume when stopped - hot stop and they can be resumed from stop point by pressing play again.

Sometimes notice layer change on some DVD's (not all) - it only seems to effect some DvD's and is much less then I have seen on other models - otherwise quility is excellent.

Took copies of region DVDs and VCD/SVCD to store to test - never be afraid to take test material with you.

First DVD Player... was tossing up on whether to get a el cheapo model (Teac/Palsonic/etc) for under $300 or to bite the bullet and buy this model which a lot of people have told me "plays everything you chuck at it".

My main deciding factor was the Pioneer has the ability to convert NTSC output into PAL60. Essentially this allows me to play NTSC DVD's on my 10+ year old TV (Masuda) in color. My budget certainly did not allow me to buy a new TV anytime soon, so I thought this feature was very important for my purchase.

The original price at Grace Bros (I live in Dubbo NSW currently, and we have not much choice in stores) was $499 for the "green dot" modded version. However this sales man did not realise at first so he told me it was $479, which was the unmodded price. I asked him straigth away for his lowest price, and he did some calculations and ended up with $440 AUS. I was prepared to pay this anyway, so I bought it.

First impressions.. the remote kinda sux (as everyone has said). But thats not too much hassle. I played my PAL (Region 4) DVD, works fine. I tried my only NTSC (Asia region) of Crouching Tiger and the start works fine AND IN COLOR! I was happy about this. But later when I tried to play the actual movie it hung and spat the disc out. I'm not sure if it's because the disc has a bit of a scratch on it or not, because it plays fine in my computer DVD drive. :(
I was actually hoping that this player really can "play everything you throw at it", however maybe this scratch affected things. I can choose to play the movie by selecting chapters... but also the Special Featuers section does not work - it makes my player hang. I really want to find out if it is because the disc is scratched!

Later, I tried an old VCD that did not play very well in either PC drive or my VCD player. Although they will play it, it seem to be a bad copy (stop & start a lot). The Pioneer refused to even load it, spitting it out straight away.

Later, I tested my SVCD of Lord of the Rings. It works a charm. Everything else has been fine, but that's to be expected because everythign else I put in has always worked (either new or unscratched).

My main happiness about this player is the function to convert NTSC into PAL60. However, I'm not sure if the price justifies this player. I am sure if I spent a bit more time, I could have found a cheap Chinese brand or somethign that would play all these discs fine too, and possibly convert NTSC to PAL?

Dislikes include: cannot play certain discs (was hoping it would at least display some parts of the disc even if slightly damaged). Also no zoom function... no good fast forward/rewind (only 1 speed). Remote control sux.

I guess I should just be happy and enjoy the discs I can play, and try to keep away from slightly damaged discs.

In conclusion, I belive the price is slightly too high for this player (in AUSTRALIA at least). However, Im thinking it will be a dependable player that will last me a few years without having to purchae a new TV and also worrying that the DVD Player will break down in under 1 year like some cheaper brands might do.

First dvd player I've owned and I have to say I'm extremely happy with it! Seems a little noisy playing VCD's, but on normal DVD's it seems fine.

Even though the back of the player states that it is Region 4 only, all region 1 dvds i have rented from the local video store have worked (yay!).

Overall it's a great little player. May be no frills, but it plays dvd's (and hey, that's what counts!)

My first DVD player and I'm pretty happy with it. I wanted one with multi-region/zone capability (ex-factory) and I've tested it so far on a multitude of Region 2, 3 and 4 DVDs without problem. You need a TV that accepts NTSC 3.38 though. ON a PAL only TV, you'll get the foreign DVDs in black and white. VCDs (from China/Japan) no problem, same with CD audio.

This model has been selected as the best in its price range by a consumer mag, and an electronics mag, so I'm quite satisfied. A couple of drawbacks - doesn't play MP3, and the fast forward/reverse is not so fast.

Well, after a few weeks with this player i have a few problems with it. i hire alot of dvds from blockbuster. and the dvds are normally scratched a bit (or alot sometimes), it seems that this player has problems with scratched dvds. as i can watch them in my 2 dvd drives (in computer). it could be the player i just bought...as the box was resealed (so it had been opened). Im returning it tomorrow and probably getting another one, i will test that one and see if it has the same problems.

The best I can found in Brazil in its price range. Plays WITH QUALITY everything you put into it (DVD, CD-R, CD-RW), except for MP3.
Cons: Some people don´t like its RC but I don´t mind.
Its fast forwarding plays like screen shots :(.
Some people say it won´t show time elapsed when playing SVCD. It really doesn´t show time elapsed if you hit play, but if you use the keypad to go directly to the chapter (1 for example), it will show time elapsed normally.
Menus from Nero appear in B&W, but if you use another tool no problem.
Pros: The fastest loading system I´ve ever seen, even with CDRW.
EXCELLENT video quality (you can´t tell the difference between a DVD and a well done SVCD).
Audio is good too (I don´t have a DTS/AC3 receiver). No problem playing rented DVDs. Low noise. No problem with layer change on double layer DVDs.

This player is pretty cool. I havent actually tried any other dvd-players, but i bought because of comments on the player (on this screen) and because it is cheap. I have tested svcd and xvcd, multiple audio tracks work, but subs dont (i havent tried cvd subs yet, but i dont have my hopes up). Anyways, this player plays everything (that you really need to play) and is cheap!

All CD-R and CD-RW media and brand types, including VCD, SVCD, XVCD and XSVCD, all works fine.

miniDVD don't work, including no support to mp3 files also. Just need a special software on EEprom to support this one, aka "How to make more $$$ buying another DVD player with support to mp3".

This unit support dual system NTSC and PAL, it can even convert NTSC to PAL-60. And it's more quiet on load/unload CDs and DVDs than DV-343 and DV-535 models.

Cons:

- Bad search system.
- No mp3 support.
(Why I need to waste the laser diodes with this one? No thanks!) ;-)

For only US$ 145.00 bucks it's really a GREAT DVD player. Go! Go! Pioneer. ^_^

A great player and my first. I thought it was only the PAL version of the DVD-343 but it seems its different. Most ppl dont know this unit and it is only available in certain areas of the world such as South-EASt Asia and Australia.

You can buy this unit already hardware REGION HACKED (at the Pioneer factory)....it costs about $50 more. There is no visible difference to the actual unit...other than the box it comes in has a big green DOT about the size of a standard coin on the side...indicating "hacked". I must say i havent tried any other region's dvds yet tho.

After exhaustive testing it seems this will play svcds up to 704x576... but 720x576 is a no-go. The bit rate for svcds can creep up to about 2200 without problems but around 2300 you start to see a few "sticks" of frames in different places. Seems to depend a tiny bit on the brand of cdr...but anything over 2200 is choking. Seems to be independant of the frame size...ie i took the frame down to 480x576 but a bitrate of 2200 is still the limit. I burned my svcds with NERO.

Wont play miniDVDs ...i tried using Uleads DVD burning software thats part of Mediastudio that will burn to cdrs but no joy.

Wont play Mp3s....not ones i had on cdr anyway. I believe some players will play mp3s when theyre in certain folders only tho...mine were just in the root directory.

Seems to make a slighty noticable "whine" when sitting in a dvd's menu...but once it starts playing its silent.

Doesnt skip when changing scenes on a DVD like the 343 has been reported to...a split second skip when changing layers tho...but my girlfriend didnt even notice it.

Mine came with 5 free dvds, couldnt choose which ones tho and 3 went straight into the bin...muskateers, snow white, etc. This tee'd me off a bit.

I brought this mainly to burn SVCDS and DVDrs (when the dvdr drives come down a bit more!!) and for this its going to be rokkin!!!

Happy :)

Tested in the store with a standard SVCD. Video played but jumped at times. Not good enough to buy.
