Initially I got it to play my self-burned svcd disks. And the user-judgements sounded that this was the player I should buy in order to play self-burned DVDs as well in the future.
But when I started burning my own dvds a few months ago, using Nero as well as Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD, I lost my trust in Pioneer and its 343. It plays DVD-R/RW of several brands, but DVD+R/RW is quite a problem. It seems to me that this is one of players of the first generation that are not due to play all DVD-formats but only the format Pioneer is related to.
It is a well shaped solid state device (beautiful black and not the ugly mirror-like-kidstool-shape of today) but not equiped for the modern times.
So I ran to the store and got myself a player of the new generation (Medion 42068) and all the disks are smoothly running now (for half the price as well!).

I've had this player since August 2001 (2 yrs, 3 mo). I'm still very happy with it.

I initially got it because it played SVCDs so well. I've played lots of VCDs and SVCDs on this player, and it's handled them all virtually flawlessly.

It's also played the few burned DVDs (DVD+R) I've thrown at it.

It has had a problem with freezing on some (maybe 5%) of rental DVDs, which usually I've been able to fix by simply cleaning the DVD. I've never had a problem with freezing on any new DVDs (150-200).

My only complaints, (all of which I was aware of before purchasing this unit):
1. it's a bit loud. I ended up buying a glass cabinet to cut down on the player noise, but you can still hear it (very faintly) during quiet scenes.
2. would have appreciated multiple FF/REW speeds - it only goes one speed.
3. no MP3 support
4. 1 second layer change pause. I can live with this.

OVERALL: great unit. still going strong after 2yrs/3mo of heavy use. Has played everything I've thrown at it. A bit loud.

To add to my earlier notes:
In addition to NTSC VCDs, SVCDs and DVDs, this machine plays PAL VCDs and PAL SVCDs, but _not_ PAL DVD-Rs (I've only tried region-free, non-Macrovision disks).

Have had for more than two years now and it's always worked great. Beautiful VCD and SVCD picture -- doesn't add green artifacts like my old Sony. Plays SVCD menus and multiple audios just fine. Some brands of CD-R play noisy, but the cheap G.Q. CD-Rs (50/$7) from Frye's work great.
Lately, I've been burning DVDs and found that its MPEG audio output was a problem for my Sony receiver. The solution was to go into the DVD's Setup and change the output to MPEG-PCM.
Can confirm earlier reports it won't play AC3 audio output by BeSweet. Picture freezes after a second or two.
Plays Fuji 4x DVD-R and RiData 4x DVD+RW (burned at 2.4x) just fine. Burning on $90 Emprex drive.

bought about 2 years ago and watched almost everyday, mostly US DVDs and Chinese VCDs. No major problems but a little bit noisy. I tried to play Chinese DVDs but it did not work. The pictures were black with lines but the sound was OK. A few weeks ago, I bought a Jensen TV to replace my old GE. Suddenly, to play Chinese DVDs became possible. However, 20% of the DVDs reduce to black-white. (I tried them in computer, they were with color. When tried in a Panasonic DVD player, the sign was "no play for this kind of disc.") Other DVDs are played in perfect colors and sounds.
I hope someone may tell me why.

I have mine for 1 year and a half. It palys even chinese pirate dvd-s which most players don't. Of course it freezes from time to time, but only because the disk quality is poor(like chinese dvd-s or svcd-s) or burned at high speeds (40X). Overall it's good, i'm using it every day like cd-player and a few times a week for movies.
Reading your opinions it seems to me that it was a discontinued modell, till now i've seen about 10 dv-343's and none looks like the other on the inside. (BTW: mine is manufactured in Japan, the others i've seen were made in China or C.E.E., is this the answer?)
This would be a very interesting question to ask Pioneer.

I've had this player since June 2001 and haven't had a single major problem with it. It will play just about anything I've tried. I wish it could do MP3, but at the time that I bought it, the only player that could do both svcd and MP3 was the APEX and I heard that it had a crappy picture when there was fast motion on the screen.

There is a 1 second pause whenever the movie skips from one layer to another. From what I understand, most players will do this unless they have a read-ahead buffer. It actually takes that long for the head to move to the next track on the second layer.

I wouldn't recommend buying this particular player, however because you can get the Pioneer progressive scan player for very nearly the same price, so I would definately go with that instead. Unless I have some major problem in the future, I will buy another Pioneer player.

The DV-343 has been perfect for my needs. I've had it for over two years and it has played everything I threw at it and never given me a problem.

When I bought it I took several VCDs and SVCDs with me to the store. The movies were from several sources and burned on varying quality discs. Only this model would play ALL of them, while several of the players labeled DVD/VCD/SVCD would only play the Gold discs (not good enough!).

I love this player. It's quick and it plays everything. I hope I dont need to replace it anytime soon - it was tough to find so forgiving a player.

I have this player for quite some time now, it still runs great, accepting vcd svcd on cd-r and -rw media. Some time ago i bought a pioneer A05 DVD-R, and the dvdplayer accepts DVD-R as wel as DVD-RW. until now i only tested princo dvd-r and no brand one's :)
Note that i burned the DVD-R 's at 4x, and they ran without a glitch!

my 2 cents ;)

I bought a NEC DVD burner (ND1100) in order to burn DVD+. Burned several DVD+R disc and DVD+RW disc. All worked without any problem in my 2 DVD players ( Pioneer 343 + Philips 711).

The DVDs were burned with Nero 5.5 (Format: DVD-Video) and DVD Moviefactory 1.0 (recored the movie with Hauppage WIN-TV PVR PCI from TV).

I tried the following DVD manufactures (DVD+R: Intenso, MMore, Sony, TDK / DVD+RW: Fuji, RICOH). All worked fine for recording and in the DVD players. Even not always mentioned I could burn all DVDs at 2.4s speed. As Intenso is one of the cheapest in Germany, I have now decided

When recording from TV I decided to use 4 Mbit/s, because the quality is excellent. 2 Mbit/s is okay, but as better quality is available and everything fits now on 1 DVD, I prefer the 4 Mbit/s.

Conclusion: The DVD-burner is fantastic and I’m more than happy. Especially my Pioneer DVD player support DVD+R/+RW without any problem.

Bought in June 2001. Initially, I liked it. Played everything I threw in. But, for the last few months, (and I use it about once or twice a month) it started "freezing" for a second or so on some dvds, then, this week, I realized I couldn't play a Vcd I just made. Out of curiosity, I threw back an old Vcd I knew worked and this time, it didn't. I tried Svcds, regular Cds, Vcds and none of them work anymore. Went to Future Shop, where I bought it, they told me to buy an optical cleaner, which I did. When I put this cd in, it doesn't recognize it either (I'm supposed to get a menu and select track #3 but the cd is spitted out like any other I tried). It still reads Dvd but I wonder for how long... I really didn't expect that I would have to buy a new Dvd player this soon... And my next one wont be a Pioneer, based on the reviews I now read on this site!

A bad affair: Started sweet ended sour!

Initially I loved this player. Had everything I needed and I was happy I'd eventually be able to use component and digital outputs.

Then the problems:
12 months, warranty expires and problems start.First the door would often close immediately after opening. I got it cleaned and the problem mostly went away.

At 18 months (now) DVD's have stopped playing. First audio dies and then the video freezes. I can still navigate chapters and It'll play for a few seconds. VCS'd still work and so do CD's so it's not a motor problem. Sigh.

The warranty is over and I won't be buying another Pioneer - I won't take that chance. It's disgusting that the player doesn't outlast the standard. I was going to upgrade anyways to something with progressive, but now I can't even give it to a family member to use.

Just thought people should know ..

I bought this DVD player one year ago. It can play any brand of CDR and CDRW VCD or SVCD. Doesn't play svcd or vcd menus, jpgs, mp3s. Works great for free movies off the internet. There is NO resume for SVCDs. If you stop them they start from the begining. Only tested one DVD in it. That seemed to work - but why will I buy dvds anyways?

My initial impressions were very high. The unit played everything I threw at it except very high bit rate SVCD's. Picture quality was good and I liked the simple layout of the front. The remote is laid out poorly which causes you to always have to look at the remote when operating it. Unless of course you watch a tremendous amount of movies and have it all memorized.

I was very happy with the unit until about 9 months after owning it. I don't watch a ton of movies so the unit had fairly light usage. It at first started not playing the audio on DVD's. You would see the video but it was like the TV was on mute. Then it refused to play DVD's at all. Next up were SVCD's and VCD's not playing. Eventually even audio CD's stopped playing. Still under warranty I took it to the service center. They said it was a bad laser pickup and Pioneer was going to exchange the unit.

The exchange unit arrived and I noticed right away that the stop and pause buttons on the front panel did not work. Additionally after playing with the unit I noticed that if you rewound a CD or S/VCD for over a minute and then hit play the unit would stop responding to any and all input from the remote. Took the unit back to the service center again and they informed me that it had two bad switches and a bad IC (chip).

At this point I informed Pioneer that I would either like a full refund or a completely different model. It had been close to four months of continuous calls to the service center and Pioneer to get things resolved. They obliged by replacing the unit with a DV-353-K. Hope it works better than this one.

This is a good player, ALMOST. It played everything I have burned (CD-R and DVD-R and DVD-RW). The only time I ran into a problem was when I encoded audio into AC3 (the only way that audio will play through a digital connection). For the longest time I had authored (DVDit, Ulead Movie Factory, Spruce Up) using just the regular mpa or mpg files without conversion. But someone ran into a problem with audio when they had it connected digitally through their receiver (no audio, unless they manually went into the menu and set the audio connection differently). So the only way to fix that is to encode the audio into AC3 using BeSweet. Did that, and this player FREEZES the very first second it tries to decode the audio. I've tested the SAME DVD-R on 16 different models of DVD players in Best Buy and Circuit City and my friend's house (he had a 300 disc Pioneer DVD-changer) and NONE of them had a single problem with this DVD-R. I even tried three different brands of media (Pioneer DVD-R being one of them!)BEWARE OF THIS PLAYER IF YOU'RE MAKING YOUR OWN DVD'S!!!!!!!

Ok, this is Dean again...

Circuit city wouldn't take it, since it was past their 30 days...I called pioneer, and went through their automated message system (which worked!!!), and got the name and # and address of a local repair shop that does authorized work. I called them up, and they did pioneer warrenty work there in house (it had like 20 days left in the warrenty when it died)... I brought it there yesterday, and we'll see when they call me to tell me it's fixed. Cause I loved it while it worked, the only thing i would like to be different is for it to be a lower profile one, like the new 353. Oh well, it plays anything I stick in it almost so....

I bought mine september 2001, and have used it as my main CD player and DVD player for that time. For the first time, last night, it started ejecting audio CD's halfway through playing them. Today I woke up, and now, no matter if I put in a pressed audio CD, or a CD-R, or CD-RW, it will NOT read it, it just says no-disk. It plays the one DVD I have handy just fine still, but no type of CD media will it read, audio cd, VCD, or SVCD, that all played fine a day ago. I still have my reciept from circuit city, so hopefully I can get them do do something about it. I'm going to talk to them, and post some results soon...

Well I recieved my Pioneer DV343 back on August 26/2002 after being back and forth to the shop since May 2002. A new board was put into it and the techies say I was not the only one waiting for it in their shop. It seems that some of the original boards had a flaw and I had to wait for a newly designed board. I have now used it for a month and every once and a while when it changes scenes it seems to to freeze for about 1 or 2 seconds and then continues. This happens about once a movie. All I can say is I'm glad I did'nt invest alot of money into this machine. My next DvD will not be a Pioneer. Every time I put a DvD into this player I am not confident it will make it to the end. A co-worker of mine has a DV-333 and has no problems with it and that is why I thought the next generation would be as good. WRONG!!
I have noticed others are starting to have problems.
Good Luck
Jim

I had this model for 1 year. Recently, it will play SVCD and VCD but its having problems showing the menu. I'm not sure if its the type of disk or the player itself.

For those of you that can get the menu to appear, what type of disk(s) are you using?

Thanks.

There seems to be a pattern in here of the 343 having problems with DVDs over time. Mine did the same thing after a year. Would play SVCD and VCD but would hang on the intro file or menu of a DVD.

Just got it back from the shop so I'll report again later, but I would be careful with this model. Lots of glowing reviews but a repetitive problem like this indicates a design flaw to me.

Works with most of the cd-rw and cd-r media that i have tried. Even the cheapest. Also most any color.
I can only get it to play XSVCD at a framerate of 2kbps Which is excellent anyway. I've been doing digital video on my computer and I found the best way to get it onto Video tape is to create an XSVCD (720x480) and play it on myDVD player while I record the video tape from there.
I comes out GREAT !! I now have a DVD Burner though and will be using dvd's for that now. I'll find out shortly what DVD format works ok with it.
