So far this player is great. I was about to return it when I first bought it because of the Jerky playback, but then I realized this was a Bitstream problem that I was able to fix with a non phillips firmware update, from then on the player has been great!
I have one divx that seems to play great on the computer but the sound seems messed up on the player will see if I can fix it tonight but other than that update your firmware then the unit is great.

This is my first dvd review and for this little gem of a player, I just had to write one. I have had this player for I guess over a year now and I fricking love it. It plays everything I have thrown at it. It even plays PAL dvds which there is nothing about this on the box or the manual. That feature alone and its ability to play Divx/Xvid files are why I love it so much. I download a lot of PAL bootleg concert dvds and love how it plays them perfectly. I dont get why people are saying it doesnt play Divx files right as mine play flawlessly. I never upgraded the firmware either.
Another nice feature is seeing that it plays mp3's from dvd. My only complaint with this dvd player is that it shows only a few characters of the file names. When mp3's are playing though, it shows a cool little equalizer graphic and shows the ID3 tag info.
I definitely would get another Philips player if they ever fix the character limit feature. However, since I have the new TMPENC DVD Author with Divx, I plan on authoring my own DIVX dvd's to use with this player and get all the benefits of a regular dvd. |

This DVD player is advertised as multi regional one.
I was given a code in the store(Best Buy). But no way to introduce this code at setup.

| Comments: |
The model I got is the DVP3040-37 (North America).
DivX playback is terrible, chooppy and jerky. As an undocumented feature this would be fine but Philips are clearly marketing this as a DivX player, in large text all over the box. Shame on you Philips, this is not acceptible, I expect high quality in the major selling features and hence the low rating.
I went to the Philips website hoping for a solution to the DivX playback issue, after all this player was manufactured 9 month ago so I would expect it to be fixed by now. I got the latest firmware but it was a pain to install since the instructions are not clear. When I fianlly got it installed there was no improvement.
The good news for anyone stuck with machine is that there is a hacked version of the firmware available that fixes the DivX playback along with a couple of other issues see http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=3474 It's just a pity that Philips have not managed to fix it themselves in an official release.
If you're after an MP4 player save your money and buy something that handles it properly. I expect we'll see these pop up in the refurb outlets soon as the returns start fo filter through. |

Pros: Very small and compact; plays divx on cd-r or dvd-r; payed under 50 bucks for player.
Cons: No optical sound; have to eject with remote; shuts off when left in pause for a long period of time.

| Bought this to replace a 642 that went out on me. It's a little bit of a mixed bag. It seems to support more media types and newer codecs which is a plus. The feel of the unit is somewhat cheap and the disk drawer is balky trying to get it to open and close and the quality of the mechanism and drawer seem to be kind of flimsy. A much more basic, value priced model. It's been ok so far, we'll see how well it holds up. |

| Comments: |
Very cheap player but the 3040/37 (the version available apparently in the US) has a terrible problem with jerky playback of DIVX. The playback is not just jerky in some parts but the entire DIVX video looks like it's running at 15 fps instead of 29. Unusable in this respect so don't buy it for DIVX playback.
I did read that this has something to do with the video having a packed bitstream and there is a utility out there to unpack it. But why bother? What a pain that is.
I returned it and purchased the Philips 5960 which does not have the problem. I played the same video files on that one and they were fine.

Got this player on sale for $38 at Best Buy. My older Philips player wouldn't play my backup DL movies.
I used a Verbatim DVD+R DL on the DVP3040 and it played beautifully without a hitch. It also played my single layer DVD+R's
I haven't been able to try any CD's or Divix yet, but for $40 this is an excellent buy. |

I bought a Philips 642 for $45 at Best Buy 3 weeks ago for my son. It played everything. I picked up the newer 3040 at Best Buy for $39. I tested many formats. It played them all including Verbatim DVD+R DL and old Divx movies. It even played MP3 files on a DVD+R disk.
While the remote is basic, it does everything you need including a good zoom mode and fast forward. It is missing an eject button. The front of the player has only an on off button, open-close, play-pause and stop.
The warranty is only 90 days. Then for the next year if it dies, you pay an exchange fee. They won't say what that fee is, but the player only cost $39. |

It don't play my burnt dvd movies so well. After a while it starts to search what to play, and skipping parts of the movie. Probably it's to sensitive or something.
This player's gooing back to the store.
The same movies have no problems beeing played on my friends pioneer. |

| Well I bought this player a few days ago replacing my Coby 207 that just died (RIP), and it`s has been a good adquisition, really fast loading, no troubles with DVD-R Verbatim, Maxell or Ridata (G05), as well as some DVD+R, good sound quality with my Logitech home theater, also it has some sound, and video options so you can adjust yours just the way you want. |
