| I needed a low priced surround sound system and got this one from Best Buy. I have had it for over 2 years now and haven't encountered any problems with any media I've used. I've used DVD+R/RW's mostly from Imation, Sony, Memorex, TDK, Value (green discs from Office Max) Maxell. Only brand I had trouble with was FujiFilm but those wouldn't play on any player or pc that I have. The remote is cheesey and really annoying b/c fast forward or fast reverse is on the same button as chapter forward or reverse and which utility you get depends on how long you hold the button down. It can be VERY aggrevating. I replaced the remote w/ a universal one and am now happy. The sound is good but I don't claim to be any kind of audio wiz. Very nice system and features for the very low price. I'd buy again. |

| excellent DVD system for the price. reads DVDs burned with Nero, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and Cheetah DVD Burner. Does not read mp3 DVDs though. Ive been using Maxell 8x/4x in +R/-R, Fuji 2.4x +RW, Sony 8x/4x in +R/-R, no problems with any. |

System was purchased from Philips Outlet. The speakers in surround sound system will not thrill the audiophiles, but then what sub-$200 system would. Powered sub wasnt too bad. I like the fact that the center channel is long and thin, not boxy. Sleek unit with good looks, but won't match many stereo rack colours.
It has played all my SVCDs on various media (mostly cheap discs) converted using DVD2SVCD and Nero 5 or 6.
DVD-R, +R, and +RW have all played without a problem.
The remote is kinda cheap...I don't like having to enter the menu to find the fast forward or reverse. They should have included a button for these functions. It often takes several punches on my remote key to get player to respond...annoying.
If you need an inexpensive home theatre surround sound system...its worth a look. Compat with most disc formats and better construction that the Apex. |

| Bought mine new off Ebay for $114 shipped. Reports were good here. Been having troubles playing some SVCD's. Have used TMPGE and DVD2SVCD to convert and burn with Nero at 8x. Some seem to work, some don't work, all different types of media, but doesn't matter. Not quite sure whats wrong. Maybe I will try burning with Roxio or NTI and see what happens. |

| Works very good, has excellent quality, played every dvd-r and dvd+r's I through at it, I use nero, tmpeg dvd author, dvddecrypter, and alcohol for burning, so far it has not been picky, the media I use is verbatim, memorex, imation, philips, and tdk, so far no issues, great deal for $228, highly recomend it! |

hey I'm back. And I have more tasty tidbits. to Impart. For those of you that might run into problems burning VCDs or CD-r(w)s. Keep in mind are your writers capable of pulling those things off?. now, I used cheap CD-Rs (Imation)(memorex)and (maxell) CD-RWs. My CD burner software is Nero burning-rom and at any speed. (1-12) always let the writers do what they gotta do.
I've tried Mini DVD compatability, but alas It has not been sucessful but I'm planning to crack this case of MiniDVDs soon.
The MP3-CD mode works beautifully, however it does pick problems with songs that are of low quality, 96khs plays. but the song quivers. anything more than 96, is happy in this system. go for 128 If you download from the net. the MP3-CDs can be played in one of two ways, just treat it like a regular CD and press play. of you can turn on the MP3-CD menu. |

I don't know about teh difference between mpeg and VCD. But I tried to play a file in mpeg format burnt on CD-R and it did not play. Although the player plays mp3 files but there seems to be some difficulty with some tracks of mp3. The CD-R mp3 player disc burnt using Roxio played w/o any problems on mu computer but had some difficulty while played using the DVD player.
But overall the quality is great. Philips is indeed good at building good music systems. |

I have tried Various, most of them work. VCDs are successful. Using commercial Software to burn. I'm planning to try a MiniDVD soon. MP3-CD
is successful. Just bought the system an so far it is definately pulling it's weight. I definately would suggest buying this surround system.(Good Job Phillips!) |
