About the dead C316 capacitor replacement:
It's more important to get a higher temperature rating than a higher voltage rating. The original was 1000uF / 10v / 105°C
16v or 25v is probably fine but do not go lower on the temp rating.

| I bought this player about 2years ago at local compusa. I had zero issues until last week, I got the blinking redlight/no loading. I read about the replacing the capciator and went to radioshack. Bought capciator # 272-1032 Player works again. Replacement is very easy took 30mins. Hope this helps anyone |

My wife and I have been very happy with these DVD players (we bought two based off of the suggestions here). There have been two issues:
- The timer in the corner of the screen is a bit annoying to get rid of nearly every time we use the DVD players. Not huge, I know, but annoying.
- This DVD player would not play a recent Convention DVD that my wife purchased. I am not sure whether this DVD was made by a private party or whether they contracted an external service to produce these, but when I put it in our old DVD player it played.
We retired this DVD player as it was not able to play burned DVD discs, so I guess I'll keep it around for just this disc . . . and any others we may run into. |

| This unit playes everything you throw at it. It will play DIVX, XVID, MP3 etc. It has a very nice picture coming through either the component or s-video cables, some DIVX files almost look like HD. They could have spent more time designing the remote a little better but it is ok. Sometimes certain DIVX of XVID's play in a very strange purple looking color until you enter the system setup and exit, then they are fine. A very nice DVD player especially for the price. |

It should be good, but it’s not exactly as good as some people are saying. While it plays many types of disks – it’s very picky to their quality. It stutters a lot on disks that I play just fine on my Sony. And that is the main reason why it went back to Circuit City.
The main point – it has very weak error correction mechanism, unlike Sony’s.

This player has played all DVD-R and DVD-RW media I have thrown at it. It does a reasonably good job on PAL->NTSC conversion. The region hack worked great. It plays VCD, SVCD, and MPEG-ISOs. It plays AVI/XViD. After owning it a little over a year, it had the blown capacitor problem, which was fixed as other people described.
Problems: it won't play, or even show, files that are very large -- not sure where the exact cutoff is, but somewhere over 1GB. It won't play or even show filenames that are very long. It truncates filenames after just a small number of characters. Rewind doesn't always work right with MPEG files.
It's a great player, but it could be better. I'm looking to replace it with a player that fixes some of the above, and includes a changer. |

I bought this player because I had a bunch of anime fansubs encoded with DivX that I wanted to watch on a TV set. It was the cheapest DivX SAP I could find at the time. Lookswise, it's very sleek. I was amazed by how thin it was when I first got it. Performance-wise, it's pretty good for playing older files (DivX 3.11,4,5). There are even files that don't play properly on my PC that this player can handle. My only gripe would be it doesn't play audio encoded in DivX ;) (which is basically hacked WMA) but that's easily remedied. Media compatibility is also good. So far, I haven't had a media that it won't read.
However, newer files encoded with advanced features like QPEL, GMC and custom matrices either won't display well or won't play at all.
Conclusion: It's a pretty good player but its age is showing. |

| This is a good player, I am very happy that it reads DivX and XviD as well as my home vids on DVD+/-R. I have some DivX files burned to TDK DVD+R and they play just fine, maybe Rob just has the wrong media. Those files look better played through the computer with my TV out function, but the convenience of having them on disc makes the quality acceptable. The overall picture quality is not as good as my Mintek 1600 was though, had to replace it as one of the sound channels started cutting out. |

| Power went out on the player. The red power light just blinked with no response. I followed the directions for replacing capacitor c316. I could not find a match at Radio Shack , so I purchased part # 272-1019, a 1000u 35volt capacitor. It is much larger than the original, but with a little enginuity it will fit, and it works fine. I installed it in my player after the warranty was gone, and it works fine.Very easy soldering.I will repost if it stops working anytime soon. Mcflea |

Gosh you guys are harsh.
SO it isn't perfect, what piece of hardware/software is?
I've had the same problems, but also the same great results.
I recently found out about the custom color fix. And as far as the unit not responding to the remote or the buttons on the player, give it a chance.
I've found when it gets stuck to keep hitting the off or stop button until something happens. Then it reboots.
Simple, no?
With all its greatness and faults I'll probably not buy any other brand again. In fact, I'm probably gonna buy the home theater in a box version of this (with the USB port to hook up my hard drive) and be even happier.

Bought one of the latest batch from Circuit City. It plays DIVX, but the on-screen timer display will not turn off. Another user is reporting this on this site's forums.
You might want to see what happens before you buy one of these.
Also, preview function does not work on mine.

| I purchased this for $30 after $20 rebate over internet from Circuit City. The unit played fine DVD -r movie disks. It was not quite as good as my Cyberhome 300 unit. It has a mediocre menu for playing DVD MP3 disks. It lacks a random capability. The region hack on this site worked fine. I did not check its DivX capability and have no need for that feature. For me, the unit is an average unit that lacks basic features as random capability. Unless you need the DivX capability, you can probably do better elsewhere. I'm taking this unit back for a refund. |

has played basically everything i have put into it. fantastic player for its price.
just burned my first few DVD+R DL and this player unfortunately failed that test. it would play about the first 3rd fine, then stutter/pause during the middle 3rd, and played the final 3rd fine. these disc were verbatim 2.4x DL discs. these DVDs did play fine in the xbox, no stuttering.
other than that one problem, i highly recommend this player. would like a few more features, but for about $60 that plays basically everything flawlessly, who can argue. also if you change the CC code on Xvid discs, most will play, some will not. |

The first player I purchased died after 2 months, it simply went bonkers and would not play anything. The replacement I was sent by Philips is working OK but it still exhibits some of the same issues that I had with the first player. It does play Divx and Xvid avi's reasonably well, but if an AVI has Dolby 5.1 audio the player loses sync between audio and video, making it unwatchable. I've tried many different AVIs that have 5.1 AC3 audio with the same results (they play on my computer without problem, checked with VirtualDub and no issues), audio drops out frequently and never syncs with video. With other audio formats (like MP3 or even 2 channel AC3) there is no problem, plays very well.
It is a shame I can't use 5.1 audio when it is present, having to convert it to a non-surround sound format, redo the avi, etc. A time consuming task.

IT SHOWS YOU EXACTLY WHAT IS ON THE DISC INCLUDING JUST DATA FOLDERS AND LET'S YOU PLAY WHAT IT CAN PLAY WHICH IS ALMOST EVERYTHING EXCEPT THAT QUARTER PIXEL RUBBISH WHICH I DON'T HAVE AND DON'T NEED AND I DON'T THINK MOST PEOPLE ARE EVEN GOING TO KNOW EXISTS!
THEIR IS NO NOTICABLE NOISE AND TO BE QUITE HONEST, JUST ABOUT EVERY DVD PLAYER BOTH STANDALONE AND INTERNAL ON A PC MAKES NOISE?! THIS PLAYER IS NOT NOISY UNLESS YOU PUT YOUR EAT RIGHT NEXT TO THE PLAYER WHILE IT IS SEARCHING A DISC.

| Player worked well played everything I put in it except xvid with Qpel or Gmac files. That reason alone it was going back. Main complaint with this thing is its NOISEY. Holy crap is it noisey. I have to crank of my tv just to drown out the sound from this thing searching and spinning. Doesn't matter if it was a DVD or Divx files. It it was quiter and had QPEL support it owuld have been a keeper. Has a good image and no issues with burnt dvd or divx/xvid files. |

| Was good at first to have a dvd player able to play DivX / XviD .avi files but has become more of a pain than a godsend. Long White lines appear during some .avi disc playback. Keep haing to reset it to clear them and they ALWAYS come back. I also just tried to play a DVDR+DL that had worked on my other Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung dvd players, and it failed miserably. It reads no disc. The overall quality of the player is OK only because of the DivX / XviD capability, but since there are a lot more players coming out with next-gen media playback (i.e. Blu-Ray, DVD-HD), I'd hold out until the prices go down for the High Def players. There isn't much mystery to this one, as it is only $20-$50 nowadays. |

Plays my DivX perfect. Plays Xvid pretty good except for some that it doesn't support (i believe qpel), but for that you can just hit "system menu" twice and it plays =)
I have backed up several of my DVD's to DVD-R DL and it works flawlessly, mirror image. It's probably because I didn't really edit anything, I just ripped as an iso and burned it, no errors, no coasters. Used Verbatim 2x-4x DVD-R DL. |

This is the most compatible Divx player I've ever used. Recently was out of town and in need of a player to watch some movies on the tv set instead of the laptop.
Bought what was available out there which was a magnavox divx certified player. that thing played about 1/5 of my movies. There is also a fix for those people with the philips dvp642 and get some movies appearing with color issues. You simply press the system button twices and it will make the movie watchable. Never had one of mine or any that i recommended to my friends and family ever go bad. My first one has got to be 2 or 3 years old. My second is a year and a half a dozen of my friends have had their's for at least a year.
Just wish philip's would keep the firmware posted instead playing games putting it on and off. Other then that. I use component out into my Plasma HDTV and there is nothing to complain about. |

I bought this DVD player(one and half year ago) 'cause it's DiVx features. I had the «region free» code from the man who sold me the first player (yup! I'd bought a second one last year!) and I don't have anything to complain about this machine.
It play most of everything I put in the tray, without problems. Some DiVx won't play because they got WMA audio tracks so, i just convert them with FFMpeg and let's go! :-)
A friend gave me a DiVx wih a non-standard PC's codec one day... even FFMpeg wasn't able to reconvert it in a readable format so...
For the FFWD and FRWD, they are located on each side of the «OK» button (i.e. the arrows). |
