Plays everything I have asked it to. Region free in seconds. Easy firmware upgrade. OK so the tray is a bit slow to read but thats its only downside I can find.
I watch xvid movies from a cheap memory stick through the USB all the time. Even the upscaling is good. Using HDMI connection gives far better picture in 720P than scart on my TV.

| This player will NOT play anything encoded in DIVX of any version or settings. It plays ALL XVID AVIs that I have tried. I updated the firmware to Philips latest, and applied region code 0... Still won't play any DIVX encoded AVIs. Otherwise it seems to play OK. To be honest the Box & the documentation do NOT claim any MPEG4 or AVI capability. But it still plays XVID AVIs with no dificulty. |

This is great player. I'm using it instead 5140 (reason why I change player was need for HDMI output). I dont find yet from my collection files what it isnt playing. (Exept high resolution Divx files 800x432 but such files dont play no one regular standalone).
Why then 9 points when I'm so satisfied? Reason is for me so unconfortable remote and too long time when DVD player recognize that tray is empty. |

Have had 2 examples of this model, both had to go back. Apparently due to faulty workmanship on the connection of the board to coaxial digital out the sound first crackles and then drops out. The same cable and receiver was tested on a LG DR175 recorder through the digital coaxial connection not a problem.
It is just that this player is cheap in every aspect, the feel and the cheap plastic touch can be seen everywhere, also it's OSD leads a lot to be desired. It looks more suitable to a player made in 1997 not 2007. I have now traded for a Grundig GDP3560 it does everything (except 1080p it only has 1080i), but does it far better and it is only a little more money. Sorry Philips, but you are now the maker of cheap crap, what a shame. |
