Excellent recording quality. I mostly use it on the 2x setting (2.5 Hrs). Recently been experiencing problems as per the comments of:-
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid ... ts=0#54872
This is after about 80 mins of continuous recording the recording breaks up & jumps all over the shop.
I think it because the player over heats. If I force cool it with a fan heater set to blow cold air only, and the disks are in perfect condition (no scratches at all) everything is fine. I upgraded to the latest firmware and this doesnt seem to help. Im guessing that the laser that resets (erases) the bits in the disk prior to over recording stops working, as the problems appear to be the previous recording breaking through. A new blank disk is always 100% ok.
Can anyone help me with a fix?
PS: I would buy one again, but would definitely pay to extend the warrenty past 12 months. |

Worried to death it will stop working soon. Bought it 11 months ago now and Im very happy with it overall. It has crashed about 3 times on me but thats about it
I never once read the instructions have just pressed the buttons and looked where to plug the stuff in. It does excally what I wanted it for. To record my battered old Red dwarf, Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie episodes along with my hours of Jasper Carrott, Bewitched and Manics Supplement footage. Its taken me til now to do it all, I now use it also to do other stuff but I still worry I wore it out doing all that footage.
Back to the product. Its easy to use but it automaticly puts chapter points in every 5 mintues and thats stuck like that. You can put your own in but their only reconised on the phillips player. Any other player you play them in will only reconise the original 5 mintue ones. The menus given to you by the recorder are quite simple and basic, but its very good if you simply want to transfer your videos to dvd without too much fuss.
It 'plays' DVD-R's perfect too, but your stuck with + for recording, but thats no bad thing to my mind |

| Not many problems with this DVD recorder. When I first got it, it didn't like +R disks but a firmware upgrade sorted that. A later firmware upgrade allowed FW and RW at x8 on the remote and additional characters for titles. In fact, the remote is probably the worst part of the machine with the fast forward/backward feature using the same button as chapter skip. This is a real pain and the chapter skip should be on separate buttons. However, you can do this with a programmable remote like a pronto so all is not lost. The problem reported where NTSC DVDs play in black and white is a problem with the TV not the DVDR. This is because the Philips actually outputs an NTSC encoded signal which some TVs can't handle. The answer in this situation is to watch NTSC DVDs using RGB via the scart connector instead of using the RF lead or composite signal via the scart. A good machine. |

I've had the recorder for about a week.
I use Verbatim DVD+RW, then rip the recordings with Tmpgenc DVD Author, reauthor and burn to DVD+R - if I want to keep the recordings. I usually erase the recordings from the RW quickly, to get more free space for more timed recordings. Remember that this recorder makes lots of tiny vob-files, so I was very happy to find that tmpgenc managed to rip the recordings properly.
ShowView works fine. Those channels that boardcasts their channel names are automatically entered when I enter the correct showview code. So less chance for error there. Showview would have cut the ending off a program yesterday, since the program started way too late. I realized it would happen before the program started (after it had started recording). I managed to turn the timed recording off by pressing the power button on the remote. Then turn it on (and it turned promptly off again), on again and then record manually.
I had a problem yesterday with one channel on cable TV here. I believe the sound was turned a bit high from the cable co. I got some noise now and then, and some white lines across the bottom of the screen. Only occasionally. I've seen this complaint other places on the net (epinions?), and I believe it's connected to TV channels with the wrong sound levels, which in my experience happens more often than you'd think. My TV also had some slight noise in the same places. I had that problem before with another TV channel (they fixed it later), and I then noticed that my hi-fi VCR got rid of the noise. I would usually use the tuner on that VCR instead of the TV's own tuner during that period. In other words, it depends on the tuner. I was also told by someone from the cable co that you can fiddle with the settings and turn down the sound for specific channels in your TV. Not sure if it's true. At any rate, as I told him, it's better to fix a central problem that's likely to affect a lot of people, rather than fiddle with the settings on your TV...
I compared the tuner on my TV and the built in tuner. My TV has murkier colors, especially on older material (like from the eighties). The DVDR70 has paler, slightly colder colors. It initially blew me away, it looked a lot better than my TV. Now I'd say it depends on the TV channel and the program - what I'd prefer. At the same time, apart from the problems with incorrectly configured TV-channels, it seems to have a very nice tuner.
Once I got my head around how the DVDR70 handles, it's quick and easy to use. I'd rather have one with a hard drive, but it's still too expensive. I also noticed the unrecorded item on the menu. I just assumed it's dangerous to have one of the previous recordings marked when you turn the machine off or start recording something. To be safe, I always have the unrecorded item marked when I turn it off or start recording.
What REALLY irritated me, was that when I'd connected my other DVD player via scart to the DVDR70, it immediately turned on and started recording as soon as I turned the other DVD player on. So, I'll have to think of another way to overcome my TV's lack of a second scart connection...
So far I've only watched DVD's recorded with M1 and M2, and they're really good. I'll start checking out other modes soon. No idea what firmware I'm on. |

BatGirl_666,
Are you sure that after upgrading to the latest Philips dvr70 firmware version all 6 compression modes now use the full 720*576 PAL resolution. I downloaded and upgraded to the latest firmware version 6.3 (base_20040607_LFF16k) from www.p4c.philips.com but I have found that the 3, 4 and 6 hour recording modes still use the 352*576 PAL resolution.
Has anyone else found that after upgrading to the latest firmware that all 6 recording modes use the full 720*576 resolution?

Since my comment posted on October 20, 2003 (see below), I upgraded the firmware with versions downloaded late August 2004 on www.p4c.philips.com (base_sys_20031219_FF15p & base_20040607_LFF16k). Unfortunately Philips doesn't provide any information on what has changed with each firmware upgrade.
Biggest improvement I have found is that now all 6 compression modes use the full 720*576 PAL resolution, just as I wished in my old comment ! I can now use M3 (3 hours/disk) or M4 (4 hours/disk) modes on a single disk (for long tv shows) without loosing anything significant in image quality, while I was previously limited to M2x (2.5 hours/disk) mode. The new algorithms are **way** better, it's as if I had bought a new recorder.
The high contrast problem still remains (white zones are rendered whiter), and setting the "black level shift" switch to "on" in the settings page doesn't seem to help.
I only once experienced a disk error problem with a DVD+RW; the only solution was to take the power plug off. I mainly use Philips 2.4x or 4x DVD+RW media. If needed I use PC software to edit the recordings (cut the commercials etc) and burn the final DVD±R.
The DVDR70 now sells for about 300 euros in Belgium (21% VAT in) as Philips has the new HDRW720 in stores for about 700 euros, this one using an 80Gb hard disk.

| The DVDR70 dvdrecorder is a great product with excellent picture and audio quality. But this depends of course on the quality settings. When recording in "2x mode" you get 2,5 hours of recording in great quality, but when recording more than 3 hours on a DVD the quality gets poorer. The machine is easy to install and to use, but personally i find the menus a bit slow and boring. The menus consists mainly of symbols which sometimes are explained by a little box of text information. But when you really need the help, the info-box isn´t there. The DVDR70 have also crashed about six times (i have used it for recording about 60 hours) so i called Philips about the problem this day and they said that the problem probably would be solved by a software update that they were going to send me by mail. I bought the recorder in June 2004 and paid 2995 SEK = 350 EUR. Overall i am very pleased with the product. |

| I bought this DVD recorder from Dixons back in November 2003, i was pleased with the performace of it and quality of recordings until I started to get a problem... If I record anything longer than about 80 minutes in standard recording mode, the playback is fine until about the 80 minute mark when it begins to jump terribly and makes the recording unwatchable. My Dad has got one too, and he has exactly the same problem. We've only ever tried Packard Bell DVD+R & DVD+RW disks on this drive so its possible that the media is the problem, I havent got round to buying any different disks because i'm a bit pissed off with it! Anyone else had similiar problems? |

For Scott Clark:
I'm deaf too and use 888. As far as I can tell my DVDR70 does not record the teletxt signal - leastways it won't replay teletext subtitles on my Toshiba TV - but the teletext decoder of the set may not be active in AV input mode. |

I am interested in getting one of these, can anyone tell me if this (or any model of DVD recorder)will record the subtitles that you can activate via teletext on terrestrial tv? As a deaf person this is vital to me , so I need to know before I get one

Bought this recorder yesterday from Apollo2000 for £240 and it plays just everything i have thrown at it DVD-R/RW, VCD/SVCD,MP3with no problems found have only tried 2 DVD+RW so far 1 from Phillips and another from Ritek but both record and playback well,Just remember when recording on RW to record in safe mode(hold down Rec button for a few seconds)or u will overwrite a few seconds of the prev recording.
Another thing i can't work out is that just for a bit of fun i hooked up another DVD player to the EXT2 of the recorder and tried to record a retail disc and to my amazement it works without any macro problems, tried this on 4 retail discs and all work fine.I also tried using EXT1 but got Macro problems. So i don't really know why i was able to overide the copy protection of the recorder as i only hooked it up and pressed play on the player and record on the recorder,so that is an unexpected bonus.. |

The lower the recording quality, the more it looks like as if there is noise in the antenna signal. The picture becomes grainy, even though the antenna-signal itself is OK. At first I thought there was something wrong with the antenna-system in the house, but I read in the trouble-shooting FAQs on the Philips-website that this is normal (this info is not to be found in the trouble-shooting section in the manual!).
The recorder does not play DVD+Rs made with DVD X Copy on the PC, the exact same copy made on DVD+RW will play!! I have not yet tried other DVD-writing programs.
Playing original DVDs will give an unsatisfactory picture. The blacks become way too bright (the become grey), including the black beams on top and bottom on 4:3 TVs. Recorded DVDs and DVDs copied on the PC will give good results strangely enough. Maybe it has something to do with the copy protection on those original DVDs???
Note, the recorder is directly connected to the TV via Euro AV/cable (SCART), but it also does this on composite-out (CVBS). I don't know about the S-Video-output (Y/C).
The firmware version on my recorder is newer than the one Philips has on its website. Mine is release P1_7_a dated 20030926, the firmware on the website is release P1_6_a dated 20030702.
The ffw-function by holding the track skip buttons on the rc for a second also includes 8x in P1_7_a.
An earlier report said something about vertical lines in the lowest three recording qualities (M3, M4, M6). I have not encountered this problem. Maybe the newest firmware adressed this problem.

Peter, here's what you have to do:
1) Insert a used DVD+RW disc with space left (i.e. an "Empty title" in the bottom of the title list)
1) enter your record detail in the timer section (channel, date, start, end, quality recording)
2) go back to the "title" menu: you'll see a vertical red line on the right side of the screen: this line is a "meter" of your timing recorder: its size is the lenght of the timer recording, its position states the start "zone" of the disc.
3) move down to the "empty title": the red line will move down too.
4) power down your recorder (standby), making it ready for timer recording
I assure you THIS WORKS!
Hope this helps
Bye
Giorgio
