Hi, have been using this player for a few months now... plays most divx/xvid material thrown into it. Must say I'm generally quite happy with it.
On the previous comment about "lags" in playing FF7-Advent Children.. it is of no fault of the player - it just doesn't take packed bitstream. This "problem" can be overcome fairly easily by unpacking the bitstream using a software "motiah mpeg4modifier" found here: http://www.moitah.net/
Of course, you have to ensure that the file is not of openDML format - which is not supported by this application. To go around this, you can use applications like Virtualdub. Hope this clarifies. :)

| I just bought this player 2 days ago. This player has no problem when playing DivX and some Xvid files (eg: Anime - Bleach) so far. However, the video became lag when i was playing slightly higher resolution Xvid files like "Apple Seed" and "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children". The lag only occured in certain area where the player needs to generate many high res picture, especially while the video is showing the scenery of a city (3D rendering). The lag did not occur when I play the exact same files with my comp's DVD-ROM drive. |

| I still think that this player has a Mediatek chipset as the manual says it plays Qpel and GMC. Other than that, excellent picture. The sound modes make an ordinary TV sound pretty good. Even attempts to play ogg and gets quite far before freezing :) I cant believe its a budget player. |

Starting with the looks.....I have not seen a sleeker player than 5500S just 4 buttons at the front panel with ofcourse the open/eject button....the LCD is crisp n clear but does not give u multiple simultaneous information. The tray is even more sleeker.......but the problem is....... in trying to make it sleeker the groove in the tray in which the media is hooked in is not of sufficient depth.....result is the media sometimes slips out when the tray is moving in....other wise the tray is sturdy and does not give you a too fragile feeling.
Now for the real thing.......The very first DVD I popped in was my Matrix reloaded and waited.......got the "Region not supported error" mmmmmm obviously the player is not region free.......but not to be disappointed.....to make this player region free was a piece of cake.....below are the instructions....
Power up DVD player.
Make sure there's no disc loaded inside the tray.
Then go to the system menu, select preferences.
Enter 135566 with your remote and press ok.
A region code selection will appear. Press up or down to select 0.
Press ok and you now have a multi-region player...................source www.videohelp.com
so now all the DVDs were playing nicely.........and what ever I popped in next be it dvd-mp3, dvd-wma, dvd-jpg, dvd-divx/xvid played effortlessly........I even placed a couple of raw mpeg1 and mpeg2 files on a CDRW and it played without any glitch. So this means you don’t need to create the usual VCD/DVD for those copied/Ripped mpeg1/2 or .dat files ......u just need to copy them on a CD/DVD and it will play......not even that.... mixed files (mp3/wma/divx/xvid/mpeg2/mpeg1/dat/jpeg) packed in one dvd-rw separated via folders works flawlessly. Divx 6.0 though officially not supported too played nicely with no problem what so ever. The video quality in all the files I played was class apart. One thing which I presume is new I don’t know if I am wrong……..is the FF/RW capability for a Divx encoded movie....that I guess was not possible in the earlier models
All Mp3/WMA bitrares were played 64 to 320 Kpbs with 44 as well 48 KHz frequency.
The audio is loud n clear....no manual equalizers present....5 presets available which would better be kept off.
Playback mode includes....
Single
Shuffle
Repeat one
Repeat folder..........new thing
Folder...............will play just that folder
AB repeat
Mp3 info includes...track time,,,,,, total tack length,,,,, bit rate i.e. 128Kpbs. Its does not tell the frequency....44khz or 48khz......lastly the no of track being played along with the total no of tracks present
Jpeg slide show was a bit of pain, high resolution images takes too long to be displayed.
1600X1200 24 bit true color pic took 50 sec just give you a small preview at the corner and it took more than one minute to open in full screen mode....its so slow that sometime you get an impression that the player has hung n probably needs to be reset. Rest the jpeg output on a TV screen is absolutely clear with 200% zooming and panning which BTY is also available in the video mode.
Neat thing is that you can browse out of the mp3 folder and go the jpeg folder to view the Jpeg snap while the mp3 is still being played.......cool but the drawback is........slide show does not work so you have to manually view the snaps u want......the track info is always there at the top.
Missing thing in the player is s-video and optical out......the loss depends upon ones personal preference.......

Value for money. Plays practically every disc that I throw in. Lives upto its claim of You give it, We play it!!
The 12bit/108mhz video DAC gives me a wonderful output. Am using its Progressive Scan through the Component output to view dvds on my projector, and the results seem to be outstanding..very natural colours and a real sharp image. Thumbs up for video quality too!
Sound is also not bad..am not using its inbuilt decoder. The Yamaha Av Receiver I have is doing my audio decoding, resultant sound is pretty decent. One major drawback is that it doesnt have an optical out :-(
It has a lot of fancy features like CD upsampling which I yet have to make sense, as my receiver shows me 44.1 khz sound instead of the 4X upsampling.
Remote definitely needs a lot of getting used to...
OVerall its a gem for the price I paid. I am in love with it.

Very nice unit. Very nice quality for $$
It is able to play every CD and DVD that i have.
It is able to read some CD and DVD that in other equipment generates errors of reading; optical group is very very strong!!.
Some problems....
like many others philips equipments MTBF is very poor. The first i take works only for one hour. The second one is still working.
When you use the zoom features to see better on normal TV an annoing OSD message remains always on the screen!! The Philips knows this but don't have a solution....ridicoluos!!!

this is a very nice player or I say a media center because it can play most of the formats i feed into to it..dvd-mp3 works.. dvd-wma works.. dvd-jpg works.. dvd-divx/xvid works.. and last but not the least mixed files(mp3/wma/divx/mpeg2/mpeg1/xvid) packed in one dvd+rw separated via folders works like a charm.. no need authoring a dvd for an mpeg2 file. i dont need to encode divx/xvid files to mpeg2 dvd and author it cause it plays the vidoes very well.. divx with ac3 audio with subtitles works flawlessly.. i also tried a demo divx 6.0 clip with multiple audio and multiple subtitles it reads the .divx file and can select audo and subtitles on the fly. im just glad i got this player. the only thing missing in this player i the S-video connector and the optical out.
the salesperson never pointed out that it lacks the s-video connectors and optical out.. but i dont mind..
anyway playing divx on my living room and playing wma/mp3 files in a dvdr is just great. the navigation is a major update from previous philips dvd player.
i owned a Philips dvd762k player since last 2 years and what i noticed was dvp642 and my old dvd762k still have the same old menu. but the dvdp642 only got a few upgrades like the background and added menu options.
with the dvp5500s its totally new.. more convenient and more remote control friendly navigation.
i will definitely recommend this player to every one i know... |
