Just bought this yesterday. Brought it back today. I have an AMW v101 and wanted a second player that wasn't so cheaply made. This player did well for most, but would not play dvd-mpegiso at all, disc that did play on the AMW. That was the main reason I brought it back and also that it would not play my DVD-R backup of a movie which did play in the AMW and an APEX. (Generic brand media from tigerdirect) I've read that this player does play unauthored media, but it didn't for me so back it went. Especially when for that money I can buy an AMW for the bedroom and one for work and still havr $20 left over.
Hope other's have better luck and those that already have I'm glad you found a player that is great for you |

okay, i wrote to pioneer asking about the mpeg iso thing, and here's what they said:
"we guarantee only VCD discs which are commercially manufactured and sold via retailers. For VCD discs which are created on a PC software application for personal use using CDR/CDRW discs, our DVD players may play the discs, however, we do not guarantee it.
There are too many PC software programs available on the market, therefore it is difficult to check the compatibility and to adapt our players to all PC software applications."
so, based on this, i'm of the opinion that this player does *not* play raw mpeg files, and i'm returning it to WallyWorld to exchange for a Shinco-based player. |

This is by far one of the most multifunctional players I have bought. It simply has played everything I have put into it. I have a Apex 1100W that states it will play everything, but I cannot get it to play +r's. The Pioneer also has digital audio out, so home theater users this is the one!
I've used Verbatim - Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Memorex -Ricoh, all have worked flawlessly so far. |

I got this player at Walmart in Southern Californa. The advertisement for the dvd player says it will play dvd-r and dvd-rw, but I have tested TDK 4x DVD+R media, and it works perfectly. I tried to play cd with SVCD format and it works fine, haven't test DVD+RW yet.
The manual doesn't says it supported DVD+R or SVCD format, but it works great. |

| I bought this player at Walmart for $78 to replace Samsung M301. So far I'm fairly pleased with this player. It does play DVD+R and DVD-R pretty smoothly unlike the Samsung M301. Even the disc that freeze/pixilated on M301 play fine on this player. This player has no problem using cheap dvd-r such as Princo 1X media. Movies burned on Princo disc would skip on M301 but not on this unit. Remote control does feel flimly/cheap but it has progressive scan and if you have a tv that can support pal, no problem playing pal disc (tried PAL Matrix reloaded which fails on Samsung M301 but plays fine on Pioneer). Overall, pretty solid player at descent price and it has pretty slick looking design. |

| I bought this player today based on review in this forum and mainly to play JPG files. I am very disappointed with the JPG performance of this player. It takes almost 15 seconds to render a 2272x1704 picture. This is from the time I press the "next" button until that picture is rendered on the screen. A 1024x768 picture takes approximately 5 seconds to render. This is simply unacceptable. In contrast my Philips 724 player renders 1024x768 pictures in less than 1 second. Can somebody else please confirm JPG rendering performance of this player? |

I give this player a 10 because what I use it for it works spectacular!! I play VCD,SVCD, MP3's and JPEG's all on cdr's only. I can use any brand of cdr's even the cheapest of the cheap and they work without a flaw and the only program I use on cdr's is Nero.
For DVD-R's I only currently use Ritek's 4x(G04) and they all work fine not one coaster!! Although I do put in some of the other DVDR's I used in the past in it like the Shop4Tech brand and they work just fine too. For DVD-R's I use several programs that have not let me down on this player:
DVDxCOPY
DVDxCOPY EXPRESS
DVDECRYPTOR
DVD2ONE
DVDtoCOPY
TMPGENC
TMPGENC DVD AUTHORING
All work flawlessly on this player. Plus the
DV-260 looks good and more expensive than it actually is. It has progressive scan, optical out for sound in case you have it. Which brings me to the only flaw this system MIGHT have with some of you. You need to have an audio reciever that is DTS and 5.1 ready because this player is ready for it but does not come built in. My reciever has it so this is not even a problem for me.
Honestly for $78 at Wally World, it is top with me and I am super happy with purchase! Get one now you won't be dissapointed. |

| I've been considering this inexpensive player for some time. I have an RCA and JVC both recommended here. The JVC was having problems, so, I replaced it with this unit last night at Wally World. I think it was $78.84. Two words "It's Great" I appreciate it's showing more of the MP3 name in the audio navigator. It's a little strange getting the right aspect ratio for some SVCDs though. Still, I love fiddling with the remote. So, it doesn't bother me swithching between 4:3, 4:3 pan and scan or 16:9. This unit appears to play rock solid. I appreciate the 3:2 pulldown too. I'm using TDK and Memorex 80 minute CD-Rs. Thanks to all that recommended this unit. |

I ended up buying a Pioneer DV-260 player at Walmart for $78. Now ALL my DVD-R movies play FLAWLESSLY. Even the ones on the cheapo discs.
I've used TDK, Imation, and LiquidVideo.
My old player was a Samsung N501. It was almost impossible to find good DVD-R media to burn to it that would not skip randomly on this player. In my research I learned that there are at least 3! different types of TDK DVD-R 2X discs out there (all labled the same), and only 1 type works well with this player without the skips. I have cheapy discs too, and they skip/pause all over the movie.
But with this Pioneer player, it plays ALL my DVD-R discs perfectly!
The JPEG viewer is also great! I backed up tons of JPEG files onto CD-R discs strictly for archiving. Now I can slip it into the player and watch them directly on my TV! MP3 CD-Rs play great too!
With the added features of component out, digital out, and progressive scan, this player is a GREAT BUY! |

Perfect for my needs, I was getting frustrated with my JVC XV-SA75GD (old, bad VCD cnotrols, bad MP3 GUI, terrible DVD-R compatibility rate, zero DVD-RW compatibility). For $78 (Wakmart!), this is a great replacement.
Its played everything I had at home that I threw at it - DVD Videom DVD-MP3, VCDs, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R Video, DVD-RW video, JPEG cds, Kodak photo CDs.
Zoom and slow speeds are limited, but enough. Higher end versions play DVD-Audio and/or SACD (656 etc) but I don't need that, honestly. |

| $78 bucks at walmart. I was reading a post from Wiblett earlier on this player. It sounds like he's having trouble with macrovision like he's got his dvd player looped through the vcr. Big mistake unless you know the macrovision hack. I burn dvds for a living and have found that every dvd that I throw at it works great, even crappy media. |

Well, the folks at Pioneer must listen to feedback in here or somewhere...they managed to fix everything with the 260 model that they buggered up in the 250...namely, the ability to play DVD-Video on DVD-R and RW media with special authoring.
Bravo, Pioneer, and thanks for caring about what your customers say, if that be the case.
By the way, this is the most attractive DVD player I've seen on the shelves lately, apart from the Polaroid DVD-550S, which seems to be hauntingly similar to Pioneer products. Hmmmmm...wonder if they're in cohoots...
Oh, for Oxley and others who are wondering what the S designation means at the end of Pioneer product model names, it simply means SILVER. The K usually means it's black.
Take care, folks, and happy viewing. |
