By far the best player for the price. Hacked firmware by vb6rocod highly recommended. USB 2.0 and divx means no more authoring or burning DVDs.
Just copy your movies to your thumbdrive and stick it in the front. Impressive USB speed. USB port provides much amperage and will power any solid state, and most USB mechanical hard disks on its own.
RCA Coax audio out, DVI out. Composite video outs, component stereo/video outs.
Highly compatible with many formats of physical media and codecs alike.
Better than most $200 DVD players Ive owned. |

Good upscaling via HDMI output. Better HDMI negotiation capabilities than the 3960 player this replaced. (I can only test up to 1080i.) Some artifacting on MPEG-2 files played directly from DVD-R, not terribly distracting though. Could be due to more accurate reproduction than on 480p Pioneer HDD/DVD recorder.
Does a great job on questionable DVD+R DL burns. This (and my 5982) are the only players I have which will play these movies to completion.
MP3s play fine. ID3 tag information shown on right hand menu block. Stock firmware only displays short segment of filenames, will seek updates.
Does not recognize Quicktime video in MOV containers.
My unit had trouble playing MPEG-2 files from the USB port. The same files on the same flash card played great on my 5982. I suspect that my 5992 is faulty and will exchange. I bought this mainly to play video archived to HDD so this feature is important. I would rate this an 8 or 9 if that worked great out of the box, as it did on my 5982. Hopefully my exchanged 5992 will do so. I expected better performance from the 5992s USB 2.0 port than the 5982s USB 1.1 port.
In any case, this is an excellent low cost play anything upscaling player.

Summary: good upconverter, USB port displays mediocre jpeg images but loads fast
Since there are no reviews yet, here is my quick review. Good upscaling to 1080p of DVDs. Maybe not quite as good as the Samung 1400 blu-ray I had (and returned, another story), but better than the built-in upscaling of my TV. I can not compare to other upconverters. Has many features (DIVX, MP3s) etc that I have not tried. The player powers on quickly and loads the DVD quickly.Has HDMI output, digital coax, lacks SVGA and digital optical out.
I did use the USB port for jpgs. The player insists on outputting the images at 1080i, not 1080p. This may be a problem as I'm not sure if the resulting image has 1080 lines or 540 lines (with each line doubled for a total of 1080). Whatever the reason, the images are not nearly as detailed and rich in color as the images are when I plug my USB flash drive directly into the TV's own USB port. The player does load the images several times faster than the TV does (5 seconds vs 15 seconds for 6 meg photo). The slideshow feature displays each photo for 5 seconds then loads the next photo (another 5 seconds for mine). The timing is not adjustable.
