Comments:
I found no improvement in the picture using the DVP5900 HDMI and upscaling feature. The high cost of the HDMI cable added to the cost of the DVP5900 could have bought an excellent high-end DVD player that would probably yield visible improvement.

Most projectors, flat screen LCDs, PDP(Plasma) and projection TVs have Video Scalers to upscale the 720x480 DVD image to 1280x720 or 1920x1080. Some better HDTVs may have better Scalers than the DVD player. Component video connections with progressive scan may appear as good as HDMI with upconversion.

The degree of compatibility between progressive scan DVD players and HDTVs varies. The purpose of progressive scan is to eliminate interlace artifacts. Some better HDTVs may have better 3:2 pulldown and film mode detection than the DVD player. Try the DVD player with and without the progressive scan feature to see which produces the best picture.

I tried 2 different DVP5900 units and neither would play new commercially pressed Music CDs. I have other DVD players that played the same Music CDs perfectly.

Comments:
Some reviewers have seen no improvement in the picture using HDMI and upconversion. The Philips Plasma HDTV used by some reviewers incorportates 'Pixel Plus' or 'Pixel Plus 2' technology. This technology is already upconverting the picture to near HD quality. There is little or no room for improvement. An upconverting DVD player is not necessary. Component video connections with progressive scan will likely be as good as HDMI with upconversion.

Fixed pixel displays (Plasma or LCD) with less advanced technology will probably do better with an upconverting DVD player and the HDMI connection.

The problem with not playing Music CD's on more than one sampling of the DVP5900 is troubling. Probably a lack of quality control. Hopefull this will be corrected.

The DVP5900 is an attractive unit with many fine features.

Comments:

I bought the Philips DVP5900 after having an excellent experience with the Philips DVP642. I paid $99.99 for the DVP5900.

I expected improved video from the DVP5900 with it's video upscaling, HDMI, and 1080I. I found that the DVP5900 picture quality using the HDMI and 1080I output to a Philips HD Plasma television was no better that the Philips DVP642 using it's component video connections.

The DVP642 produces a very good picture without video upscaling and HDMI. And, I don't need an expensive HDMI cable.

Furthermore, as previously reported, I found that the DVP5900 would not play music CD's without locking up the machine after a few tracks. DVD does mean Digital Versatile Disk if the machine will not play music CD's. The DVP5900 is not a "play-all" machine like the DVP642.

I will return the DVP5900. I have learned that just because Philips put it's name on the excellent DVP642 doesn't mean everything they put their name on is worth dragging home.

What a disappointment! Name Brand recognition is worth nothing!

Looks nice & shiny. Has a lot of trouble with dvd-r´s with labels on them. Plays fine without labels. Can't get resume function to work (really annoying). Very slow to start. Open & play buttons don't start-up the machine. I'm not so happy with it. Bought it for the HDMI output to be future-proof and the only other machine in the store with HDMI was a Samsung HD850 which looks awfull.

Bought the Philips DVP5900 for $99.99.
Picture quality for commercially pressed DVD movies
played throught the HDMI on a HD Plasma is about the
same as any good DVD player using component video
connections.

VCD's yield picture quality through the HDMI about the
same as any good DVD player using component video
connections.

Music CD's freeze up after a few tracks. New
commercially pressed Music CD's from well known
manufacturers play poorly and lock the machine after
a few tracks.

After problem with music CD's I returned the unit and
got a new one. The new one had the same problem with
Music CD's. I tried many Music CD' which all play
fine on my other 5 DVD players. The Philips DVP5900
is sick.

No point in trying any further tests. The Philips
DVP5900 is full of bugs. Philips should be ashamed
to market this unit with insufficient testing.

Plays anything i have thrown at it. Even plays poor quality DVDs that my Philips 634 wouldnt play.

Have only a single complaint. Has a poor conversion from NTSC to PAL, which causes stuttering in the sound. Requires me to change TV & DVD-setting to Multi. Then it works flawlessly. I prefer not to do this though as the television makes a highpitched noice in NTSC/MULTI mode. :(

The one i got&brought back, was a dud ! did not play most of dvdr's i guess it was a production failure, but a new replacement player same model, tested by the store people was only slightly better and played only 4 out of the 9 dvdr's i had gave them, discs, that played perfectly on my "old" DVP 632... also a Philips player, so for me ...no Philips player anymore before tested in the store before buying.
