Initially I loved it - it was a great replacement for my old VHS, but then (after about 6 months) it started randomly corrupting the discs (if you recorded a disc completely full, it didn't want to recognize the disc anymore, so all the data was lost since you couldn't finish the disc anymore!). And then more problems occurred: the disc bay didn't want to open, it didn't want to read any discs and finally it didn't start up at all. It worked fine for two weeks after repairing it, but then the warranty ended and the problems reoccurred, so it was time to change to a better DVR.

Good thing was that there were firmware updates that cured some bugs, and that it had great picture quality. When it worked, it was a nice thing, but all the malfunctions definitely make it something you want to avoid. And who would buy a non-HDD DVR these days anyway?

Do not buy this machine,
We bought one about two years ago and constantly had problems recording, they changed the dvd deck and still no good, it dosen't matter what media you use it is unpredictable, it plays dvd's, but now if i record and then try to finalise the disk it ruins the disk, i have downloaded firmware updates and installed them (when i was finaly able to connect to the download site) still no good, i have a £230 dvdplayer.
Do Not Buy

Despite all the negative reviews I have seen around all the glitches now seem to have been sorted in the newer firmwares. This is a first rate recorderwith very good picture quality. It takes a bit of time to set up TV channels etc. but once done is very easy to use. Firmware upgrades are well within the scope of any average PC user.It cost me €129-00 including EMC(recycling) charge and 21% VAT.I am happy with my purchase.

I love this dvd recorder, recordings are superb even those recordings made on the 8 hour mode are good being equal to vhs recordings. The settings for tuning in the tv channels etc dose seem quite complex at first but you soon get used to them. The only real down side is that the remote is small with fiddly little buttons but on the whole this is a great recorder.

This machine is excellent, does all it says on the box!

The menus are intuative and easy to use. Had no problems with clocks, etc. Easy to finalise the discs so that they play on other machines and can confirm that they play on at least three different models.

Recording quality is excellent.

If you want an easy to use, cheap player, this is the one.....

If it was possible to open the DVD tray I might have been able to be more objective than what I am about to write.

This system is terrible. If you are unfortunate enough to load a DVD it doesn't like the whole system becomes unusable - the DVD will not open and the whole system has to be returned to the retailer - pretty useless if you bought the system via the web. Philips customer support are as good as useless.

For the 3 days it did work I was pleased but I am one of those old fashioned people who believe the Mean Time Before Failure should be longer than 3 days. Maybe I was expecting too much for my £120.

A complete and utter waste of money.

Bought this recorder in Nov04. Suffered the timer problems which has been corrected by upgrading the firmware. So far have upgraded firmware three times. Still have problems with recorder switching off while recording which is very annoying and makes it redundant. I would not buy a Philips DVDR again: one problem after another.

The machine itself is stylish and the picture is fine. The remote is fiddly & awful. Why is there no separate fast forward button, instead this is located together with the tiny step forward button? If you press this button once you jump through the film ruining the experience.

My setup: Sony TV, this Philips DVDR and panasonic freeview box.

After plugging it in, it would not respond to the remote. Took a while to figure the remote was in tv mode - very annoying - tv mode is no good to me with a philips tv anyway.

Worked for a while, but then would not record more than 6 seconds. Got replacement. Shop said the whole christmas batch were returned.

Keeps on cutting into the tv when in standby - snipped scart cable pin 8 to stop this.

Remote is small and most buttons are multifunction which is confusing. Up/down/left/right buttons are hard to find without looking/thinking. Menus are non-intutitive. Whole thing has a sluggish response. Manual is not great. Difficult product for non tech minded poeople. Only for the very patient.

Hi there,

I have found the DVDR610/05 so far pretty good and I' m really looking forward to start recording my old VHS in my DVDs...but there is something that I'm really struggling at the moment and this is the chance to get a multiregion view!(I'm in region "2" and I want be able to watch movies in region "1")

I have tried several times the steps as posted in this forum but is not working at all....Is it my mistake? Is it the remote control? I'm not able at all to see the numbers in the display and I'm a little bit frustrated!

Can someone give me a step by step procedure to follow?

Thanks a lot for your help....my girlfriend is wrecking my head!

Living in France, I searched a long time for an affordable solution to record my NTSC tapes on DVD, and I finally found it!
My VCR outputs PAL60 instead of "pure" NTSC, and this DVDR can record PAL60.
On quality respect, I would not say it is excellent. It is quite great. If you are used to spot ringing effects, you will find some. Especially around text, even in 2 hours mode. Depending of what you record, picture is very close to the original air signal, but do not be too picky when recording sport.
Picture type is interlaced.
I confirm the multiregion trick works.

This is my first DVD Recorder. Bought it because of the price (£180) and looks - a lot more stylish than some of the other 'square' models knocking around. So far, so good. No problems at all using Philips branded DVD+RWs. Recorded in up to 4 hours mode with still excellent picture and sound quality. Playback is excellent. Discs also play on PC but not on some other DVD Players - a bit 'hit and miss'. Also plays my old VCDs / SVCDs. Bought beginning of March '05 with updated firmware and so far have experienced none of the problems mentioned on previous reports. Found it very easy to setup and use. Remote is a bit small but on screen instructions guide you through most things. The fan is a little irritating but you get used to it. Overall a very good buy.

I got one of these for xmas and it lasted 4 days before locking up with a DVD stuck inside and reporting "Blocked". There was no way to manually eject the tray so I took it back and got a new machine from Currys. Worked great up until this week, same fault as before: DVD stopped playing and unit reports "Blocked". DVD stuck firmly inside. Had no problems with the reported clock or remote problems. Quality down to 4 hour mode is very good, haven't tried the 8 hour mode yet.

Plays all i put in it including those weird formatted, 2 hours film on half a disc, off the market DVD's.
Writes flawlessly to DVD+r and DVD+rw. Quality is excellent. 6 hour mode is comparable to VHS quality. 3-4 hours is like S-VHS. Above is like broadcast.
No blockiness. Quiet fan. Only let down by poor manual and fiddly remote but give it a couple of hours and you'll have it worked out completely.
Much better than the LiteOn 5001, 5002, 5005, 5006 rubbish. No green tints or picture jitters!
Region free hack works perfectly.
Recommended at this price:
£198 Argos UK
£170 online if you look around.
Latest firmware BT26 cures all the problem people have been having with the clock etc.

I bought my Philips DVDR 610 in the january sale at our local TESCO store where the unit was going for 269 Euro, after playing with it and getting used to the functions i found it had no EJECT button, however pressing and holding the STOP button for 2 seconds will OPEN drawer.

I did however notice a clicking noise every few seconds through my speakers (all of them) when using the coax output into a marantz 5.1 amp, contacted Philips who suggested I bring it to an authorized service center to have fault investigated, I didnt bother though, just brought it back to TESCO and exchanged it for another one which seems to be working fine.

Tried hack but cant seem to do it right/quick enough to enable region free.

Steven

I can now report that the clock problem is resolved. Patch from end of November fixed it although I've only been back in the UK for the past 2 weeks to try it.

I have now seen 2 other problems.

I was watching a DVD last night and about 1hr into the DVD the recorder switched to standby. Only seen this happen once.

If I'm watching TV with the DVD recorder switched off, the recorder every so often switches itself on and then back to standby, causing the TV to switch to the DVD EXT and then back to the channel I was watching.

I have seen problems when sitting front of the DVD recorder with my laptop which caused the recorder to continuously switch on and off, but this is not the case for this problem.

Very happy in general - I've noticed the clock problem but it hasn't caused me any problems yet - updated to 29/11/04 firmware hopefully this will resolved.

Region hack DOES work on 610-05 with 29/11/04 firmware.

Recording quality is superb and generates higher quality at any specified bitrate than my semi pro video editing kit (which cost over £1000) on my PC!!

Recorded disks (both DVD+R and DVD+RW) play fine in my laptop and desktop PC.

All in all very happy considering I picked this up as a catalogue return for £80 - Ideal replacement for my old VCR.

"We have checked with our Service team who tell us that some early models did show some time anomalies but this has been remedied in the current versions. The current version of this software, along with other information on our products, is available on the Philips support website http://www.p4c.philips.com "

I dont seem to have any probs with it so far.
once i heard the fan come on but after i repositioned it i couldnt hear it.

My only prob was when backing up a vhs to dvd, macrovision(i presume) kept pausing the phillips every few minutes. ill post when i find a cure!

+ Great design. Easy to use when you get familiar with the remote and menus. High quality recordings in 2,3 and 4 hours mode. All the edit options I need. Up to 8 hours recording mode at your service if you have recently planted an axe in your VCR and are in desperate need of long play capacity. As in my case.
AND THE REGION HACK ACTUALLY WORKS!

- No digital audio input. Tiny buttons on remote control. Unfortunately the region hack does not support RPC protected discs. Still it's in deed region free.

Works fine with two types DVD-RW+ I have tried. One blank disk which came with a NEC DVD-recorder for PC use. The second one is known as Smartbuy DVD+RW 2.4x in red color on both inlay and disc surface.

Both VCD and SVCD works fine.

I've just bought this recorder from a local Comet. My main reason for choosing it was that it was advertised (by Amazon) as being multi-region capable. Amazon have the codes for a number of Phillips players on their site, but it turned out that the code was wrong. The code in the comment below is correct.
I've read about a number of quirks with this player, but so far mine seems to be fine. It is marked on the box as DVDR610/05.
Having recently come back after 4 years in the US, most of my collection is region 1, I've tested a number of discs in this player and it looks like most older discs will work. However, so far the following discs caused the player to lock up and not play:

Spirit (Dreamworks entertainment)
Brother Bear (Disney)
Haunted Mansion (Disney)

Once Upon a Time in Mexico showed a region code map with a statement that the disc was to be used in unmodified players.

So it appears that this player is not truely multi region... unless there is another code...

I bought a Philips 32" 100hz tv last weekend for £800 and this recorder (worth £200)was included for nothing.
To be honest, i'm well versed in the field of Dvd-Recorders, but i've been testing the Philips and reading comments and spec guides on other brands.
So far so good with this unit, the highest dvd recording setting produces excellent results, I think the bitrate is vbr: 2000~8000mbps (dont quote me though!).
PRO's:
It looks stylish in silver, is compact and lightweight
The connectivity is very good (scarts, comp etc)
Very high quality recording throughout the range
It identifies which channel it is receiving
The dvd+r and dvd+rw discs are readable in my pc drives (NEC3500AG dvd writer and LiteOn 166S dvd rom)
The connectivity is very good

CON's:
The remote control lacks an eject button
You can hear the fan sometimes, but thats unintrusive

There is also a multiregion hack available........

1: Turn on the 610 from the front panel, Do NOT open the disc tray
2: On the 610 Remote, press the blue button, then play then 159, then 121212005255, then play then standby.
3: Enjoy multiregion viewing!

Please note, the buttons must be pressed quickly or the hack will not work.
You should see the numbers 121212005255 on the front panel display briefly if the hack has been input correctly.

I haven't tested the hack yet but it should work by all accounts.

Thanks,

Andem.

I had/have two problems with my recorder:

1) Noisy fan and in use to often. This has been much better after upgrading to the latest firmware from Philips. According to Philips the fan was starting at temperature of 26 degrees centigrade witch of course was to early.
2) The clock is jumping forward half an hour. According to Philips they have a solution for this problem and it will be released in a new firmware before chrismas 2004. Philips also told me that this problem only occurs for Swedish users.

I have also noticed that the fan is spinning for a second or two in standby mode.

If the clock-problem is solved it is a very good dvd-recorder for the money.
