Hi,
Noticing people having trouble with the USB connection.
I have stuck a 120G USB HD on here and it worked 100%
(Make sure your file format is FAT32. It won't work in NTFS)
Thought I would let you know.
PS, Am I assuming if I create a 1080 res(HD). divx file it "should be playable??? |

| I bought this because my 642 didn't play .sub format subtitles. This one plays this format all right. It also plays .srt, but those subtitles are small. If you have a 2 file divx film it automatically plays disk two, but you have to add subtitles for the second disk with the remote. The picture is very nice. The remote is really cheap & has a bulb on the bottom that you have to aim at your machine. Another thing is you can't just push eject & have the machine come on automatically like the 642. You have to push the power button, wait for it to load & then you can eject the disk. It also has very few buttons on the front panel so you have to use the remote a lot. Of course, you have to deal with it's aiming too. |

I have been reading/asking about DVD players for months now looking for a perfect one for me. I originally stopped on the Philips DVP-642 but then i found out about this new model, which has more support and better remote.
I went and got it yesterday and here are my impressions.
- Very nice design ultra slim and sweet looking
- Played all my DVD-R DVD+R, CD-R discs even very very crappy quality ones that other players would skip on.
- Fast load
- Picture quality is very good
- Supported PAL/NTSC on the fly, I didnt need to change anything for it to play PAL on NTSC TV.
Overall its an awesome players. Im giving it a 9/10 because it did not play 1 thing I tried to play in it, but that is because it was recorded in a bad non standard format, downloaded off the net. |

Very happy with this player so far, it puts black bars on 2.35:1 content on a 16:9 TV, which I am very happy with (the LG 191h was $40 and couldn't even do this).
USB is awesome, no need to reburn stuff every time I get a new file to watch. Have played typical Divx/Xvid so far without any problems and the quality is pretty good considering its Divx/Xvid to begin with.
Very very good player consider the price, I took back the LG 191h and saved $40 and got a player that actually works right, so I am very pleased so far. |

Very pleased for now. I was able to hook up a 250GB USB HD and play MP3 songs and avi video files. No long file-name support so finding the right episode isn't easy but the navigation keys on the remote allow you to skip through files fairly quickly. There is a pause of a few seconds whilst the player scans the next file before it plays.

| This player has played every format that I have without a problem. Homemade DVDs that a Toshiba player had difficulty with play flawlessly. However, I had to hook this player to my TV using a HDMI-DVI connection as my HD TV (again Toshiba) had only DVI. Problem is, no sound through the single cable, therfore, needed to add audio cables to get sound. |

Don't buy that shit! The only features that is important for me is the USB port. Did not support a
usb 40 gig HD. There is no S-Video output. I had the Curtis DVD-1084 witch is a better player for the half of rhe price. |

| Good news to everyone! It DOES send the DTS stream to the digital output! When I upgraded my DVP5960/12 (region 2 version) to the latest firmware it started to send DTS audio stream to the digital output. Also DD stream out bug is fixed when HDMI is used. I see the the same list of fixes also in the latest firmware instructions for the US model DVP5960/37. |

So far it's played everything i've threw at it. I'm in the middle of watching a DVD full of Divx's and they have all played perfect without any loss of sync, now this could be because they have mp3 audio on them but i'm not complaining.
Will try and get a hold of some Xvids with ac3 audio etc.. and will see how they play.
I've no need of use of the HDMI at the mintue cause i don't have a Plasma/LCD HDTV. Play's all DVD's perfect and the region hack works 100% as well.
Also it seems to play Dual Layer +r discs perfect when it comes to the layer change whereas my previous DVD player a Philips DVP625 either would not change or it would take ages for the change.
Was bought from Dixons in The UK for £69.99.
So i'm giving it 10 across the board

Pro: HDMI Upscaling to 1080i, DivX playback, Progressive Scan.
Con: Remote, USB 1.1, No DTS pass-through support, PCM only when using HDMI.
Conclusion: STAY AWAY! There are many more capable players which support everything. Look at the Oppo players. |

I have noticed some users mentioning the PCM audio when using HDMI cable. But, when I tried I got DD5.1
I just tried with the default settings. I hooked up my LCD HDTV to this player with a HDMI cable. Hooked the coaxial digital audio out from TV to Receiver. There it is, DD5.1 sound.

I initially bought the Philips dvp642 but replaced it with dvp5960. I'm extremely satisfied with dvp5960. I think the extra 20 bucks is worth it.
dvp5960 pros:
- Multiformat playback (particularly important to me is its VCD and divx capability). Toshiba in the same price range (available in Costco) was also able to play VCD and dvix, however, it won't play DVD+R(W).
- The video is not cut off as much as dvp642 when the player stretches it to fit the TV.
- Better zoom feature (e.g 1/2x, 2x, 4x); the dvp642 only has 2x. The 1/2x feature in dvp5960 is particularly useful to show the whole video (i.e. hardcoded subtitle that may have been cut off).
- Remote is also better than dvp642.
- Play my bad VCD and DL DVD where my toshiba and apex choke on.
- Able to play divx movies by connecting my usb hard drive (Western Digital 80gb).
- The region hack listed in videohelp.com did work.
Cons:
- Won't play some of my xvid movies. I'm getting an error message stating resolution is not supported.
- Wish it plays rmvb (not a real con given that other dvd players don't have this capability, too).
All in all a great player. |

Hi guys,
for those unable to select a (higher) resolution via HDMI (like Darren from the States), the problem is most likely NOT the TV or the projector.
The problem is the CABLE!! I suppose that those who have the aforementioned problem bought a cheap HDMI cable (I made the same mistake).
So the solution is easy: Buy a high quality HDMI cable and you won't have this problem anymore! If you are doubting this, carry your unit to the next appliance center and try it out.
Beside that, I can highly recommend the PHILIPS DVP 5960 if you are looking for a cheap DIVX player with upscale function and a great working USB hub. |

Had the player one day. Tested SVCD, DVD-R, VCD and xvid. All play perfectly -- something I was crossing my fingers on having only used pioneers in the past.
Media tested:
CDR- Fuji, Ritek
DVDR- Tayo, Ritek
Needed to pick up a divx/xvid capable player, this one fit the bill nicely and for $70 it's a deal.
Haven't played with the USB port yet, but if it supports a hard drive.. that'll be nice.
The upconverting works.. supposedly. I don't really see a difference, but I didn't see one when I first picked up that samsung either. Well, it looks a hair better, but nothing to write home about.
Picked one up for my dad as well. I've got a 57" Toshiba HD and he's got a 60" LG LCD RPTV. Video quality is superb on both.

The Philips plays back 4:3 dvds in their original aspect ratio in 720p via HDMI (and also in 1080i iirc). Actually, I cannot get it to stretch the pic proportionally when in 720p via HDMI - it plays back in "wide" mode (for 16x9) but not in "panoramic" (stretch, etc) on my Vizio LCD. The old JSI 4127 player had a stretch mode built into it that fed a stretched signal to the TV via HDMI. But that is not a function, for better or worse, on this Philips. So the assertion that the player is to fault for not correctly displaying 4:3 material via HDMI above 480p seems incorrect, at least based on my experience.
For those unable to select a resolution via HDMI, that's not what happens on my set up. I am able to switch between 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i without problem. It sounds like there is something in your TV/monitor that is prohibiting certain signals from the Philips.
With the exception of being forced to watch 4:3 AR in 4:3 via HDMI in 720p or 1080i, I'm quite happy with this player thusfar. The above complaint is not really a major quabble since I should be viewing 4:3 material that way anyway. . . But it would be nice to have a stretch mode available. I am also very surprised that it does not pass DTS signals. But since this unit is used just with the TV speakers, it's not a big deal for me. And as for not playing HD or HiRes DIVX files, what standalone does play those??? It does a pretty decent job playing back DIVX/XVID even with a packed bitstream. But as some have reported in avsforum, the 5960 does not like QPEL and some other types of compression. |

I just got one of these with an HDMI cable and I can't get the HD upscaling to work. It seems to be stuck on 480p. In the HDMI setup, the only option I can choose is Auto. EVerything else is greyed out.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Also, the photos look pretty lousy. Comparing the same image to my computer screen, no comparison, the TV looks dreadful!
I've also got a couple of AVIs that don't play. Says resolution not supported or something like that, but the audio works. Any ideas?
Thanks.. |

FINALY got my 1st DVD / DivX Player.
Plays DVD and DVD-Rs without issue. Mostly, it plays my XviD files over 2 gigs with AC3.
I'm still working the the USB port and an external HDD. Wish it was USB 2.0
As far as the HDMI only pushing out PCM audio only, I don't see that as a big deal. Unless your TV has HDMI 1.3, you can't get dolby digital 5.1 out from the TV anyway. So, I have the digital out from the player to my receiver for 5.1. For late night TV, I just use the TV speakers so PCM 2.0 audio is fine.
Its a great player, and I may get another for the bedroom. |

What the hell is that? I can't get DD5.1 with HDMI on this piece of crap? I even called Philips and they confirmed it. That is absolutely ludicrous. |

I am returning this DVD player after less than a day of use for the folowing reasons:
1. It does not support DTS out. I thought this to be a standard feature on all recent players but apparently it is not. This is unforgivable in a modern player.
2. The player has several cheaply made components. The remote is small, is missing desired functions like fast forward, the disc tray is thin and flimsy, and the on screen menus look pretty bad.
3. Although the upscaled picture looks good on my 52 inch LCD projection set via HDMI, standard 4:3 images are forced into wide mode. This can be corrected by switching the player into 480p mode but if possible I would like to be able to upscale 4:3 DVDs and be able to view them in the proper aspect ratio. This may be a problem common to all upscaling players but as mentioned above, I have other reasons to return this player.
The player does do a great job of playing xvid/dvx files off of a DVD-R and was slow loading JPEG files. It would not play HD DIVX files with a resolution of 960x544 but then again it doesn't claim to be able to play these. |

I've had the Philips DVP5960 for 2 weeks now and have found no problems. The rumors that the DVP5960 has corrected all the bugs that plagued Philips DVP5900 appear to be true! Also, the DVP5960 produces a much better picture than the Philips DVP5900 or DVP642. The DVP5960 is "DivX Ultra" certified. I am very happy with the DVP5960. Highly recommend this unit!
This DVP5960 uses a 12 bit 108 MHz video system instead of the 10 bit 56 MHz system used in the Philips DVP5900 and DVP642. The 12 bit/108 MHz video system produces visibly sharper images and more natural colors. The picture is equally great whether you use the HDMI connection or the Component Video connection. The quality of the picture on my 42 inch Plasma HDTV is very impressive.
The DVP5960 has a USB connector on the front panel that can accommodate a thumb drive or a flash card reader for viewing digital camera images. You can produce a slide show in SD or HD format. The SD slide show is very good. The HD slide show paints the images to the screen very slowly.
Using the "display" button on the remote, you can view a graphical and numerical display of the bit rate of the disc being played.
The DVP5960 chipset appears to be Mediatek.
The HDMI feature will probably be most useful on larger (50 inch or larger) HDTV's.
HDMI sends the video to your HDTV in digital format. This eliminates the digital to analog video conversion in the DVD player and subsequent analog to digital video conversion in your HDTV. In practice the benefits of eliminating the analog video stage are only barely apparent on the largest HDTV screens (50 inch or larger).
HDMI also supports video upscaling. However, the video scalers built into most $2000+ HDTV's should perform better than those built into a DVD player. Furthermore, the use of a DVD players 1080i or 720p video upscaling may force your HDTV into widescreen mode which will make all the people in some videos appear short and fat. 576p is, according to the DVP5960 users guide, strictly for the PAL system. Consequently, the use of 576p produces undesirable results when viewed using the American NTSC system. That leaves 480p as the best choice and you don't need an upscaling DVD player for that!
The DVP5960 does not support Digital Theater Sound (DTS). You will need to select Dolby or some other audio format if DTS is the default on the disc you are playing. The "audio" button on the remote control can do this selection. DTS is not common in DVD's. |

| This is an excellent dvd player. So far it plays all my divx/xvid files and normal dvds with beautiful picture quality. HDMI upscaling is nice and it plays jpeg burnt on a cd or dvd. Some people might not enjoy the fact that gmc isn't supported, but a very small number of my files are gmc. Another main part of this dvd player is divx 6.0 support, although I didn't try it yet, this is one of the earlier divx 6 dvd players. |

| I've had the DVP5960 for a week now and have found no problems. The rumors that the DVP5960 had corrected all the bugs in the DVP5900 are true! The quality of the picture on my 42 inch Plasma HDTV is very impressive. This DVD player is even better the Philips DVP642. The picture is great whether you use the HDMI connection or the Component Video connections. The HDMI and upscaling will probably be most useful on larger (50 inch) HDTVs. This unit uses a 12 bit 108 Mhz video system instead of the 10 bit 56 Mhz system used in the DVP 642 and DVP5900. I am very happy with the DVP5960. Highly recommend this unit! |

| Very good so far, upgraded from 642(which still works great after almost 2 years)for the Divx Ulta features,HDMI and JPEG HD.Only thing that is lacking in my opinion is the n "step" button and only supports usb 1.1. |
