Comments:
- A bit noisy.
- Has a tendancy to shut off sometimes when fast forwading/reversing.
- Jerky sometimes with very dark scenes (own recordings only).

I have the DVP632 version, which is black.

Just bought a Plextor 755A recorder for my PC, and tried with Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x (#43562) discs:

Recorded at 2.4x = everything fine
Recorded at 6x = read problems at layer change +/- 5 mins. Reads fine in the Plextor drive though.

So, stick to certified writing speeds.

Hello,

everything is said about that player. Eats nearly everything!

But one ULTIMATE TIP I have for playing AVI Files:
I don´t know if someone has written this, but I write it here because I think that workaround is not known well:
While playing AVIs (divx or xvid) sometimes i got the following problem. After playing some seconds audio was stuttering. After Pause and Resume some seconds played and it was the same problem. The Video-Parameters couldn´t be the problem, because other Files with the same Params played well. This problem occured only with some AVIs, more often with AC3 audio.

After searching for the reason i found it and I was very happy about it:

If the sound interleaving is not divisible by frames in whole numbers this problem occurs!
You can check this with GSpot. Open the file and look at the frame Container at the left part of the window. Check the line Interleave. The value before vid frame is what I am talking about. This value must be an integer to play well on my Philips DVP 630.
If the value is no integer then read on.
The workaround is to use VirtualDubMod. Open the file, select Video/Direct stream copy. Go to Streams/Stream list. Righ-click on the stream and select Interleaving. Preload 500ms was fine all the time but that´s not what we searching for. Important is the value Interleave audio every. Here must be an integer value and selected must be frames - NOT ms. The standard value should be 1. This is ok, i mostly use 2 or 3 - this saves a little bit space.
All done with VirualDubMod 1.5.10 and GSpot 2.52.

Hope this will solve some playing probs. It would be nice if someone writes here if this workaround was succesful.

With this solution I didn´t find any divx/xvid-AVI I couldn´t play. Expect QPel with divx and xvid and GMC with xvid, of course.

Great player
...and sorry for perhaps not perfect english.

Bye

An addition to my previous comment;

some divx/xvid sometimes look really choppy, unwatchable, but the trick with presseing the system button and then back, solves this too. At least sometimes.

I've made some conversions from divx(xvid) to DVD to get around this choppy couloring but now I'll try this trick instead.

Plays most avi files, but not QPel encoded and not very high res. Occasional glitches on mpeg1 playback since latest upgrade. Divx/xvid playback more reliable than before. Lipsynch on VBR audio on xvids sometimes is a problem - may help to pause/unpause or rewind and resume to correct. CBR audio less problematic it seems.

Other than that a very good player.

I have downloaded the hacked firmware for Greek subtitles from http://www.alec999.tk/, which KyriakosMetal has suggested in February.

Does anyone know if I can continue viewing english or french subtitles as well when I install this hacked firmware?

And another question: does anyone know where I can download the original 1109 firmware?

Thanks for any help.

Played almost everything i've put in it. xvid, divx, mpg, mp3, dvd-+r several brands. Subtitles, srt and sub, works fine with firmware 1119, I think it is. (not 0112).

I'm actually amazed! Just some very few xvid have been unplayable and some have had sound problems. (some unsynced sound can be remedied by pressing the system meny button back and forth)

I can recommend this link: http://fer.peque.org/avicheck.htm
for an app that checks for xvid settings in files. As far as I understand the ESS chip have problems with some settings in the Xvid format like B-vop, Qpel and some more. I'be played xvid files with B-vop settings though.

It would get a 10 if it wasn't for the lack of version history of the firmware files at Philips website. And for lacking gray shadow on divx subs.

And I'd like to ask this if someone knows what the latest firmware is, is it 0112, or what?

After 7 years with Sony, I got tiered of DVD's that did't play or crashed somewhere around the end of the movie... therefor i bought this DVP630, mainly because of the good reviews here on this site... and boy am I glad I did! I have played movies on the Philips, wich the Sony did'nt even start up on.

The DVP630 also plays Xvid movies, but I have problems with flickering and bottom-lines, but since i bought this player for DVD's mainly, I dos'nt matter.

Also, it's in the cheap end - and worth every peny.

It seems like Philips is gonna stay for good...

Bought this player specifically for playing DVD+R DL. Had some problems playing DVD+R DL at start (some played some did not), so I bought a burner with BitSetting (BenQ 1620), ugraded to the latest firmware (B7U9) and since then it reads all the DVD+R DL I burn (I only burn on Verbatim branded disks).

Despite the very stylish look, this piece of hardware has problems playing DVD-R supports of different brands. Whatever is the format e.g. DVD or DivX initially it seems to run fine but at a certain point it hangs up. I`ve seen some problems with the quality of Xvid format too. No problems by playing the same movies with the DVD player of my computer.
The firmware is the 1109 version but looking at the last comments on these pages I`m a bit reluctant in using the latest version. I`m actually quite disappointed with my purchase and thinking of returning this DVD player and choosing an unbranded one.

Video component output is OK: if you switch on the progressive scan, on your LCD or plasma display you can see dvd movies with 576 lines non-interlaced (576p). Very low price (89 euro).

Subtitles: OK
CD-R with DTS audio tracks: OK

VERSUS:
- one scart only
- unconfortable remote
- few buttons on the front (no ff, rev, skip next/previous, eject)

Shadow divx subtitles trick with multiple files on disk

"Whenever the player goes into NO MENU mode, it scans the inserted disc for all
types of known files and then assigns each one of them a number. While doing
this we can see "PLEASE WAIT... " blinking on the screen.

1- We set the player to MENU ON mode and then browse the menu and check the
numbers that have been assigned to each file (We should also browse subfolders).
2- Set the player to NO MENU mode and when the first file of the disc starts
playing press STOP.
3- With your remote, enter the number of the subtitle file (found on step 1)
and press OK. A small hand will appear on screen and then press SUBTITLE
button. You will read DIVX SUBTITLE SELECTED.
4- Now enter the number of the video file and press OK on your remote. The
movie starts to play.
5- Now press SYSTEM MENU twice like on first procedure.

Same, but for disks with one movie file:

Steps:
This procedure works with discs having only one video file.
1- In Navigation Menu, select the subtitle file by pressing SUBTITLE button on
the remote.
2- Instead of pressing PLAY, press DISC MENU button on the remote. By doing so
the player starts playing the movie into NO MENU mode.
3- When the movie starts, press SYSTEM MENU button. Configuration Menu will
appear so then press that button once again so the movie continues playing.
4- That's all! Subtitles will appear with a translucent black shadow."
