| This is a great DVD player plays almost everything I have thrown at it, except for DVDram. Great video quality, Great Sound Output, Great Features. Hooked my WD 500GB HDD player to the front USB port and voila! 500GB of useable video space for my own video library. My only complaint is that I wish they would add longname and DVDram support. This is most certainly my best DVD player ever when this one goes I'll be back to but a new one. |

This player plays everything I have thrown at it on a DVD. Backup movie DVDs, mpeg files of various vibrates, jpg, mp3, DVDMP3. I have other DVD players that play "most" everything but for the money, this player is great. Plays back-up copies of DVDs on all brand DVD media so far. Perfectly plays grandson's scratched DVDs that other players stopped playing. Picture is great, same as other posts, standard Composite & Component give a great picture and upscale 1080 does work for even a slightly better picture. Hey, it is not a Blu-Ray player but for a sub-$60 unit, this unit is well worth the money.
I can use this DVP5960 for my TIVO backed up files. I use Direct Show Utility to change my .tivo files to .mpg files. I found that an external "My Book" western digital 400 gig disk is pre-formatted in Fat32 (plug and play). I copy files to the "My Book" disk and then I can just plug it into the 5960 USB and it reads the complete 400 gig. You can move through folders with the remote and select any .mpg and play it. (The filename 8 character length can be a challenge when viewing on the 5960) It plays exactly as the original recording looked from the Tivo. The only problem is that Tivo can record in 4 different quality settings, Basic. Medium, High and Best.
According to Google;------------
TIVO video is recorded at 2/3 D1 (480x480) resolution at 29.97 frames per second with constant-bitrate MPEG-2 at one of four bitrates:
Setting Bitrate
Best 5.8 Mbps
High 3.5 Mbps
Medium 2.6 Mbps
Basic 1.47 Mbps
----------------------
I found that the "My Book" disk connected to the 5960 USB will play all Tivo recorded settings EXCEPT the "BEST" quality. The Best recording plays jerky because the 5960 USB1 cannot keep up with the higher transfer rate. It Plays 2 seconds then pauses .5 seconds while the 5960 buffer catches up to the transfer rate then plays 2 sec, then pauses .5 sec, and so on, not viewable. The 5960 also plays jerky like this if you try to play DVD files directly from the My Book disk. (but The same BEST quality .mpg files play fine if copied to a DVD or DVD RW, then play the DVD in the 5960)
For me, the quality between TIVO's Best and High quality is negligible so I will now set all my future Tivo recordings to High and just put them on the "My Disk" external disk)
I am waiting to try the dvp5982 to see if it will allow for faster USB transfer rates But this DVP5960 is a keeper.
I can buy a $1000 HD player and I can still find something to grip about but for less than $60, the 5960 is well worth it.
Ok, the remote is a little stubborn and you have to slowly-deliberately press the buttons but it works ok.
AND
I formatted a different external disk but with multiple FAT32 partitions due to XP's maximum 32gig "Fat32" format size limit, the 5960 will only recognize one of the partitions. You can format larger partitions with an old Win98 PC. |

Great player, incredible value and quality:
Having said that, 2 points:
(1) This player really need a USB 2.0 interface. USB 1.0 throughput is not great enough to play HD-quality content (say, from from a key drive or hard drive) attempting to do so results in choppy display -- but this is a USB throughput problem, not the player chipset/codec itself. USB 2.0 for the USB port would fix it and let us store lots of HD content on a giant hard drive attached to the player.
(2) Downsampling of too-high-resolution MPEG content would be nice. Right not it just says "resolution not supported" if you exceeed around 1920x1380. |

Nice player. Upgraded firmware from philips website
to version 37.06.42.29. Hdmi works very well. Plays mpeg 2 captures from dvb when burned to dvd disc. When using 320g usb hd formatted to fat32 will not play mpeg2 movies from the hard drive. |

After reading this thread for lot of times ( actually too many !!), I bought this player. Till now, things are fine..
I upgraded the firmware too ( from philips website).
Someone mentioned that DTS is not working even after upgrade. DTS is working, but DTS output is only available through Digital Coaxial output, not through RCA (REd/WHite) audio output.. |

I hooked up both HDMI and component cable to my 1080p TV, I pause the movie, then switching among all settings and here are my assessment:
There is a difference among component at 480p, HDMI 480p, 720p and 1080i.
1. Color looked better at HDMI 480p then the component cable (which is 480p) but picture quality are the same
2. Picture quality is best at 1080i, then 720p, then 480p
3. For a good DVD, use 1080i or 720p, but a poor quality video shows better with component cable
4. A 4;3 video only shows correct aspect ratio only with 480p, but a wide screen video show correctly only with 720p or 1080i
Hope these helps |

Its a good player with affordable price. It plays all disks I though in so far.
The upconvert feature is not perfect, but after I experiment over a month time with various videos, I found that it does work depending on the video display format. Se 480p for a 4:3 video, and 720p 0r 1080i for a wide screen movie. I have a 1080p TV, so the 1080i works great for my TV. If you have a 720p TV, your best bet might be 720p. In fact, a 4:3 movie looks stretched in 1080i setting, while a true wide screen movie looks narrow on a 480p setting. Kind of frustrating but I think your TV's view option also plays an important role of whether it works or not.
The latest firmware does work on HDMI with Dolby 5.1 as well as DTS sound track.
The USB 1.1 is kind of disappointing, I think it limits the ability of playing Dvix with Dolby 5.1
It is otherwise a decent player at affordable price. I enjoy watch a good DVD movie with 1080i setting. |

I got this as replacement/upgrade for Philips DVP-642. Selling points for me were HDMI port and USB. Exactly what I was waiting for for some time.
Connected to HD LCD front projector (Sanyo Z3) via HDMI and Onkyo 5.1 receiver via coax digital. Had to buy cables, incidentally both also Philips ($30 for two).
This player only partially fulfilled my expectations. HDMI connection and upconverting were supposed to make the picture shine on my 720p HD projector. This is totally the case with good quality anamorphic widescreen DVDs. In fact I put two exactly same DVDs in this player and DVP-642 hooked via component and flipped the inputs on the projector. The picture is improved more than noticeably on this player: sharper edges with less jaggies, better contrast, less pixelation. Looks great. And good quality PAL movies play great too.
But anything less that good DVD does not improve or even gets worse. Full screen DVD's stretch to edges of widescreen in 720p, letterbox widescreen movies also look squished vertically. Note that in 720p or 1024i my projector (and probably other HD devices) limits the number of different stretch/zoom options from 9 to 2, and therefore there is no way to correct for player's behavior. Switching down out of upconvert hunts the resolution between 480p and 576p (regardless of actual NTSC or PAL format) in a weird manner. I found that while flipping the upconversion button it is better to pause the movie to allow the display device to better lock onto resolution setting.
And if the picture is not upconverted it looks worse via HDMI than via component. Seriously, HDMI makes the picture look digitized, while component smoothes the lack of resolution somewhat.
I don't doubt that it will play anything I would throw on the tray (and I have a collection of VCDs, DivX and MPEG-4 discs) but it is unlikely that the picture would be any better than DVP-642. Therefore DVP-642 stays in my stack, but this player is also a keeper. New one would be dedicated "home theater" player.
The hack for RCE change posted here works, and upgrading the firmware turns on DD and DTS, no problems here. Strangely, the check of firware version before and after shows same values. Nevertheless, the update definitely opens up some previously unaccessible options in setup menu. Note that for 5.1 digital to work after the update, you need to go to setup and change "digital audio" to "all". It is "PCM only" by default.
I was placing much hope on USB port, but was only partially satisfied. USB 1.0 is slow, Philips could really do it right here by putting 2.0 in place and charging little more in price. I only used 1GB CF card in dedicated reader (both Sandisk) and it works all right. I wanted USB for watching photos in HD and that works with a caveat - 3x2 pictures are stretched to full 1.78:1. Besides, large 2-3MB photos load kinda slow via USB 1.0. Therefore, forget about watching your photos straight out of camera. You'll have to convert your 3000x2000 pixel pictures into 912x720 to show in proper ratio. In a word - you'll need to spend some time to sort it out. Otherwise the picture seems adequately detailed and colors rendered reasonably well.
All in all - great idea, so-so implementation. I would readily pay twice as much for this player if the video processing was done on a better level. (I really miss my old Panasonic RP-62 with Faroudja chip)
Same is true for USB 1.0.
It's a great value for the money, but cheap not always means great.

Awesome!!
The Default Brightness is too low try (+18).
It makes the picture.
The MediaTek Chipset MT1389 plays everything I through at it.
Using IMGBurn for DL -/+ works flawlessly.
I formatted a 160 HDD(7200 rpm) to Fat32.
AutoGK with Xvid Codec through USB is great.
Most Videos play at 75% through USB.
Format External HDD to Fat32.
DVDs will play DivX or Xvid at 100%
I attached this player to a standard TV and the Quality was not great, the MediaTek(this players dhipset) is enhanced for Flat Screen TV/Monitors.
HDMI AV is Awesome; one cable does it all.
I read a comment that 1080i is sharper than 720p.
I totally disagree. I'll take p(Progressive) over
i(Interlaced) any day and twice on Sunday.
The icing: .mpg and .vob direct play.
When I capture video on my PC, I had to convert it to DVD before I could play it with old player.
With this player, Capture > Burn(DVD+RW) > Play.
What a time saver.
Picture settings can be adjusted through the DVD player, I had no idea a DVD player could do that.
The Audio settings are just as sweet.
What an incredible steal for seventy bills.
IF PHILIPS UPGRADES TO USB 2.0 I'LL BE THE FIRST IN LINE. |

loved my DVP642/37. so i decided to give it to my parents as a xmas gift and replace it with the 5960 for my own xmas gift. so far its cool... i like the USB. though i tried using a USB 2.0 stick and is said 'Invalid Device'. which made me sad. very sad. but luckily i had USB 1.0/1.1 sticks laying about which did work. i'm hoping it was just because the 2.0 was an off brand (ChipsBnk) i got for free at work from a yahoo! XMAS party. also noticed there is a lack of optical cable output. lame.....i really dug it. so now i'm running off of basic rca composites. havent tried the digital coaxial output yet because i dont have the cable and most stores around here are sold out of it for some reason. though i'm a little discouraged with the people commenting it won't output a 5.1 signal.
so far i'm keeping for only 3 reasons:
a) USB (even if picky)
b) HDMI (i'll be owning a 1080p lcd soon)
c) i gave away my dvp642
i heard oppo's USB dvd player has the same issue with USB 2.0 drives....if they fix it, i will be getting it.
so this player for $60 is fine for now. |

Pros:
- Packet bitstream XviD: works perfectly
- GMC option: works but freezes for about 1 second every 15 seconds
- DivX or XviD with AC3 audio: works perfectly
- USB Port: works with external 3,5" HDD, works with 120Go Samsung 2,5" HDD without external power, not working for 80Go Samsung 2,5" HDD (not enough power, needs more than the USB 1.1 can give, the HDD keeps spinning up and stop repeatedly)
- USB Port: plays everything, MP3, JPEG, DivX, XviD or DVD Files.
- USB Port: works with memory card readers.
- HDMI upscaller: works for DivX and XviD files, way much better than the YUV cable, image is sharp and colorful but you lose the progressive scan from YUV port.
Cons:
- USB Port: external HDD must be on before power up the player or it won't recognize the HDD.
- Loading time for Packet bitstream XviD (about 5-10 secondes).
- File names limited to 7 characters making browsing very hard.
I use it with an external 400Go HDD and don't need to burn my videos on DVD or convert packet bitstream files with mpeg4modifier anymore. The only complains go to the loading time for some files, the USB 1.1 port instead of 2.0 and the limited characters file names.

I got this dvd for $40 from ebay auction as a used item.
DD 5.1 did not work as everyone reports it.
DTS did not work either.
I just update the firmware on 11/14/2006 from Philips sites, then everything is working now.
I have not tested the DL-R dvd yet after upgraded.
I let your guys know if it works.
Thanks

Hi,
I got my dvd for about 2 weeks. After I upgrade the firmware on 11/14/2006, everything is working fine (DTS, DD5.1), except for DVD-R DL.
I thought it should be able to play DVD-R DL.

Never could get the DTS to work. Upgraded the bios. Switched cables, sat for hours thinking it was my DTS reciever having to see COAX cable instead of the optical that I used to use. Nothing.
Turned it back to Best Buy and bought the Toshiba 4990 and it's working just fine. Has better zoom, long file name and more.
While I had the Philips, it looked great, working with basic stereo sound. The usb was no problem, I bought a usb 4 gig at Fry's, loaded up a dvd movie, inserted it, and a few seconds later it was playing.
No formattilng the usb drive, no nothing, just plug and play. Pictures-jpgs worked fine too.
I'd still have it if I could get the 5.1 sound to work. |

| Works great. Plays everything I have put in. Play Divx great. Also starts up really fast. Only takes about 4 seconds to read the DVD and start up. |

strangely enough this player supports my brothers older 4 gig Ipod nano but doesnt support my 30 gig Ipod video (the first gen one). Anyone got any clues as to why?
Other than that its a great player no problems whatsoever. Was playing xvids off the nano just fine with a slight pause every now and then.
*Note* i have not flashed it to the latest firmware. this is all out of box talk. |

Great looking picture, I only use this for DIVX files off the internet. Has played all xvid and divx files flawlessly. I highly recommend this player.
I have played files off a thumb drive, off a DVD+R (6 movies per disk), and even a DVD+R DL disk where I wrote 11 movies to it. All 11 were 700mb or greater, 2 were between 800-900mb.
I thought this was a great value, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Plays all my mp3, jpg, wma and divx (with subtitles) via USB from my Freecom 250 GB external harddisk. Harddisk is formatted as one partition type FAT32 with the freewareprogramm "swissknife" (NTFS does not work)
Perfect! |

| What sells this player for me is the USB port will take my 250GB Maxtor HD even though the Best Buy guy said it wouldn't. Really no major complaints so far. |

Can anyone recommend the best way to convert files that have resolutions too high to something compatible?
I'm finding more and more stuff from Hi-Def sources won't play as the resolution is not supported.
Thanks..
