Comments:
This is quite possibly the best DVD player EVER! It literally plays everything I put in it. I bought the 3982 nearly 2 years ago at Walmart for $44 dollars, and originally had it connected to a 30" SDTV. It wasn't until six months later that I bought my Vizio VW42L (42" Full HDTV) and was blown away by the upconverting capabilities of the unit. This player runs DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+DL/VCD/SVCD/Divx/Xvid/MPEG and plays both PAL and NTSC formats. It also has no problem with different brands of media from cheap Staples/OfficeMAX CD-R/DVD-R to Verbatim DVD+DL and everything in between.(The only reason I didn't list DVD-RW or DVD-DL is because I've never bought/burned any of those discs, so I haven't tested them.) It's gotten so whenever a relative or friend complains about not being able to play a disc I've loaned them I insist that they replace their balky player with this one. I've even bought them as gifts! But for me one of the biggest bonuses of this unit is its ability to display movies in their native resolution without any help from me. When played in my 5-disc Panasonic PT760 "full screen" (4:3) movies stretch to fill the screen, meaning I have to tweak the picture using the TV remote. Not so with the Philips. Any 4:3 ratio movies display properly with the black bars filling the sides of the screen. My only complaint would be its inability to display full-length titles when browsing the main TOC on a JPG or MP3 disc. It will only display the first 14 characters, so if you have a disc of JPGs it can be hard to navigate it you're searching for a specific file, but all in all a very nice machine, for a very nice price!

Comments:
I have a very diverse collection of formats for DVD's I own. I am not a Dixv expert but it appears to play all other formats also fine, with the exception of:

mp4 - Though it appeared that the unit would support this format, I reports the error message that it cannot read this format... it plays the audio but not the video.

The only other comments other then a great player, for the diversity and price is the relative slow boot up time for unit. But, I know that going in.

I bought this player specifically for DivX playback. Let me say I'm floored! Very good playback - better than my brand-new Dell XPS at DivX playback (same display and speakers, HDMI input).

Comments:
HDMI died after 6.5 months.

I went online and Google'd this model, and I saw that those who own the units for more than a few days, that this comes up quite a bit.

Most of the reviews are by people who own the units for a few days.

The unit's response to the remote control is very slow.

I would not buy this unit again had I known of this problem.

This player works very well. I have a number of DVD-R media with .avi files burned straight from my computer (without other conversion) and it plays them ALL. This is one of the very few players that plays them.

Philips Progressive Scan DVD Player w/ 1080p Upconversion, DVP3982/37

Got a Walmart gift card and bought this online at Walmart.com for $49. They do not carry this particular model in store. I've been able to play both CD-R and CD-RW discs with xVid and DivX movies on them no problem. I'm using Taiyo Yuden CD-R discs and TDK CD-RW discs. Regular DVDs work great as well. Audio and Video looks good. Have not tried any other media, but feel confident it can handle anything I throw at it.
