Once yo've updated the firmware with one of the newest homemade firmwares made by one of the great people that spend their time for the common wealth (as GNU), this player ROCKS!
Some firmwares features:
Subs sizes/fonts/colors change on the fly.
Autoload subs, select load subs only with the same name as the .avi or all subs (you can change subs with the Subtitles button on the RC (GREAT FEATURE)

Melhor DVD player que eu já vi, nunca rejeitou nem esquenta uma mídia, carrega a maioria dos arquivos rapidamente, suporta arquivos .divx (mas não tem certificação DivX Ultra, ou seja, sem menus). E como é baseado no MediaTek, tem vários firmwares modificados na internet que adicionam ainda mais funções. Recomendado.
Best DVD player I've ever seen, always loads midia, loads media files very fast, supports .divx files (however don't have DivX Ultra, no menus). Based on MediaTek chipset's, mod firmwares add more funtions. Recommended.

Worked well on everything that I threw at it. The small irritation faced so far is the packed bitstream problem for Xvid files that other users have reported.
Like everyone else, I hope there will be some firmware upgrade that will resolve this. Mpegmodifier solves the problem but it does get on my nerve when I forgot to unpack the file and have to reburn my DVD again. |

It's a very good dvd-player.
- Seems that the dvd-player doesn't play DTS soundtracks without an external decoder (If anyone knows I'm wrong, please mail me and tell me how to play DTS tracks)
- I have to get used to its dvd-slot, the dvd-player doesn't have a dvd-tray.
- I payed €108(euro's), thats about 125/130 US dollars.
- For anything else, mail me :)

Hi all,
YES this player rocks!, i want to fix my first report. YES it plays not fluid if the video file has a PacketStream. Remove it with MPEG4MODIFIER and that will fix the video and will play the video correctly. Supports QPEL and al that :D
About the subtitle desync with a movie splited for 2 cd´s: all we now that the subtitle file and move needs to have the same name, but if the movie is in two parts remember to take out the number in the gilename (i.g. bob-cd1.avi bob-cd1.srt -> change it to bob-a.avi bob-b.srt) that will fix the desync in the subtitle :D

| I cannot do all the tests but there is one test who takes my attention. Using the Divx 5.2 codec give a result of stagnation in imageflow about 0.1 second a lot of time during playing. I do not have this problem with the Divx 5.1.1 codec. |

This palyer is great. (& because i aint tested all the features, and can cause cutting of widescreen dvd on normal tv without option to force 4:3 resolution to fix problem)
Has option in it for tv type, which in my opinion means it will paly any dvd (pal and ntsc a) and will force the output to the setting you specify (meaning NTSC on Pal TV). have tried it and works great (region 1 dvd on region 2 unlocked player. Region 1 dvd tested in regionless PAL player with black and white output (wrong frame rate etc) |

This player is unable to play XVID encodded with Packed Bitstream. As most XVID encoder's default setting is with packed bitstream is turned on, playback is jerky.
In order to overcome this, use Mpeg4 modifier to remove the packed bitstream. This means you will have to re-burn your CD/DVD.
I hope philips will release a fix for this |

Video playback is good and it played everything in its way so far(too early to say in just a day).
Audio playback performance was indeed 'DISAPPOINTING'
It fails to even match the DVP532k, an olderplayer from Philips itself! The depth is simply not there. A missing dts and lesser dynamic range (85db) and Distortion & Noise are the only technicals noted between the players mentioned. These combined with fewer equalising options certainly make it a tad unforgiving for the keen ear.
Personally I feel that Philips has gone all out to deliver video playability by compromising on Audio quality. However there is hope in the upcoming DVP5500s which looks a more complete package. Let's hope its worth the wait. |

Happily plays XviD and DivX with AC-3 and Subs from DVD-R.
Manual says it plays DivX with Qpel and GMC but I have not tested.
An annoying bug is that 16:9 DivX/XviD is sent to TV anamorphically, but the SCART switching is not used, so you have to manually set the wide mode on your TV (DVDs switch the wide mode OK). Hopefully this bug can be fixed in a firmware update.
I tested a 4:3 DivX file and that was sent to the TV anamorpically also, meaning that it cannot be made to fill the screen on a 16:9 TV, as it has black bars added to left and right of image.... Only tested one 4:3 disc.

Has not crashed yet, unlike the KISS 1000 player I took back after 2 days of crashes, and having to unplug to reboot it. |

This player rocks! you can read all divx and xvid videos, BUT you have to check the video file for formats like QPEL, better to think if they use the PRO funcionts of DIVX compression. It´s really simple you have to use a program called MPEG4MODIFIER, but first use the avickeck program to check this. Find in google how to use this programs it´s really simple, if you don´t do this the movies will look like slow or not fluid as we like to see. But remember this is only with some avi files please check first!! and always a DVD-RW to check if it´s working right.
What i don´t like is movies in avi format for 2 CD´s are not very sync with subs for the second CD i don´t know why is this happenning.
It´s interesting that you can read the contecnt of the dvd with all your video files, you can mix videos, picture and MP3 is a nice function. It´can´t read long file names :( really bad but we hope a new firmware can fix that!
I think this dvd player is based on a ESS chip donñt know really well i tried to open tha player but didn´t work :( (don´t wanna break it :) )
The DVD tray it´s like a car audio, you only have to push the cd or DVD to load, with this ypu can put your player in any position REALLY COOL
Includes a mic input for KARAOKE
Only have a dolby digital output, not DTS :( but for your room it´s not bad!
NO optic outputs :(
the hack region free it´s in the proper section here, and IT WORKS!
i don´t have tried but i hink this dvd player can read pal DVD and use in a ntsc TV, next month i´ll tri it and put a new report!
