Great stuff MX.

Do you know how to transfer file from USB to the harddisk?

As it is quite annoying to go through the whole USB process.

Simon seems to have mixed his unit up with the 3455. The 3455 has no digital tuner, and I don't believe it has HDMI either.

Bought this to record over KQED HD programs I've been getting using antenna. Thought I could use it as a HD Tivo, but the picture quality is a bit disappointing.

I hook up my Panasonic TH-42PX60U and the DVDR3455H to the same antenna. The difference in picture quality is very noticable. My DVDR3455H is connected through HDMI.

Compared to that of TH-42PX60U, picture in DVDR3455H is dim, coarse, looks like images seen on SDTV. I start to question if the DVDR3455H downscale the single to DVD quality so the video can be directly burn into a DVD without conversion. After all, on the box, it does say "SDTV turner for digital reception". The HDD is 160G and in High Quality mode it can record 33hr of program. Can someone do the math to see if that is HD or DVD quality?

It could be the tuner. TH-42PX60U is an amazing plasma TV, probably the cheap tuner in the DVDR3455H can't match it. But, what good is a ATSC tuner if the quality looks DVD quality?

Clarification-

In place of "each just UNDER three hours", make that "each just under ONE hour".

Got a 3455H/37 earlier this week and made my first recordings on it last night...three hours of programming from SciFiChannel. Recorded to the hard drive at the LP setting, divided the three hours into three separate recordings, each 59 minutes and change.

Tried to check all three to move them to a DVD, and the machine said the disc couldn't take all three recordings. Three recordings at LP (3hr) setting, each just UNDER three hours, and it can't fit them on the DVD?!?

I had to remove two sets of commercials from the third recording before all three would fit on the disc. After making one DVD, tried to make a second copy on another brand of disc, and was told even the existing editing wasn't enough. I had to remove a third set of commercials before the three recordings would fit on the second disc.

After the first two recordings had been made to the first disc, it said it only had 37 minutes SP left on the DVD...should have been over 40 minutes.

Has anyone else had a problem with this model not allowing a disc's true capacity to be used?

Comments:
Just got the recorder about 8 hours ago so this is just a quick first impressions review. Plugged it in and had it filling the timeshift buffer in 5 minutes with no problem.

I've previously (about 2 1/2 years ago) tried and returned Cyberhome (poor picture quality and very frequent lockups) and Emerson (Funai)(occasional lockups) recorders, and have kept Lite On models (5005 from black friday '04 and 5105HC from black friday '05). The only other HDD recorder I've tried is an Accurian (Radio Shack rebadge of Lite On 5045 with an 80 gig Seagate drive) which I still have (but is still within the return period). Now I have to decide which HDD recorder (or both, since I got such a good price on the re-badged Lite On) to keep. (If the Lite On had a stereo tuner and MPEG 4 playback, I wouldn't even have looked at the Philips)

PROS:
Stereo tuner! This is the first unit I've seen in this price range (especially HDD models) that has an MTS (stereo) tuner. The Lite Ons generally get stereo tuners in Europe, but mono NTSC tuners. The 2 main draws that got me to try this unit against the 5045 rebadge were the stereo tuner and MPEG4/DivX playback (though the 160 gig HDD helps justify the price difference - the Lite On rebadge was a carton damage model that I got for $140).

I like having the timeshift buffer start whenever the tuner is selected. With the Lite On, you have to hit a button on the remote to start it, and the Lite On's buffer is only 3 hours vs. 6 for the Philips.

So far, picture quality seems as good as any DVD recorder I've played with so far, though I haven't really tested in depth and I've only used SP and SPP modes (the manual shows SP as the default, but after saving a buffered recording, I discovered it was SPP). That's another feature the Lite On lacks - it doesn't allow saving contents of the buffer.

So far, the MPEG 4/DivX/XviD playback is great. I've played from CD, CDRW, DVD+R and DVD+RW with no problems, and this includes some XviD files that my DVP642 pukes on (horrible pixelation, wrong colors, stalls, and hangs). The Lite On 1105HC played them, but a little grainy/pixelated. At least at first glance, the Philips plays them as well as any other file I threw at it, no abnormal pixelation or graininess (though I only watched a total of about 45 minutes out of a dozen or so 45 minute or longer files).

HDD recording should help eliminate (or at least lessen) the stacks of unmarked +RW discs on top of the player...

Single button skip 30 seconds forward or reverse.

No "warranty void if broken" sticker (though they used Torx #10 head screws to make it tougher to open).

Fairly slim design - not nearly as tall as the Lite On rebadge, though a little wider and as deep. It looks better in the stack with my DVD726 that the Lite Ons too.

S-Video in (front and rear). None of my Lite Ons has S-Video on the front panel, and the newer models don't have it at all, just composite and firewire. (Then again, the 1105HC was only $60 or $70 after rebate, it was worth that at the time for its MPEG4 playback abilities)

SPP mode gives a little extra recording time with little if any noticeable drop in picture quality.

I have it connected to a 46" Toshiba 16:9 CRT projector (2005 model). Playback of recordings in SP and SPP mode was difficult to distinguish from broadcast even on this screen (VHS, even SVHS-ET in SP mode, is very easy to tell apart from broadcast. So much for the picture quality complaint of another review - bad unit maybe?). I'm hoping to replace a VCR and the Lite On 1105HC with this unit (the VCR is primarily used as a stereo tuner for the 1105HC). I'm running out of space in the entertainment center, and inputs on the HT receiver and TV, so having a single recorder that supports +/-R, MPEG4/DivX/XviD playback, and has a stereo tuner, plus HDD recording simplified things a lot. I'll keep my Philips DVD726 in the rack for movie playback to save wear on the recorder and because it's got the fastest seek times I've seen on a DVD player - just too bad it doesn't support DivX.

CONS:
No merge title feature. On the 5045, I can use split and merge to edit out portions of a recording, though it is kludgy, it works. Maybe they'll add it with a firmware upgrade.

Trial version of YesDVD. Looks mostly useless to me, and it only allows you to use it on 3 discs before you have to buy it. This is wasted space in the firmware that could be used for useful features - LIKE A TITLE MERGE!

Cannot copy from CD/DVD to HDD. The Lite On allows this for non-copy protected media (haven't put it to the test though).

Menus are a little kludgy. Navigation on DVD playback seems very kludgy especially compared to DVD726 and DVP642, though I have only played from HDD and DVDs made on the Lite On recorders so far, and I may just need to learn my way around better. So far, I haven't found a simple time search for DVD content, but it was there for MPEG4.

ANNOYANCES: (not quite bad enough to list as cons)

No optical out. My receiver has 1 coaxial and 2 optical ins. My DVD726 is a version without optical out, but I have a couple of TOSLINK <-> Coax adapters that I got cheap figuring they'd come in handy some day - and they are.

USB feature is basically useless. Only supports flash memory (flash drive or card reader), and then only for playing jpeg, mp3, and wma files. Bad enough that HDD support isn't present, but it won't even play MPEGs from the flash drive. Whoever releases one of these units with USB HDD support for expansion for a decent price is going to have a good shot at grabbing the market.

(Not tested) Troubleshooting section of the manual says it's normal for there to be occasional "skips" in mp3 playback. Obviously their definition of normal isn't the same as mine. If this is true, I'd call the mp3 playback fatally broken and in that case, it shouldn't even be listed as a feature. But then, I bought this unit for DVD/HDD recording and MPEG4 playback, not for mp3s.

Can't mark a range of timeshift buffer to save, only a start point to end of buffer. Workaround is save, edit, split, delete, repeat split and delete if necessary.

----------------
So far, looks like a pretty decent unit. Haven't gotten a region free hack to work, but that's minor since I don't have anything other than region 0 and 1 discs anyway (it's just the principle of it - and all my other standalone DVD devices are region free).

What initially prompted me to upgrade to an HDD recorder was my GF seeing the cable co.'s ads for their digital/DVR box and wanting one for the timeshift function. They want $16 a month for that (plus whatever taxes it adds to the bill). I'd rather spend the money up front and own my equipment, plus be able to copy what I want to keep out to DVD. TIVO is no option, you buy the unit then pay $13 a month to be able to use it.

I popped the cover to see how it was built. I like the apparently replaceable fan. It is a WD 160 gig drive. I've never had a problem with WD, so I expect it to hold up. (If I'd found a Hitachi or Samsung drive, it would've gone back - I've had nothing but trouble with either of them). DVD drive is also a standard ATAPI interface, couldn't distinguish which model, but I'd expect a Philips (not up on Philips line - I use mostly NEC burners). I may get around to hooking up the drive in a PC to see what it is, and hooking up the HDD to check formatting/file system and see if it's easily upgradeable, though I think 160 is enough for me.

Comments:
I took the plunge a couple of months ago and bought one on eBay for about $220,- including shipping. At that price I'm quite happy with the purchase, but I wouldn't spend more than that on this box.
My observations (in no particular order) after about two months of use:
- picture quality is pretty good even at LP speed (3 hours of record time). I'm using an older SONY 36" XBR TV (CRT, not the newer LCD or plazma).
- I like the flexibility of SP and SPP recordings: 2 hrs 7 min, and 2 hrs 30 min. respectively.
Recording onto the HD first and having the ability to later edit and transfer to DVD is great.
- operation is whisper quiet (compared to my 'old' Sharp DVD recorder which has a very loud fan.
- operation and menus are confusing to me and don't always make sense. For example: to record a movie from HD to DVD one selects the HD function on the remote, hightlights the movie of choice, presses select and then presses HD again to record to the DVD. Follow? Press HD to record to DVD... Doesn't make sense, but hey...
- editing a movie recorded onto the HD is cumbersome and quirky. For example, selecting Edit will automatically start playing the movie, so marking the beginning of a trim at 0:00:00 is tricky. Rewinding might cause the recorder to jump back all the way to the HD menu.
Same when I need to trim, say, the last 5 minutes of a recording. The recorder doesn't pause at the end but instead it jumps back to the HD menu. It displays END for a second or two so one has to be quick with the remote in order to not miss marking the end of the trim.
- the recorder doesn't remember the last selected source. After power down-power up it always starts in Tuner mode and selects the first input source which is Antenna. To get to EXT2 (the second set of RCA inputs on the back that I have a SAT receiver connected to) I have to keep scrolling through the Antenna, CAM1 and CAM2 (the two front inputs), EXT1 and finally EXT2. I can't see why Philips coulnd't make it remember EXT2 from the last time, or why there is no way to set a default source.
- some settings, that one changes frequently are only accessible from the SETUP menu. For example, it would be great to have a dedicated button to select the recording speed. Instead this is burried in the SETUP.
- DVD media compatibility: in my opinion a hit a miss. For example: it will not record onto a TDK branded DVD-R 8x disk. It will, however, record onto an HP branded DVD+R 8x disk. It also likes the Office Depot branded DVD-R 4x disk and the Memorex DVD+R 4x disks.
Footnote: I've not seen any corellation between the rated speed of a DVD disk and the speed with which the recorder writes from the HD to the DVD. It appears constant.
- Renaming a title: there appears to be a file system limitation of 12 characters, or so. Additional characters are not allowed.
Also, there are no alphabetic keys on the remote to 'typing' a title must be done by jumping back and force an onscreen table of upper case, lower case or special characters. I find this cumbersome compared to having letters assigned to the numeric keypad on the remote (ABC to key 1, DEF to key 2, etc.)
- I've not tested functions like playing back DivX, MP3, SVCD, etc so I can't comment there.

First impressions - look
- The box is very slim and it looks very good and it matches perfect with my harman kardon receiver (black&silver theme). The plastic doesn't look that cheap, like many others on the market.
(score 8/10)

Remote control
- the layout is ok, I've seen worst, however the number buttons are very tiny. No biggy though. I like the white finish on the back of the remote. The remote is working fine in my livingroom and I had no problems with it.
(score 7/10)

I/O.
- Pretty standard, I wish it had 3 sets of inputs (2 rear and 1 front), since I had no choice to use front and rear. Since I'm using fronts i/o, it was tight to insert usb memory stick. (score 7/10)

Inside layout. (few pix included)
- good wd 160 hdd, similar to Polaroid model, looks like it can be easly upgraded :)
- everything neatly assembled
- LSI chipset
- fan looks like can be replaced if it dies one day
(score 9/10)

Feature.
- USB inputs works well with *.jpgs
- time shift/pause seem to work as expected
- right key can be used as comercial skip (I think it skips in 30seconds increments)
- the recorder adds automaticaly thumbnails to the recorded shows
- simple menus, nothing fancy, even my wife did some editing on her own while I was at work, hence it is easy enough for beginners.
- played fine couple of cds/dvds with divx movies. The only problem it had was with the *.avi names being too long, it didn't recognized the disc.
- can't wait to test firewire input with my minidv camcorder.
(score 8/10)

Recording to hdd
- used sp (2hrs) mode to record some staff to hdd, the PQ was excellent.
- modifying title, very easy. I think 12 chars is max though.
- This is why I've decided to buy dvr to record shows/movies to hdd.
(score 8/10)

Recording to dvd
- used dvd+rw 4x, it took some time to record ( i guess x4 is slow). While recording I was browsing hdd menu at the same time. The PQ was good
(not enough testing done)

Others.
- Fan and hdd operation is very quiet
- I've open region to 0 and I was able to play dvd region '2' on it . The problem is I don't remeber what was the combo of key strokes. I've tired 5 different combos.... I believe it was hack for Philips DVDR3355, posted in the hack section

Missing features.
- auto title when recording shows off sat receiver
- auto resume when watching conent off hdd, I wish it remebered where I stopped watching. Both are minor problems and I can live with them.

Final Thoughts.
So far so good, I'm very happy and satisfied with my latest purchase. Plus when I consider the money I've payed for rhis brand new unit $240US+shipping (off ebay), it was a steal. Maybe it doesn't have variable recording, component inputs, dual layer recording support and fancy menus, however it seems to do what I wanted to do in long time, ditch my VCR !!!!! Overall I would give it a solid 8/10 score and I would recommend this unit.

Overall, I am pleased with this recorder. The record quality is very good even in the lower settings. I use it with the component outputs into a 55" Mitsubishi TV. No problems recording from HBO to DVD or HDD. The only thing I am not real impressed with is the Graphical Interface is not as good as others, but I will get used to it. It is 100% better that the Toshiba DR4 that I replaced.

This DVDR with HDD does everything it says, but the picture quality is worse than either of my VCRs. I'm taking it back to Walmart tomorrow. I read a post in this forum listing the problems with all brands of DVD recoders, and this is precisely the problem everyone else had.

I have a 36" Tv, I'm using the component RCA video cables (Pr/Pb/Y), and I'm recording in the HQ-highest quality mode. All this and the video is still grainier than my VCR recording in the 4 hour SP mode.

I pretty disapointed
