The USB 2.0 is great! Put your files on a flash drive and play. Love the zoom in/out feature. Plays WMV. Plays every file format I have except MKV. I love this player!

Audio became unusable after 6 months. Played it all including CVD, SVCD, dixv, xvid. USB port on front nice. HDMI connection a bit flakey. Sometimes the screen would go orange with HDMI, but played ok via rca. Audio finally dropped really low through all outputs and buzzed.

the hack works with my player 5990/12, and with new firmware version 12.08.50.34 too.

long file name would be nice to have. i don't understand why more players don't have this, especially philips which is a very big name brand.

otherwise, it seems like a very good player. usb for flash drive is very good.

supposedly audio cds can be ripped as mp3 to a flash drive, but i haven't tried that yet.

I just noticed a lot of my older .AVI files that play on my Philips DVP642 won't play with this unit even with the latest firmware. They are encoded with S-Mpeg 4 version 2 (MP42). It's a bummer this newer player doesn't support what the older one does, but I have to say I love everything else about this player.

This was a pretty good buy. I sold my (absolutely crappy) Samsung DVD R-120 recorder for a few bucks - nice to down pay a little for great DVP5990/37. Just a few random notes:
1. Plays back pretty much every conceivable format from my USB schtick. Haven't tried mkv yet.
2. Plays back backed up DVDs with DivX files. However, when it seeks for files, gives a strange swooshing sound but once it finds the file, plays just like it is supposed to.
3. When you try to ff at 8x from USB schtick, the picture may freeze for 3-5 seconds. I only ff at either 4x or 16x.
4. Subtitles work superb, especially if they are in .srt format.
5. Region-free code works (as prescribed by witch doctors) and plays back Region 2 DVDs without a hitch.
6. Have tried only 4Gb USB but want to up it to 16Gb - worth the investment.

Finally managed to grab one of these from Bust Buy Canada for $59.99CDN, and so far I'm pretty damn happy with it.

I've no idea how well the upscaling works as I have a 27" Toshiba CRT. It's played burned Xvid/divX discs with no problem, and man, is that USB port handy. No more burning everything just to watch it on the telly; dump the rotten flics, I say!

I've a rather limited sourround system with no digital input, so I was rather happy to find the Virtual Surround Sound capabilities. Works well enough in my small (12x12) telly room.

Overall I'd say that it's worth the bucks I spent on it. This being said after only 3 weeks of use. I went one bit further and paid the $9.99CDN for the extended 2yr warranty, as I've heard some nasty things about Philips disc drives and trays.

playback (firmwave v31):
supports everything except Xvid >720 width (maybe it's just me),anything encoded with GMC (global motion compensation-need to reencode a video), unusual or unassigned (tag 0055) audio, .MOV
-----------------
problem: USB flash stick or external USB drive not recognized
solution: limit the number of files/folders below the limit outlined in the manual, also DVP5990 supports only FAT32 formatted drives, not NTFS. Vast majority of commercial USB drives come preformatted as NTFS. The catch is that WinXP Disc management utility cannot format drives into FAT32. Solution is here: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm
Praise the guy! works as a charm. FAT32 is subject to some limitations in indexing etc, but all the same to your PC..

On my backup 160GB drive I've created 2 partitions: 4GB FAT32 for movie swapping/watching, 140GB NTFS for a backup with a gazillion files/folders. Works well w/my DVP59990.
- removed NTFS partition using Disc management in XP
- created a blank 4GB partition and assigned drive letter (F) using Disc management in XP (as outlined in the link above)
- formatted it for FAT32 using the tool in the link, formatted the rest for NTFS using Disc Management

I bought it on boxing day at CND$49.99, I tried using a few different types
of DVD disks, DVD Music, USB port with a flash memory, every thing is
working well.

But the unit gave me one problem: it do not export digital audio signal to my home theater, when using HDMI cable linking to my TV. To get the signal from the digital audio output, I must disable the audio signal inside the HDMI cable linking.

Now I returned the unit back to the Best Buy.

Hi Folks. I've recently been looking for the DVD player, here, in Atlantic Canada, and so far I am SOL. One site that had these units for sale to Canada came in at twice the price (2 X $60 CDN) after tarrifs, taxes and S/H.

Does anyone know of where I might grab one of these boxes in Canada?

Thanks for taking the time to read this ramble.

Bought this to replace my DVP-642. Plays movies from my sata drive docking station perfect thru the usb port. I also tried 2 brands of dual layer media. The unit played both Memorex and Verbatim brands. The Verbatim took a little longer to load on the 5990 but did play it. The 642 plays the Verbatim perfect but will not play the Memorex.

Goal: To use a printed list of movies and TV shows to select from hundreds of files on a USB hard drive using the number pad on the DVD remote control.

I recently purchased the Philips DVP-5990 and connected a wiped clean Western Digital 500GB USB 2.0 My Book (WDH1U500N) through the USB port on the front of the DVD player. The operating system on my computer is Win XP.

The (FAT-32) Hard Drives root directory was loaded up with 640 movies and TV shows, mostly XVID but some DIVX and MPG as well. The DVD player manual states that its file system can see 648 files. The Hard Drive contains about 410 GB of data.

A file renaming program called Flash Renamer was utilized to add numbers to the beginning of the file names so they read: 001 – Movie a, 002 – Movie b, 003 – Movie c, etc. The 3-digit number at the beginning of the file name will be entered on the DVD remote control to select the Movie. An alternative method would be to add these numbers in the word processor using bullet points. But I had a mixture of movies and television shows and numbering the files let me keep them separate on the disk without using folders.

The DVD player displayed the files in the order they were placed on the Hard Drive, not in alphabetical order. They appeared to be in no particular order - all jumbled. Also there were two folders being displayed that were not copied over. They looked like the Recycle Bin and a System Folder. These are hidden folders on your My Book Hard Drive that will be deleted later using your computer.

A program named DriveSort was used to put the files in the correct order on the Hard Drive. This program rewrites the FAT table of the Hard Drive; so make sure you have back-ups of ALL the files before running this program. After this program was closed the disk was opened in My Computer to see if the files were still there. There are other programs that do similar things but they were not tried.

Going to a command prompt and typing the following text creates a list of all the files on the Hard Drive.

dir g:\ /w > c:\list.txt

(Substitute your My Book drive letter for g: if needed)

This created a file in the root directory of the C: drive named list.txt. This file was opened and the list was checked to see if the files were in the proper order. The data in this file was copied to a word processor, cleaned up and printed. Now a hard copy of the files exists with each movie or show having a 3-digit number that corresponds to its location on the hard drive.

The two hidden files have to be deleted for the numbers to be correct; otherwise they skew the list by 2.

The hidden folders must be unhidden before the can be deleted. To reveal the folders: Go to your My Book Hard Drive on your computer and from the pull down menu select Tools → Folder Options then Select the View tab. Below in the advanced options select “Show hidden files and folders” and un-check the box next to “Hide protected operating system files”.

Now you should be able to see the two previously hidden folders in the root directory of your My Book. Windows will not let you delete them now. More work must be done.

To delete the Recycled folder: Right click on the Recycle Bin on your desktop and select Properties. Select Configure drives independently and then select the tab for you’re my Book hard drive; check the box so the files will not be moved to the recycle bin when they are deleted. Don't worry – this will not harm the environment. Select OK to close the window.

Now you should be able to delete the Recycle folder on your My Book.

To delete the System Volume Information Folder: Go to the Control Panel and then open up the System Properties. Choose the System Restore tab, select your drive from the list, and click on settings. Check the box that will allow you to turn off System Restore on this drive. Click OK to close the windows.

You should now be able to delete the System Volume Information folder on your My Book.

Plug the drive into the DVD player and navigate to the desired movie or show by pressing the 3-digit number from the printed list on the remote control. In a couple of seconds the show will start. No need to stop the playback before entering the 3-digit code for the next file. The hard drive light remains on when you power off the DVD player. It does spin down though.

I had the Philips 5960 which I thought was a great player but its USB was only 1.1 and some XviDs would become jerky during scenes with lots of motion.

This new Philips 5990 has USB 2.0 and those XviDs now play flawlessly.

Also, the 5960 displayed FAT32 (USB flashdrive / HDD) files with 8.3 filenames but the 5990 displays them properly, albeit truncated to 14 chars (hopefully a firmware hack will add long-filename support as happened with the 5960).

tested firmware 31 (no public hacks yet, just a post on a non-English board about someone starting to poke through it.)

Pros:
picture quality, upscaling, deinterlacing, frame rate adjustment are great
front panel USB is very nice
very attractive design (no blaring LEDs, smooth surface, etc.)

Cons:
No long filename display
Short file names do not relate to long filename
Short file name method not explained
Aspect ratio of PAL on NTSC display is wrong, looks like a square
Disc menu button does not work when watching VOB files
Mute button does nothing while playing VOB files

I have experimented with this dvd player for about a week and love it. A few random notes. It plays xvid and divx files with switchable subtitles. It also plays WMV files and I tested it with a mixed disc of jpeg, wmv, divx and such all play fine. With subtitles they have to be in the same folder as the original movie and labeled with the exact, EXACT file name as the original file. I find that the .srt file format works best. The player displays jpegs in thumbnails also. slide show, with zoom, and rotation. There is a button on the remote for switching between USB and dvd/cdr. I have tried DVD+R and DVD-R, vcd and cdr, all formats are recognized. During mp3 playback which is supported it will display bit rate file name artist name and album if they are properly named. If a particual audio or video codec is not supported it will tell you but play the other part of the file. I have some vids where the video will work but not the audio, but at least it tells you and tries to play it. It does play .vob files as well unfinalized. In operation pressing stop twice will get you back to the main disc menu. The USb port is definitely usb 2.0 as it shows the movies clear and no jitters or lag time. My best friend bought one and he tested it out on his digital receiver and it decodes 5.1 digital audio perfectly. I applie the region code hack but have not yet tried another region dvd player but when you check the firmware it used to say region code one now it says region code zero. If you have an audio cd it will allow you to rip mp3 files onto the attached usb drive in rates up to 192k. This is a very cool feature the menu gives you track and total progress. It allows realtime speed rip whiles listening to the file and fast rip, meaning you cannot listen to the files while ripping Overall this is a great dvd player, plays the wides variety of formats available, and the menu system is fairly detailed, the only drawback is the remote is oddly laid out sparse on buttons, be pre-pared for menu use and the unit feels flimsy, dvd tray is really thin and delicate, so treat it as you would say a rose, be careful. I got it at bestbuy for $53 I bought the extended warrenty for 2years just in case for $9.99.
