| I Bought this player, because of the fine rating on this site. And it does play everything you feed it. However, it's not always whitout a fight, it tends to be a little noisy, when playing back some discs that are difficult to read. Especially I have had some trouble getting it to load some philips DVD+RWs. Besides that it delivers, in my opinion, a good quality picture. |

After reading all the positive comments for this player on VideoHelp.com I decided to go ahead
and buy the Philips as my previous Yukai was already giving some small problems.
I have been using it for well over 2 months now and it has played back everything that I have loaded
into it. I discovered it even plays back images/videos on some multimedia CD Roms.
Also some long movies which have been shrunk to the maximun to fit on a DVD-R disc playback
perfectly sharp. Picture quality is very high.
Sound quality is also very good as you can adjust its built in E.Q. and you can also have 3D sound
or Virtual Surround from 2 speakers.
One of the things that I like is the ability to playback DVD-R/RW discs with MP3 tracks recorded
on them. That means that 1200 songs or 70 hours of playing time turn this player into a jukebox.
Other players I have tried cannot do this.
A couple of things which I dont like are that you can't eject a disc by holding the stop button on the
remote control for 2 seconds as it says in the instruction manual. Also MP3 discs don't autoplay
after you load them in. You have to navigate the on screen menu for playback. But here is a small
tip for that.
1. load MP3 disc in player.
2. press DISC/MENU button on remote control.
3. press PLAY.
Your MP3 disc should playback from begining to end.
I paid 79 Eur. for it and I would recomend this player to anyone that wants good quality at a reasonable price

I got this dvd player to replace my older Lenco and Cyberhome players (both of which had skipping problems).
I must say I am very, very pleased with this player. I had seen the DVP 530 in action, and this one is basically the same thing, only the european version with a scart connector on the back.
Picture of both PAL and NTSC is crisp and clear on my PAL tv, but only if the disc is run in NTSC or multi-system mode, when the NTSC is converted to PAL, the picture isn't as sharp. Still works though. It plays back photo-discs as well (including zoom and flip/rotation options). I haven't tried (s)vcd's yet, but I don't really care about thoseanyway.
I paid 83 euros for the player, which isn't much more than what I paid for the Cyberhome, and is less than what I paid for the Lenco 2 years ago.
All in all, awesome player, great price, very happy.

Just bought this player yesterday.
I must say it meets all my expectations.
I also have a Pioneer DV-533 region 1, that did have some problems with playback of a few dvd-r/+r.
To be precise I had 3 movies it didnt play.....so I bought this Philips and tried out my 3 "problem" movies....all played perfect....so i just retired my pioneer and use this instead.
Furthermore its looking great compared to my pioneer....silver/black....looks nice and its small too...the size of it is just about the same size of a piece of paper (A4) and only about 3-4 cm high.
All-in-All a big 10-rating on this player.
I will try it out some more and make another rating after some months use.

Got this after reading reviews on here. I have put every type of media into it and it plays them all flawlessly. A top notch player for only £44.99. I wanted a player that could handle ntsc to pal with out the jitter you get on the tv screen. It handles this conversion well.

This player was brilliant but dont overuse it. It played everything and i mean everything i threw at it. Now it fails on title trasistions and loading the menu up after end credits (nice loud clunking noise). I am a heavy user but 7 months worth is god awful. Its my 2nd philips dvd player thats died from overuse in a short period of time so i think i'll be giving them a miss when i get my money back from this one.

Got 1 for a mate of mine and was so impressed I purchased 1 for myself as it is more friendly to the eye in compared to the Bush 2035xi(which I might add has also played everything I have thrown at it). No media probs at the min but time will tell!!!

Very good player, but only 2 problems :
1) I can't eject the disc when I am holding the stop button on the remote for more than 2 sec .
2) Disk resume does not work if i turn off the player !! In my old Toshiba SD-220E and the Philips DVD612 it worked perfectly !!! |

This player doesn't look like much, but the price/quality ratio is superb. Philips seems to have put a very good chipset in a no-frills box for a bargain price. The video and audio quality is comparable with players two or three times as expensive, while this machine is only marginally more expensive than all those crappy players from a make you've never heard of. Picture quality is very good, audio is good. On screen menus are straightforward and have some nice options; download the manual at philips.com to see for yourself.
If you're looking for a state of the art hometheater monster you should give this one a pass I guess, but if you just want a really good dvd player this one is for you. It seems to me that Philips is almost stupid for undercutting their more expensive models with a bargain-player as good as this one. And the region-free hack (see above) works fine. |

This is superb for the price.
I just got it for ½price i a Danish shop (235$ -> 117$).
Picture and sound is super for the price.
It is eating everything I feed it.
My only problem so far is I can't make it eject the disc when I am holding the STOP-button on the remote for more than 2 sek. (as mentioned in the danish manual). |

Very impressed with the cost and picture quality, I’ve had a few cheaper players like the Yamada and Cyberhome but this Philips player knocks spots off them. The picture quality is 100% better it plays mpeg 1 and 2 files as most other players do. It plays back in any format so if your TV is PAL only then the player will output in the PAL format, some players only playback the format of the disc for example a region1 movie mite play back in black and white if your TV only supports PAL format.
It’s a thin player that looks good and is easy to use and great picture quality for the money, and if you want a multi-region player then the hack on this site works just fine.

Used to have a samsung dvd-m205.
I wanted to get a newer type, and had a really hard time finding one that is better than my 3 years old one!
Thanks to good comments on videohelp, I choose the Philips DVP520. 95 euro at mediamarkt. I tried my vcd's and svcd's having all different kinds of video frame rates and audio - they played well. Other players did not like these disks...
Played some DVD+R with different types of downloaded movies - all played well.
One disk was damaged. It played nice. Player reached the bump and seemed to pause a little bit to resume one or two seconds later in the movie. All without blocks and nastyness... Very Impressive!
Old player used to jump to the next chapter whenever it could not recover an error - that way you loose a few minutes here and there... This one plays much better!
Seems not to play divx wich does not bother me at all...
I can only see first 14 or so characters of mp3 files, however, it shows them nicely in a folder structure.

I put negative things here becasue they are more important than this superb bla bla.
So:
- no any data cable supplied
- no digital optical output
- without remote control you are lost becasue there are only open/close, on/off, stop and play buttons on the front panel
- no DTS out

First off I want to thank Videohelp for allowing me to make an informed choice on picking a new DVD player.
Secondly...This player is ABSOLUTELY SUPERB. I had the older Philips model, which to be honest, didnt impress me that much. it was picky with which DVD(R) media it played, and VCD's were often tricky too, depending on the software used to burn etc. It was also slow, even with the newest firmware and crashed alot.
Well after upgrading my DVD Writer, I decided to upgrade my player also. After hearing great reviews about this player I deciced to go ahead and buy it. It was the best choice i have made in a long time!
About the player...This plays ANY DVD(R) you throw at it. DVD-R, DVD+R, they just play, no problems! (S)VCD's are fine, no probs, as are MP3's. Also, this is not a picky player, it will play the cheap white label DVD recordable Discs (the bundle packs, even those dodgey yellow and pink ones!)
If you are looking for a player that will play a recorded DVD wihtout hesitation, this is it.
The remote is fine, ergonomic and compact. The actual player itself is slimline and compact (not the most appealing to look at, but HEY does it matter, erm NO!)
The functions are great also, some of the best i have seen. It has its own EQ settings, Smart Pciture Settings, and lots of oter nifty features.
I could go on for a while praising this little machine. I wanted to write this to hopefully help persuade someone looking to get a new player that this is a great choice and you will not be dissapointed, mark my words.
and the price, well its affordable for everyone.

| This is a great little player and a bargain £69.99 Woolworths(wish Id gone to Sainsburys).I had been using a philips 612 which was a bit temperemental with vcd on r/w discs and cd's.This machine is far more stable and the picture/sound quality is a vast improvement.........especially if you have it hooked up to your proper hi-fi system.My verdict get one,the only thing i dont particularly like is it's colour,mostly silver,the rest of my equipment is black |

| Absolutely superb player, Ive got many badly authored disks here from my erarly dabbling days that will not play in 95% of machines. They all play on this player and they are not slow startign either. Also got some badly damaged disks and they all play without a hitch. It also has equlaiser settings and sharpness settings that work, very neat player slim and well built. Got it here in the UK from Sainsburys for £50. Definately comes highly recomended... GET ONE.. Plays early Princo dye disks also, even those terrible WHITE LABEL yellow top...!! |
