I could not find any shuffle or random mode for mp3's. It only plays them in sequence. Moving through the folder directories GUI (graphical user interface) is only available with the remote control. The DVD itself only seems to have these 5 buttons:
1. power on/off
2. open close
3. HD upscale
4. play/pause
5. stop

Not bad for $50USD,I was suprised how good the PQ was for a cheap player.
The picture controls allow you to adjust brightness, contrast, sharpness and color. So far it's played everything fine.
Here are a few tips:
To check firmware:
Press SETUP
Navigate to [General Options] menu
Press 1 3 7 9
To open/close the tray press and hold the Stop button for two seconds.
Philips players use .BIN files for their firmware so you just burn as data, when updating don't touch the player until it powers off.

Good upscaling via HDMI output. Better HDMI negotiation capabilities than my 3960 player. (I can only test up to 1080i.) Some artifacting on MPEG-2 files played directly from DVD-R, not terribly distracting though. Could be due to more accurate reproduction than on 480p Pioneer HDD/DVD recorder.
Does a great job on questionable DVD+R DL burns. This (and my 5992) are the only players I have which will play these movies to completion.
MP3s play fine. ID3 tag information shown on right hand menu block. Stock firmware only displays short segment of filenames, will seek updates.
Does not recognize Quicktime video in MOV containers.
Even though the USB port is only 1.1, I had no trouble playing my MPEG-2 recordings from a flash card over the USB port. I could FF/REW without trouble. This actually works better than the USB 2.0 port on the 5992 I got a few days later (suspect a faulty 5992 unit, will exchange).
Like the 5992, this is an excellent low cost play anything upscaling player. |

this DVD is almost perfect, bad for the very simple user interface, and the display should display the tags of mp3 as sony´s ones.
I bought one at SAMS Price Club, it used to work smooth with my xvid/divx movies, an a 4GB Kingston USB DT100 drive, but later didn´t recognize anymore this model of drive, so I returned for a new one and, this one didn´t recognize it. I´m gonna try another 4gigs models, the ones in other sizes (1,2 gb) worked fine.
it is almost perfect, but i have not progressive output via components.

I read about the Firmware version 37.07.56.22 being found at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp5982_37/
the files DVP5982_37_fus_eng.zip and DVP5982_37_fus_aen.zip that are dated DEC2007. There are some people that have claimed to installed it and on have longname file support on the USB HDD connections on the AVSform.com website.

OK, so I've noticed there is a difference between models, which seems to be based on vintage.
Units manufactured in December 2007 (at least) provide a 16 character display from the USB directly out of the box - no upgrades needed. The firmware displayed is 37.07.56.22.
Units manufactured Aug, Sept, Oct 2007 (at least) truncate the file name as previously described (filename~1). These units are also unaffected by either the Phillips firmware patch or Ryan's hack. The patch I found on the Phillips site only raised it an increment above 34.xx.xx.xx
I've gone through 5 models now, and found two that give a 16 char filename, both Dec vintages.
I'd suggest checking the serial number prior to purchase. The manufacture date is nicely printed on the bottom of the unit.
Serial # KX3A0750.... - December 2007
Serial # KX2B0738 & KX2B0740.... - Sept & Oct 2007
This might be a Best Buy thing, but there's also a BATCH number printed on a sticker on top. Both of the "good" units are from this same batch.
H064904 - Dec 2007
G315509 - Sept 2007

Overall for the pricepoint and feature list, I think this is the best DVD player I've used yet.
There's a hacked firmware here that enables long filename amoung many many other ammenties.

| Just bought this player & discovered that it will not play any of my Staples -R, HP -R or Memorex -R DVD fomatted discs. They come up as "Unknown Disk". They will play if they are DIVX format, but not if they are DVD's. Seeing as I have over 200 of these disc, this is not good. All of the above mentioned will play fine in my DVP642 & my friends DVP5960. I bought it primarily for the USB feature. It works fine with both my 1GB SanDisk Cruizer (reformatted to get rid of U3) & my 2GB PNY. I checked the firmware & it is the latest. Has anyone else had any problems playing certain brand discs, especially those mentioned? |

Wow---for the money, the Philips DV5982 is excellent. I tried four other players, all of which were more expensive---and none of them offered the same playback quality and DivX compatibility.
Three things you'll want to keep in mind:
_ The remote has no fast-forward/backward keys; instead, you hold Next/Prev for a couple of seconds to start fast-forward/backward, then tap them to increase the speed multipliers. Similarly, there's no Open [tray] button; instead, you hold Stop for a couple of seconds. These may seem like a hassle, but you quickly get used to them---and fewer keys make the remote simpler.
_ The disc tray is not actually "flimsy", as some people have described it; it's just a bit shallow. When you insert a disc, just be sure it's sitting in the depression, not hanging over it, before you close the tray.
_ As other have noted, the DV5982 is a bit slow to spin up. But really, so what? You're willing to watch a two-hour movie but you can't wait a few seconds for a disc to start? If you consider this a reason to avoid this player, I suggest a bit of meditation. :?)
This DVD player is a terrific deal. I recommend you snap one up.

Good things:
1) My number one concern was that the Philips remote would conflict with my Philips DVD recorder, but that was not the case. There is no conflict.
2) It played some Divx discs that my Philips DVD recorder would not play.
3) Matches the styling of my my Philips DVD recorder.
Minor annoyances:
1) The way the disc fits in the tray is weird. It kind of feels like the tray did not open far enough.
2) I don't like the remote. The position of the track forward and track reverse buttons are particularly annoying since they are not in the same position as other Philips remote (for the DVD recorder). But overall, the remote does not fit in the hand very well becaise it is kind of small. And it seems to want to slip out of my hand like a bar of soap.
3) One Divx file I played was not as smooth as on the other player. Smooth pans sort of stuttered instead of flowing smoothly. It wasn't that it had trouble playing the file, it was the way it doubled frames in order to match framerate. I believe my other player does 3:2 pulldown for progressive sources.
4) NO S-VIDEO OUTPUT!! WTF?
BTW, the other player/recorder I refer to in this post is the Philips DVDR3455H. I wanted both in the same room because when the recorder is playing a Divx disc, it will not record a show to the hdd. But I had great concerns that this new DVD/Divx player's remote would conflict with the recorder (and vice versa). |

I was looking at replacing a Pioneer that stop playing DVD9's and decided to pick up the 5892. My DVP 5140, despite some minor annoyances, had played pretty much everything and is still going strong. I was most interested in the USB connector on the 5892.
The first thing I notice when installing was the Digital Audio port only came in the coax flavor. This was my fault for not checking but I was annoyed a bit. What happened next really disturbed me, I power up the unit with the included remote to discover THE 5892 USES THE EXACT SAME REMOTE AS MY 5140! The only difference between the two is the Mute button on the 5140 replaced with the USB button. Clicking the power button on my 5892 remote and watching my 5140 also startup had me a bit livid. It was not a deal breaker as I planned on moving the 5140 out with a disc changer but I am still scratching my head as to why Phillips could be so stupid.
Checked some DVD's with both 5.1 & DTS and everything played fine. I then tested some DIVX files on some DVD+RW discs without playback problems. Picture and sound appeared fine.
My old 5140 had a problem where if you paused something the screen saver would turn on after a few minutes and within 20 min.'s the unit would shutdown. /sarcasm on "Glad to know the 5892 has this nifty feature! "/sarcasm off. Maybe there is something I am doing but both players seem to ignore the Sleep settings. This of course is a problem considering that once the unit goes into standby it won't remember jack when it restarts.
At this point I was eager to test the USB. If this worked as I hoped then everything above would be just minor annoyances. I had a 60 GB HD in a NexStar case that I decided would be a good test. I partitioned and formatted the drive to FAT32 using SwissKnife V3.22, http://www.compuapps.com/download/swissknife/Swissknife.htm. Copied over MP3, DIVX and a VOB test files. I checked XP's Mange Disks to verify it was FAT32 and I checked the Event View to make sure no strange errors popped up during format and copying. Everything was golden. The 5892 saw the drive immediately, I was very thankful to say the least. Played some MP3's without any issues. Moved to my Divx test and everything appeared to work great except for .5 second pause every few minutes. While this did not create sync problems it was a noticeable stutter. The same files played perfectly fine when played on DVD+RW. The VOB test was worse but I was expecting those test results. As mentioned in other comments this is most likely the USB speed. This to me is the deal breaker.
I was hoping that a firmware upgrade might clear some issues but my player out of the box is 37.07.32.40 and as of this writing that is current. Going to give it a day or so before I return it and get the cash back so maybe something will change. I will gladly update this review if something does change.
Sorry for the long post, hopefully someone finds at least some of it useful. Last FYI, looking at the very nice user manual I noticed that they clearly state; "A total of 300 folders and maximum of 648 titles can be supported". Maybe that is the limitation of FAT32 but I thought this should be made clear to anyone looking at purchasing this unit. |

I have been a happy user of Philips DVD players for some time, having at owned several models. Yes, I have had minor cosmetic issues in the past with the overly small and lightweight remotes, and the not-so-great on screen menu layouts and design, but overall they have delivered a quality image. I recently bought two Sony Bravia HDTVs and decided to go with this upconverting Philips model until I see how the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war plays out. I have been astonished by the fidelity and quality of the image of regular DVDs played through this unit! Although my Bravia's only support 1080i (and not 1080p) I am still amazed by the detail this unit seems to tweak out of SD DVDs. Also, the footprint of this unit is tiny and matches the base of my Bravias in color and size, so it's a perfect design fit. I have not an issue with the on-screen menus. They are far better than previous Philips models. Also, the remote is the new-style design (where it looks like an actual product designer and not an engineer figured it out... but it's still small and a bit too light). My only complaint is that the upconverting happens only via the HDMI output. My Bravia's only have a single HDMI input, so I had to sacrifice that to the Philips DVD player, and use the component inputs for my DirecTV HD signal. I use quality cabling and could discern no difference to the DirecTV signal. I also used a quality HDMI cable and the DVDs I've played are pretty breathtaking with the upconversion. I watched Pan's Labyrinth recently and there was astonishing detail in the foliage especially. I plan to watch the (non HD-DVD versions) of the Planet Earth series and hope they are almost as spectacular as the Discovery HD Channel broadcasts. (Sorry, I just couldn't handle the Sigourney Weaver voice over on those, and had to get the original Attenborough versions!). Bottom line, if you want to wait out the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war, then buy this for $70 and enjoy what you've been missing in your SD DVD collection! Also, I receive and play a lot of commercially purchased DVDs from the UK. With a simple series of remote control commands, I was able to unlock this player and make it region-free. It even handles the PAL conversion flawlessly! Try doing that with many Sony and other models!

| Everything I've stuck in this player has worked. The region free hack I got off this site works. Had some freezing issues (Divx)when I first got it but after upgrading to the most current firmware from Philips I haven't had any problems. Even put about 300 home videos in MPG format from my Sony Cybershot camera on a DVD and it works great. I did an extensive amount of research before I bought this player and haven't been disappointed. This site and the people who are a part of it are a huge asset to people like me who have just enough knowledge to be dangerous. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. |

Not having optical audio out hurts. Also, when using HDMI you can only enable digital audio out to analog, or coaxial, or HDMI - no combinations.
My problem is - SOME DVDs I own marked as "widescreen" do not play correctly. The picture is stretched from left to right, but is too narrow vertically (squeezed heads). Other DVDs play correctly - any idea what may be causing this? My old JVC played the same DVDs without any problems. |

| I Have the DVP 5960. I just wanted to let everyone know if you use Norton Partition Magic you can format a hard drive as large as you like in FAT32 or whatever format you want. I am using a FAT32 250GB with My 5960 and it works flawlessly. I hope this helps. For the record the 5960 is a fabulous player and I am sure the 5982 is too. |

I purchased a DVP5960 3 months ago, then just purchased the DVP5982 in hopes of the DVP5982's new USB2 would allow faster transfer rates from an external disk connected to it's USB2 port. The DVP5982's USB2 transfer rate is minutely faster than my DVP5960's USB1. I have not found any practical difference between the two units or their USB ports (besides the case color). The DVP5982 is almost identical performance to the DVP5960. The DVP5982 is advertised with USB2 and the older DVP5960 is advertised with USB1 but they work almost identical in performance. I am reposting a review that I had made for my DVP5960, with the slightest of alterations for the DVP5982, (mainly substituted model names and changed the TIVO Best recording bitrate lag time from .5 sec to .2 seconds.) This DVP5982 still cannot play my TIVO Best recording "Best=5.8 Mbps" without pausing every 3 seconds. I was hoping the DVP5982 would be better that the DVP5960 to meet my needs to play my .mpg-2 TIVO recordings and DVD backups directly from an external disk and bypassing the need to burn them to a DVD but the DVP5982 USB transfer rate is not fast enough yet. If you can purchase a DVP5960, then I would do that before buying the DVP5982. If not, then purchase the DVP5982, both are excellent DVD players.
This DVP5982 player plays everything I have thrown at it on a DVD. Backup movie DVDs, mpeg files of various vibrates, jpg, mp3, DVDMP3. I have other DVD players that play "most" everything but for the money, this player is great. Plays back-up copies of DVDs on all brand DVD (&RW) media so far. Perfectly plays grandson's scratched DVDs that other players stopped playing. Picture is great, same as other posts, standard Composite & Component give a great picture and upscale 1080 does work for even a slightly better picture. Hey, it is not a Blu-Ray player but for a sub-$70 unit, this unit is well worth the money.
I can use this DVP5982 for my TIVO backed up files. I use Direct Show Utility to change my .tivo files to .mpg files. I found that an external "My Book" western digital 400 gig disk is pre-formatted in Fat32 (plug and play). I copy files on my computer to the "My Book" disk and then I just plug the "My Book" disk into the 5982 USB port and it reads the complete 400 gig. You can move through folders with the remote and select any .mpg or mp3 and play it. (Both DVPmodels filename 8 character length can be a challenge when viewing on the TV screen) Video plays exactly as the original recording looked from my Tivo. The only problem is that Tivo can record in 4 different quality settings, Basic. Medium, High and Best. Both DVP players cannot play the BEST recordings from their USB port because the USB ports transfer rate cannot keep up with the higher Bitrate (more data per second)
According to info from Google;------------
TIVO video is recorded at 2/3 D1 (480x480) resolution at 29.97 frames per second with constant-bitrate MPEG-2 at one of four bitrates:
Setting Bitrate
Best 5.8 Mbps
High 3.5 Mbps
Medium 2.6 Mbps
Basic 1.47 Mbps
----------------------
I found that the "My Book" disk connected to the 5982 USB will play all Tivo recorded settings EXCEPT the "BEST" quality. The Best recording plays jerky because the 5982 USB cannot keep up with the higher transfer rate. It Plays 3 seconds then pauses .2 seconds while the 5982 buffer catches up to the transfer rate then plays 3 sec, then pauses .2 sec, and so on, not viewable. The 5982 also plays jerky like this if you try to play DVD files directly from the My Book disk. (but the same BEST quality .mpg files play fine if copied to a DVD or DVD RW, then play the DVD in the 5982)
For me, the quality between TIVO's Best and High quality is negligible so I will now set all my future Tivo recordings to High and just put them on the "My Disk" external disk, then move the usb connector to the front usb port on the 5982 to play them on the TV)
I can buy a $1000 HD/BluRay player and I can still find something to grip about but for less than $70, the DVP5982 is well worth it.
Ok, the remote is a little stubborn and you have to slowly-deliberately press the buttons but it works ok.
AND FYI;
I formatted a different external disk but with multiple FAT32 partitions due to XP's maximum 32gig "Fat32" format size limit, the DVP5982 will only recognize one of the partitions. You can format any disk with larger FAT32 partitions with an old Win98 PC (or use a "My Book" external USB disk)

Bought this at Best Buy in Reno as an exchange for a 5960 (I have 3 of them - one for the bedroom, one for the kids and for the living room). The third one was only purchased 2 weeks ago - and I had not opened it when I saw the 5982 advertised.
BB were as accommodating as ever and I went home to check it out. Unit is Black this time - with a nice tray action and all light and airy production. USB port in the same place and the outputs all seem the same - so far so good.
I updated the firmware with the Philips one and made it region free (all thanks to Videohelp.com!!). So it came time to try the USB with my WD portable 160Gb hard drive - which works a charm on the 5960. It did not work - no response. I tried my 60Gig and my 40Gig - all 2.5" and none of them fired up - all of them work on the 5960.
Now the tricky part - I connected the USB cable with a double header I have for low power situations - and it worked. If you have an externally powered hard drive (especially the big 3.5" units) then I am sure it works fine. I did not notice any great improvements over the picture quality and worst of all - the signal for 720p was not recognized over the HDMI connection - it kept switching back to 480p.
I got tired of messing with it and went and got my 5960 first thing next morning. the 5960 works just fine for me and I feel that unless you are plugging straight into 1020p for this unit it is not worth changing from the 5960 for.
I am sure Philips will get it absolutely spot on sooner or later - each time they seem to improve one or two things. I started out with the first 642 and have kind of been happy with them. The 5960 for me is the best unit out there - a good balance all round and has some extra juice on the USB port.
BTW - use the freeware directory sort program to make the USB drive keep the files in the order you want them. Also keep the drive in good order and defragment it regularly - this really helps with 'jerky' playback on both units. |

Well I also owned the DVP5960 which is the same thing except it the 5960 only supports 720p/1080i and there are a few sound options and other unimportant additions with this player. The playback with xvid is better, the 5960 had choppiness problems. It is very sleek looking, black, they just had a firmware update which im sure is going to help. I bought it for 63 dollars @ Best Buy on sale and its a GREAT player for the price. Very impressed. Has a USB port, plays everything you throw at it, HDMI.
