Very good player.
- Excelent picture quality
- Very good sound (through Creative labs 5.1 speaker set)
- Dolby digital and DTS decoder through 5.1 analog connections
- Dolby Prologic II system
- digital output
- Nice design
- Played everything I put into
- Reads Divx/Xvid with .srt ou .sub substitles (haven't tested .sub)

SACD player and progressive scan (havent't tested any yet)

Easy multi-zone hack

Upgraded to MTZ firmware and now the substitles work perfectly, besides file explorer now shows much more characters, making it much easier to navigate through mp3's directories.
One thing though, now it has a bug in the identification of the various sound tracks (Stereo 3CH, Dobly 6.1 and DTS 6.1, somehow it keeps adding 1 to the channel count), not important though...

I gave it 9 and not 10 for one thing, strangely to me, it's not possible to set the sound volume through the remote control (or the player itself). In all of the other players I had, the remote had two buttons to increase or decrese the volume... :/

If anyone knows how to do this I'd apreciate if you could tell me how

A great buy in the end

LOUD ticking sound during playback. Depends on media played, low (almost unnoticable) with dvd-video, clearly heard with CD, heard from 4-5 meters with cd-r music playback, especially dts cd.

Looks like the drive can't control rotation speed factor, and an audio cd is read a few sectors at a time, then SEEK for another sector, making the seek noise. about 2 ticks a second, going up if you increase oversampling rate. Found no way to shield the noise. Completely unsuitable for music listening.

Picture quality is great in itself. But it places a green dot or short line at the top of screen in 16:9 mode displaying playing PAL. (with RGB connection through scart, didn;t try other connections.) No dot on NTSC.

The internal decoder and analog output can't be switched off, only set to multichannel or stereo. Indicated with an annoying blue led (I neutralised it with a sticker). The stereo setting in NOT REMEMBERED, next time you switch on, it reverts to multichannel.
If you use the digital output, and any 2-channel source (cd, mp3, 2 channel track of a movie), it doesn't send the material RAW to the SPDIF, only if you switch to the mentioned stereo setting from the multichannel. Can't guess what really happens in that multichannel setting, conversion to some multichn format, then mix tgether again for the digital out? The result is something you definitely don't want to listen.

I just could't imagine an expensive player like this could fail in the most basic areas easily covered by decade-old players. Shame on Philips for letting such stuff out the door. Maybe time to fire the all the deaf people at the QA department.

Good player.

:::::: "Highlights":

x) Wonderful picture and sound on all formats!
x) SILENT player, regardless of what format is being played. There is only some low ticking noises that you can barely hear.
x) Fast indexing of discs. My player took 8 seconds to index a disc full of DivX, XViDs, SVCD MPGs, MP3s and JPG files mixed in a lot of different folders.
x) Plays DivX and XViD without any problems.
x) Plays XViD with packed bitstream quite smooth.
x) Nice interface/easy to work with/self-explaining.
x) Lots of features and options in the menus.
x) Easy regionfree remote hack as specified in these forums...
x) Nicely designed and with a nice price on it.
x) Good remote with which you can access some of the features directly with one button only, instead of going into the menus and select it first.

:::::: "Downlights":

x) Bad filebrowser and filenames display with official firmware.
x) Bad DivX/XViD subs with official firmware.
x) Bad material quality on the player. feels plastic and cheap (wonderful to look at though, and the remote does'nt give the same cheap impression).
x) No selection of Divx/XViD subs...
x) One of the worst screen backgrounds I've ever seen.
x) Some options is not being saved (like audio), which means you have to select it mauanlly again the next time. It's not so irritating, considering that it is done with only one push at the remote, but it is still a drawback.
x) On Screen Display is pretty cheap. Some options and modes are only displayed directly on the players display. Not on the screen.

Overall, I'm satisfied. This is a good player. The bad stuff I described regarding the official firmware can be fixed with the latest Mtz firmware. With that firmware in it, the player becomes superman.
Some other things with the Mtz firmware is that when you switch the player on and off, the display does'nt show "Philips" any longer, but "New Age" upon power up, and "OpenMTK" on power down. (the Mtz firmware is based on the OpenMTK-teams New Age firmware). hehehe...
Neat stuff. Why did'nt they change the ugly screen background as well while they were at it(?)...

Some questions remain. have not tried XViD with Global motion compensation or quarter-pel, so I don't know how it acts with files like that...

I bought this player to play DVDs and especially MP3-CDs and I am VERY DISAPPOINTED with it!

The following points I'd like to mention about MP3-CDs:

positive:
+ The player shows album, artist and title on its display.

negative:
- It is always only possible to play MP3-titles from only one album (= folder), after this the player stops. That means on an MP3-CD, that has several albums on it, you can always only hear one and then you have to navigate to the next one manually. The same applies to the random function: it is NOT POSSIBLE to let it play titles from the whole CD at random, only always from one folder.
- The navigation to another album (= folder) is only possible with the remote control AND the TV. That means to choose another album, you always have to switch on your TV.
- The DVD-player produces "BLOB"-noises frequently (about every 5 minutes) on random positions (not always the same) and on MP3-titles that have absolutly no problems on other devices. The manal only says, that these 'jumps' are normal with this DVD-player.

These points are completly inacceptable for a DVD-player in this price range. Once I had a cheap chinese one, which did not have this problems. All I want to do now is TO GET RID OF IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

DISAPPOINTMENT

I bought this player in hopes of a good Philips-product, mainly because Philips never disappointed me before. Well, there is a first time for everything.

Yes, the player plays all the formats it promises, no worries about that. So, whats bad about it?

SOUND: the player has a very low sound volume. This is really strange, most DVDs and DivX/Xvid-movies were so quiet, that I had to louden the volume at least to the double. When finishing viewing a movie, and then swithching over to ordinary TV, the high volume could have ruined the loudspeakers. Very strange.

DIVX/XVID: when playing these files, the drive makes a "clicking" or "ticking" sound. I am not sure if this was the case without subtitles, but with the subtiles, I had to listen to this annoying sound thoughout a whole movie.

CONCLUSION: do not buy this halfdone product. There are better ones out there, and I can not recommend it.

Upgraded to firmware v.33 and got huge audio sync problems when watching Star Trek TNG episodes on region 2 DVD.
there was the sync problem between picture and sound, and the picture haltet for a tiny moment every now and then. (seemed like the player tried to repair the sync).
Downgraded to version 31, and the halting was gone, but there still is a sync problem between audio and video. NOT GOOD. I'm quite irritated that I tried to upgrade in the first time.

I own this player since a few hours and the following issue is annoying me a a lot:
I cannot set the audio output permanently to simple "Stereo" output.
If I put in a standard audio CD, the unit always switches first to multichannel surround sound, indicated by the very
irritating blue LED.
Has anyone found a way to set the output permanently to "Stereo"?
I don't (and will not in the near future) have a surround system.
