Haven't used this player long, though it seems nice so far. I wanted to clear up some of the confusion seen here about this player and DTS support.
Contrary to what another poster said, DTS does not require an optical connection, digital coax works fine. As long as your receiver can decode DTS, and the setting for digital signals is set to ALL on the player, this works.
The only situation where you won't get audio at all is if you select a DTS soundtrack without a decoding receiver or by plugging the player's stereo output into something. You would have to choose the Dolby Digital track which can be decoded by the player into an analog stereo signal. Honestly though, neither type of digital signal is going to do much for you when it is going to a stereo-only device. |

I've had this player for about 8 months now, bought it to replace a DVP642 that finally died on me one day.
I've had nothing but good things to say at first, but with time it seems to get worse and worse.
After a period of about 2 months began to refuse to play some avi files burned on the DVD+r's. Even though it played them fine in the beginning. Also stopped playing some avi files completely, if there are too many files on the disc and or if the files are of different sizes ex. 300megs and a 700megs or 1.3gig files. It will selectively play only files it wants.
In addition some burned DVD movies get stuck on chapters and will not move forward. Tried same movie on two other DVD players an old Daytek and my friends DVP642 worked fine there.
In addition Dual layer +R discs seem to get stuck in the middle of the disc, it either has problems reading and/or just skips forward a bit and/or freezes completely. This applies to original and burned DVD's.
As of the last 3 weeks it refuses to play any movies burned on to the CDr's. And on a DVD+R's refuses to play and/or even has trouble forwarding divx files selective files.
I have today purchased a Toshiba SD-4000 and all the so called "problem" discs that did not play on the DVP 5140 play like magic.
I hope this was helpful and maybe you can share your thoughts on what is happening with your DVP 5140.
P.S. The player was used for at least 3-4 hours on a daily basis. |

Plays DVDs and mp3 OK which is all I've tried with it. It played a few Verbatim DVD +R DLs I burned that I couldn't get to play on a Panasonic S35.
It has a cool zoom and 4 slow speeds forward and back which is cool, but it can't go from slow to pause which I hate.
The only other big drawback I found is it is very slow to start up and get the drawer open. It takes about 10 seconds just for that which is a little annoying. |

Burned these 2 (350MB each) to a CD-R:
betty_neptune.2x13.ws_dvdrip_xvid.avi
betty_neptune.2x14.ws_dvdrip_xvid.avi
only 1 showed up on the dvd player as:

but both showed up in cd-rom on comuter.
renamed them to

and burned to cd-r.

I would have given it a 9 but for 3 things.
One is known i.e. NO OPTICAL AUDO OUT although COAXIAL is as good.
Second when player powers off, it does not resume from previously viewed position, thats very annoying.
Third is even though it played almost all formats I threw at it, failed to play some PAL encoded VCD or VCDs with Mix-Contents. Also I had a DVD with 6-7 DIVx on it, it failed to play 3 of them, played remaining 4. Can here audio well but for picture it says no signal. Same codecs in all the DIVx so I am not able to understand this issue. All these files play well on PC. Some of them have DIVX extension and some AVI. It plays some DIVX and some AVI doesnt play some. |

I bought my Philips DVP5140 (actually DVP5140/37) close to 2 months ago to replace a Lite-on Divx player (I believe was model # LVD 2002) that I had used heavily for about about 4 years (by heavily , I estimate using it to watch about 2500 full-length movies, and again that many shorter term uses. I've easily burnt 3000 films in that period. I've kept approximately 1200 of those films, and probably burnt twice that many more that I didn't keep. I use CD-RW disks, as it is the cheapest way to go for my type of use. These films were, basically, all in VCD, XVID/Divx formats, as is the case with the disks I've used with the Philips player.
FORMATS - I've had no problem playing any particular format, and in fact, so far, there's nothing that hasn't played yet (although it's only been a couple of months), and I would say it is better than the Lite-On was, in that regard. MEDIA - No problems with media type, although it's been only a few of the common brands that I've used so far - like TDK, Sony, and Memorex. I might add that I've had problems with Memorex a couple of times in the past, and with a couple of different types. In fact, none of the Memorex would play on the Lite-On at the end - which, indeed, was faulty, I know - but all the other brands still played on it. SUBTITLES - I watch quite a few foreign films, which I subtitle, and haven't seen any playing problems there either.
PROBLEMS -
The player does have a couple of problems though. SEARCHING - The biggest is in the searching department. If for any reason you have to, or want to, start over at the beginning and go to a particular point in the film, the only way to do this is to fast forward to that point (now this is for the VCD,XVID/Divx formats - don't know about the pre-recorded "store-bought DVDs"). This can really be a pain if it is late in the film. I've found a big difference in the fast forward speed between XVID/Divx films and VCD films. I can fast forward a 1hr.30 min. XVID/Divx film, from start to finish, in about 35-60 sec. as a general rule - which ain't too bad. VCD is a different story though. I find the rate on every one of the VCDs to be about 10 minutes film travel for every 30 seconds of fast forwarding - or in the case of a 1hr.30sec. (90min) movie, that would take about 270 seconds, or between 4-5 minutes! Not good at all. So if you take more than 5 minutes to get a snack, or your power goes off, or you want to see what what's-her-name looked like with her clothes off again, it can take a long time to get back to where you were. There's even a worse potential situation. If you have a bad spot in the film or disk, and the movie stops there, you better hope that repeated tries to get past that point lead to a successful one, because if you can't fast forward past that point, that's it for you watching that film. I've been lucky enough so far, but I did have one that took about a 1/2 hr. of messing around with to luckily succeed in getting past the bad spot.
TITLE LIMIT - Another problem, which really isn't a big deal (compared to the searching problem), is the title problem. It only shows 14 characters of the title name, and any other info you might have included (I add the film's year, time length, and format).
REVERSING - Again, not so big of a problem to me. When you want to go back to see something, it might say 2x or 4x, but it's a whole lot faster than that - probably a good 16x. That's not so bad, except if you just wanted to go back a few seconds or so. It makes it a little tricky. If you put one thumb on the reversing button, and one on the "Play" button, you can control it fairly well.
Well, these are my general observations on the player. I haven't had it long enough to know some of the other details of it. If you can get this player in the $50 range, as I did, you really can't go wrong. It appears that it will play just about any format out there. The only real gripe I have about it is the searching problem, which, depending on your viewing habits, can be a big pain in the butt. I guess I can't squawk too loud about it though, as I was aware of this problem before I bought it. I guess I figured that for only 50 bucks, I could live with it. |

Failed to meet expectations. I bought this player to replace an old Apex I gave my mother, because the Apex 600A was not handling all media well, in particular a disk of JPG's and a Verbatim DVD+RDL disk.
All the reviews said there was no problem with media. This player failed miserably. I wasn't concerned about DivX at this point. While it did handle my JPG CD-R disk that the APEX 600A didn't, it FAILED to load a Princo DVD-R that the APEX loaded with no issues (and it took forever to tell me). The APEX wasn't handling a Verbatim DL disk (considered among the most reliable), and neither did this heap. My old APEX 1100 has no problems with either media. |

Works great except that i sometime have issues with subtitles.. the subtitles will work for 20min then they will disappear until i hit the subtitle button on the remote. .srt files dont seem to be displayed correctly, they seemd to be cut off, but this could be due to the fact that the .srt contains åäö characters...
Other than this its fantastic, Plays everything! |

For many years I used a 100 disc CD changer on random play to listen to my music collection. It was like listening to the radio, but without the commercials. When it broke, I discovered that it couldn't be replaced. I did notice that some DVD players were able to playback MP3 files. I decided to look for an inexpensive DVD player that could randomly play MP3 files to replace my CD changer.
As I began my research, I discovered that most DVD players could not play MP3 files from a DVD disc. For the ones that could, the maximum readable MP3 files was 999. I also discovered that most had the random play function buried deep in menu choices. I realized I needed one that had a dedicated random play button on the remote.
I purchased one player that would read MP3 files from a DVD disc and had a random button, but random play would not work on DVD discs so I returned it. I found a second player and discovered from the downloaded user manual that it had a random button on the remote. I bought it from a store that did not display the remote. When I got it home, I discovered that it came with a different remote than the one described in the user manual and totally lacked random play ability. I took it back too.
Further research produced the Philips DVP5140 and I was able to download its user manual. I was able to test it in the store and found that it would read MP3 files from a DVD and go into random mode from the remote by pressing the repeat button four times.
When I got it home, I made up a test disc with 1020 MP3 files and began to play it. I found that it would read from both DVD +R and DVD +RW discs but something seemed to be wrong. Many of the tracks were not playing. Since you can't tell much from the player's display, I temporarily connected it to a TV where I discovered that the maximum number of MP3 files it could access is 648. I called technical support and they confirmed this number. I've decided to keep this player but I'm disappointed that the user manual did not state this limitation. |

I absolutely confirm what Michael said in his post 2 weeks ago...
- The 2x reverse mode for avi files is in fact much faster. I'd say it's around 16x indeed, which is extremly annoying when you try to playback only a few seconds..
- Multiple Subtitles: I have now tested hundreds of text based subtitles (.srt and .sub) for avi Movies encoded in DivX-Xvid and the subtitles do work, but there are some problems I ran into. Here are my conclusions to avoid them:
a) When burning a data DVD with several movies. I put each movie along whith its subtitles in a seperate directory. That's normally good enough. But if there are movies that are splitted in two parts (e.g. CD1 and CD2) AND there is more than one subtitle language (e.g. english, french, italian) I put the avi's in seperate sub-directories along with the subs, naming them "1_part" and "2_part" or so. This way the player won't be confused which subtitle to display.
b) Although this player supports 5 types of subtitles, I only tested SubRip (.srt) and .sub files. I came to the conclusion that you shouldn't mix these to two formats for one movie. So, for example:
The.Movie.Name.2005.DvdRip.avi
The.Movie.Name.2005.DvdRip.eng.srt
The.Movie.Name.2005.DvdRip.fre.sub
The.Movie.Name.2005.DvdRip.ita.srt
There are 3 subtitles (2x srt, and 1x sub), which results in troubles displaying them. (as a consequence I convert the .sub file to a .srt in "Subtitle Workshop").
c) When the subs don't appear, try first to quit the movie, go back to the directory and select the movie again. This sometimes works...
d) There are relatively few DivX-Xvid movies I couldn't play. Two errors: "GMC not supported" and "Video bitrate out of range" or something like that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Motion_Compensation
e) So normally I avoid movies with a "HDrip" instead of a "DVDrip" tag, or movies splitted in three parts (CD1,CD2 and CD3).
That's all there is to my limited experience. What I know for sure is, that it is very frustrating when subs don't show up, or the movie doesn't even play, especially when you invested quite some time in preparing a DVD-R with 3 movies...
What I didn't figure out though, is how to make the player to show the current language of your subtitle...it always shows e.g. "1/3 miscellaneous" although I've tried several possibillities, such as naming the subtitle file: .en.srt, eng.srt, _eng.srt, but "english" doesn't show up....
I bought this player in Switzerland for a bit more than 100 US$ but it's now below the 100 Swiss Franc mark (80$). For such a low price (although it is not as cheap as at "Walmart" in the US), I can live with those flaws, hopping, that one day, I can buy a cheap Player with USB-2, support for GMC and more features.
Untill then... |

One problem I've had with this player is with reverse while playing AVI files. Even in 2x reverse mode, it is extremely fast, easily three to four times faster than 2x fast forward mode. It doesn't do this while playing normal DVD's.
I also had an aspect ratio problem with playing back MPEG files on an ISO DVDR. I played a 16:9 MPEG file in PAL format (720x576) -- it played in 4:3 mode, so that the image was stretched. |

| This player is superb. I've yet to play a divx or xvid file that this won't play. MP3, AC3, MPA audio, all of them work. PAL to NTSC conversion with correct aspect ratios. Region hack works just fine. The only problem I've had has been with an MPEG2 file burned on an ISO disc at 720x576, 16:9 anamorphic -- it played back in 4:3 aspect ratio. Also can't beat the price -- got it for $49.99 at Wal-mart. |

Great player while it lasted.
After playing some divx files on a memorex cdrw (while playing it was making a lot of noise), the player stop playing my divx files on any cdr. I can occasionally get it to play if i eject/load it enough times. Not sure what I did wrong but don't use cdrws with this player. Regular dvd's play perfect with no noise.
Anyone else have this problem? |

| This player has played everything I threw into it... and I do mean EVERYTHING. The chipset in this player is first class. It plays so smooth, even when its FFWing or RWing. 32x is pretty damn fast and even at that speed its real smooth playing. This thing has a 12bit DAC and has far superior video quality than my Magnavox MWD-7006. The remote is pretty gay though. Its small, sorta ergonomic but lacking features... even such obvious ones as an eject button on the remote. Oh yeah, it plays MPEGISO's off DVD/CD/DVDRW/CDRW. Even when the MPG's are mixed with Xvid on the same DVD!!!! AWESOME. The same with MP3's and WMA's, you can mix them on a DVD or cd and they will still play. WAV's not supported. I dont know how high the bitrate can go on the mp3's. The highest I tested was 320, which is way way to high for me. But it worked flawlessly. ID3 support is there. It also plays VBR mp3's. I tested it with a VBR mp3 that ranged from 160k-192k throughout the song, it played perfectly but i did notice the on screen display was not reporting it as VBR, the machine either thought it was or was treating it like a 190k cbr, never moving off that 190k point for the whole song. So i dunno about that. One thing I do not like is that this player has no long filename support. 14-15 characters is all it allows which wont do for me since i like to rename my movies to thier scene/release name which can be like 40-70 chars long :/ I was spoiled by my Magnavox MWD7006 and its 25-26 character filenames :( But that is my only gripe about this player [no long filename support and no eject button on the DVD remote]. Needless to say, if you want a Xvid/DivX player that doesnt cost too much and plays anything then this is the one for you. I got mine for $50 on sale at Wal-Mart. Oh yeah, i dont wanna forget to mention the HACK that this player has... very simple to do, it just consists of entering a few numbers on the remote then switching the region to 0, and viola.... you now have a REGION FREE player that plays PAL movies just as good as it does NTSC! |

i love this DVD player. I have been using my laptop hooked up to my tv for ever. the quality was just no there for me. This player has played all my movies (Divx, Xvid etc..) with no problems. the only movie that did not play was the new bruce willis movie (13 blocks)? it said (Resolution not supported) no clue.
I would buy this unit again for sure!!

Does what Philips claims.
For a great review see http://home.wi.rr.com/ntngod/dvp642_vs_dvp5140/
My home theater receiver decodes DTS so I don't care if the player can not.
Remote adds some functionality but isn't going to win any awards for ergonomics or design. I have a Logitech Harmony remote so the Philips remote is a moot point.
Like having 14 alphanumerics for file name display but hate that you can only see 4 files at a time.
Doesn't squish 720 aspect like the DVP642!
Displaying subtitles on your self-burned discs is easier than before. Good job Philips.
Had to re-encode one DIV3 avi file's audio (think it might have been DivX WMA) to MP3 in order to hear the audio track.
Tray would not open when eject button pushed on rare occassions. It will not open during the very early part of loading the disc, but I am talking about when the disc is not being loaded or during play. Also, unlike the DVP642, the player will not eject the disc until you turn on the power (the DVP642 would turn on the power and eject the disc when the eject button pushed while the player was off - no biggie).
Does not like my Verbatim 4X DVD+RW and Memorex 8X DVD+RW discs - will load and vibrate like an unleveled washing machine, though unloading and reloading or just playing a file will get rid of vibrations. Has also done this with a Retail DVD. Does not happen with CD-R or DVD+R discs (these have all been Taiyo Yuden.) Overall, the vibrations essentially stopped or only happened rarely after the first week or two.
Reverse function does not smoothly go from 2X to 4X to 8X to 16X to 32X with my home burned DVD's and CD's. Instead, the reverse seems to immediately go to 8X. Happens on all burned discs. Does not happen on Retail discs.
Called Philips Tech Support, who had no definitive answer at that time, and decided to return to store for replacement.
The replacement I just got today does exactly the same things bad/strange things and, on top of that, is very squeaky loading the disc (sounds like a loud bird chirping) and makes a ticking noise while playing the file (all avi's so far). Maybe this will quiet down after a while as the parts get worked in.
Since I don't use reverse much and the vibration issue may resolve like the first player I had, I would give this player a 9/10 due to its price to performance ratio. If the squeaking and ticking do not quiet down soon, I will be returing it for another one. Maybe I can get my old one back! |

| Just some useful info to clear up the questions about DTS audio support. DTS audio is only supported through a digital OPTICAL out connection(your receiver will do the actual decoding), as is stated by the standard specification . The other possibility is if the DVD player hardware itself fully decodes DTS, which means it will have 6 ("5.1") RCA style audio outputs(one for each speaker) to connect to your receiver(which should then have 6 RCA style audio inputs). |

OK, this post is further to my other (just beneath). I discovered that the primary problem I was having was with the DVDs. When I burned them I must have got an error as I am discovering the laptop will also not play them.
SO...I am increasing the unit's score to an 8. Incidently I purchased the RCA 247N for $20 less and it is almost identical to the Philips! See RCA review for more info. |

I have bought this to use primarily as a DVD player for work, but I brought it home for a week to run some DivX & XviD tests as I was considering buying one myself. I paid $69CAD at Memory Express in Edmonton.
So far I have very mixed feelings about the unit. It plays some XViD titles perfectly. Others start well, but just stop working half way through. The DVDs themselves are clean & new.
I discovered that it doesn't always read files that are in a folder - but other files it will read. For example I have a DVD with several MP4 files. One of the movies was in its own directory. I browsed to the directory on the player, clicked on the file.....nothing. As an experiment I remade the DVD and placed the files in the root directory of the DVD. Worked perfectly. Odd.
I noticed some of my XViD "Friends" series did not work. I discovered it was because the audio track was ogg. This player does not support ogg. Demuxed the audio & converted it to mp3, player reads it now - although this evening it is refusing to load about one third of the Series 2 files. Needless to say, the files work fine on the PC.
All my tests have been conducted on the only DVD media I have here ATM - Ritek 8x +R.
I am going to try the RCA player on sale at Walmart and see how it fares with the same discs. |

| Plays Divx and Xvid fine. Plays divx/xvid on all media types i listed as being tried. Eject function although not a seperate key on the remote can be done easily. Hold down on the stop button on the remote for a few seconds until the display says OPEN. Does not play Nero MP4 files. |

Good DivX/XviD compatibility.
14 Character File Name Limit
Timer function: Set it up to 1 hour and it will turn itself off.
Remote IR field narrow and weak. Won't bounce a signal off a wall like many remotes will do.
Plays DivX/XviD titles in sequence without stopping. Doesn't return to main menu after a title. Plays all titles on the disc before stopping.
Remote will eject disc: Hold stop button down for a few seconds.
FAQ at Philips tells how to reset the player when Progressive has erroneously been set - or - unplugging for 15 seconds is supposed to reset the player. |
