It really does play most anything! People have to remember that any dvd player you choose has it's own preference of media. So don't just try one brand of media before you give up. I have tried a few different ones and it played all of them except the memorex. My favorite media with this player is Verbatim -r's and +rdl's, but make sure it's compatible with your burner. So far I have played mp3's, Cd-r's, Cd's, dvd's, dvd-r, dvd+rdl, VCD's, and I think that's it so far.
Works great LOVE IT!

Just in case anyone was wondering about the durability or endurance of this player, I've had mine for 2 years now and it's still working as well as the day I bought it for $90, which is EXCELLENT!

Of course, I've seen the updated unit bearing the same "dv-250" name now has controls on the unit, itself, allowing you to make many settings changes without having to use the remote. It also now has an extended "continue play" memory so that you can have the player remember where you left off, insert another movie and watch it or not, and come back to where you left off on the previous movie when you re-insert the dvd. Pretty slick!

All this and it has played everything I've thrown at it. I, too, have used the display settings to properly watch vcd/svcd, but you can remedy this with how you encode the mpeg before you burn it to (S)VCD, if you want. Oddly enough, I have yet to run into this same settings problem with dvd+/-r(w). Go figure.

Keep in mind, also, the kind of reputation Pioneer has regarding audio quality. They don't lose any points in that category with this player. Video quality is surpassed only by Sony, but still more than comparable.

If you find a more versatile, durable, quality player for less than this gem available at Wal Mart, buy it immediately and blog me!

Great except for the SVCD bug. Plays VCDs and DVD+Rs fine.

Screensaver issue: If you have an expensive TV (especially a projector), then note that the screensaver doesn't always seem to come on...it only seems to work when the DVD is stopped. If a track is paused, or if the main menu of the DVD comes up, the image may burn into your TV since the screensaver isn't smart enough to activate.

Love this DVD player for the price! I don't know anything about burning, ripping, or hacking, but it plays everything I've put in it that it says it supports. Would like MPEG, JPEG, and WMA formats, but it doesn't come with that to begin with, so that's fine. Have had NO problems with store bought or rented DVDs, VCDs, or mp3s. Has played all DVD-R burned and copied discs great! If all you want it for is for playing basic DVDs or VCDs, pick this baby up!

Overall a great DVD player- especially considering Pioneer is a solid manufacturer as far as quality of build goes and it sells for less than $70. It is very thin and sleek and includes a nice, easy-to-read display on the console. Now to the more important stuff...

The DV-250 loads every type of disc very quickly. As far as compatibility goes (perhaps the most important asset to one reading this), it has taken everything I've fed it...it plays all disc types whether burnt or commercially bought (all DVD's and CD's). I have burnt at all speeds, with all major authoring programs, using most brands of media. MP3 compatibility is excellent and makes a great jukebox for a party if you choose to hook it up to a nice speaker system. Also, if you have an HDTV, it includes the 3-cord video hookup for the best picture. DTS/Dolby 5.1 ready...it has it all.

I thought this thing was good at first, I burnt a small MPEG file to a dvd+rw to see if it would play, and it did. I tried a VCD and it played it great. Tried a SVCD, AND IT FAILED. I tried following the SVCD to DVD dozens of times on multiple movies and it sux, did not work. Therefore I returned this POS. Go with the Apex 1110W. It played it fine. Other than it looks good, you have very little going for you if you purchase this.

I don't have a lot of experience with DVD players since this is my first, but after several months of use, I'm completely satisfied with it. It plays all of my commercial, DVD2oneX, iDVD and VCD movies beautifully. Audio & MP3 CDs sound great too. All brands of CD/DVDs I've tried worked but then I've only used name brands.

The only other options I'd be interested in are JPEG viewing & progressive scanning but the 260 covers those two and is now available for the same price I originally bought the 250 for at Wal-Mart ($88). I don't have an HDTV anyway so I'm not complaining.

I noticed that the price for the 250 has dropped to $69!!! This price is a steal for such a quality brand name player. But then, depending on your needs, the 260 is probably worth $19 more. Progressive alone used to be a $50-$100 premium.

Brands that worked...
CD: Memorex, Imation, TDK, Verbatim
CD-RW: Verbatim, Imation
DVD-R: Apple, Verbatim, TDK
DVD-RW: Memorex

Brands that did not work...
None yet. :)))

I POSTED A WHILE AGO AND I HAVE AN UPDATE FROM MY LAST POST. THE PIONEER DV-250 DOES PLAY DVD+R AND DVD+RW. I SEE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD LUCK WITH IT BUT THEY DO PLAY IN THE DV-250. I HAVE A MEMOREX DVD+R/RW BURNER AND I USE DVDXCOPY XPRESS FOR DVD BACKUP. WORKS JUST FINE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU AUTHOR AND BURN YOUR DVD'S. USE DVDXCOPY XPRESS, ITS NEW AND IT TAKES ONLY 2 STEPS. I USE IT AND THE MOVIES PLAY IN JUST ABOUT ANY DVD PLAYER. VCD PLAYS GREAT TO. DO NOT TAKE THIS BACK TO WALMART, ITS WORTH IT. LIKE I SAID IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU AUTHOR YOUR DVD AND VCD, SVCD'S.

The only problem I had with this DVD player is playing some SVCD with VBR. I have had some disks that are VBR encoded which failed to play on it. The same disks played fine with my other Pioneer 525 and Apex 1201. So I examined the disk in my PC and noticed that the part it got stuck on had a split second of very high bitrate (>2700 kbit) as a result of encoding in the VBR mode.

I can't stand my Apex player since it is built so cheaply. I much prefer the Pioneer quality. It's a shame that the DV-250 did not play as well as my old DV-525.

I thought it would be a step-up from my tired APEX 500wm, it isn't. It does well. I am mainly a XSVCD and VCD person. It performs well. I sorta like my 4:3 showing up as 16:9 on SVCDs. But, they should fix the bug. I can't get my photo VCDs to play.

My review seems negative, it isn't. The commerical DVDs play extremely good. I haven't tried any burned ones.My WMA Cds play, it sounds better than my dedicated CD player. I will keep it.

After a couple of days of testing this player, I am pleasantly surprised at it's capabilites for the $78 it cost me at Walmart. I replaced my Apex 600A after I fried it trying to upgrade the firmware so that it might play DVD-R/DVD+R's. The Pioneer DV-250 has played almost everything I have put in it. CDR and CDRW with MP3's, with whole filename support on screen, also played a VCD, and SVCD I had, all on memorex or Imation media. Also played DVD-R and DVD+R with home movies burned with Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2, on my TDK IndiDVD 440n multi-format burner, on TDK media that came with the burner. I will be trying DVD+RW/-RW soon, I will update later. Only thing that it wouldn't play was a cd with JPG's burned on it, kinda dissapointed there, but I can get over it for the price. Also, the sound and image quality of commercial DVD's is better than on my Apex, but then that might not be saying much..... Overall I am very pleased with my decision to go with this player.....

Best $80 I spent. I gave it a 9 because of the SVCD bug and the fact that it doesn't like CD-RW's very well. It'll play them, but when it gets towards the end of the disc, it stutters and pixelates. I don't seem to have that problem with CD-R's. As far as the SVCD bug is concerned, you could use the menu and set up the DVD player for 4:3 pan and scan, but if your watching a widescreen movie it will cut off the sides of the movie, which defeats the pupose of a widescreen movie. I'd recommend you go with the "VCD header trick" mentioned earlier. I've done this and it works flawlessly. I'll report back when I test more media.

This was the next player I tried after the Toshiba SD-310 was determined to be unacceptable (see my review of it). This is a nice player with a good feature set. The remote is poorly designed, and many of the most important buttons are in the wrong place and uncomfortable to operate (what are these designers thinking? Don't they ever try holding the remote themself?). The player had no problem with DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and CD-R. it does however have BIG problems with CD-RW. I have found FEW disks it will play. Specifically it does not like any of my disks that burn at 12X, but seems to like the some of the 4X disks I have. It did not work with "just bought" Memorex 12X or 4X CD-RW. It worked with 4X CompUSA, and old (2 year) Memorex 4X CD-RW. It has a bug in SVCD playback that plays the media in letterbox mode regardless of what the recorded media is already in (so 4:3 plays like 16:9 and squeezes the picture down, and 16:9 gets squeezed even further). If you go into setup and change the aspect entry to "4:3 Pan & Scan" the disks play properly. Annoying, but a workaround. I paid $78 for this at Wal-Mart. It's a nice player, but I'm probably going to return it and try a Sony player. The restrictions with CD-RW compatability are just to great for me. The screen saver is the word "Pioneer" in pink. It's a little sick to see! An odd color choice to be sure.

The Dv-250 reads all my cheap CD-R's which I bought from Big Lots really cheap. I've tested SVCD's downloaded in Bin/cue format and I've tested loads of XVCD's and KVCD's I've converted using TMPGENC. with bitrates up to around 4mbps. The KVCD's were 352x240 and 528x480 ranging from 300-3000kbps. My only problem with this unit is that it can't read some of my older XVCD's that have some scratches on them. The scratches aren't minor by any means, but my Panasonic portable dvd player plays it with no skipping or anything, so I guess I was just expecting the Pioneer to be able to handle it. Oddly enough however, it flawlessly played my all-region Fight Club DVD (an already-open copy which I stupidly bought in India, it was full of scratches) which an Apex AD-1500, a PS2, and a JVC high-end model all choked on around halfway through. The only two negative things i can say about this Pioneer player is that it's CD-R/RW laser is sensitive as hell and having to manually change the aspect ratio on svcd's can be annoying (depending on what kind of a mood you're in). This player was well worth my $85(with tax)that I spent at WalMart. Peace Out
