Concerning Dual Layer reading... like every DVD player I've tried, it will read commercial dual layer discs. I have no idea whether they're DVD-R or DVD+R though.

I like the recorder due to its wide variety of inputs. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the main menu on burned discs is rather boring.

The recorder has all the features that I wanted. Things had gone well until one day I was recording using an erased +RW disc (erased using the recorder's erase tool) with the timer. After recording, the update message was displayed permanently and all the buttons were disabled. After 5 hours of updating, I ended up pulling the plug. After reconnecting the device, the 3390 display showed that the disc was blank and the recording seemed to be gone. Taking the disc to the PC and tried reading it with Roxio Creator 8. Creator reported that there was 1 session on it and was able to pull off an ISO image to the harddrive, but no program that I have could write the image file back onto another disc. I had used Decryter, Creator 8 without any success. Nothing on the PC could play the disc. Eventually I gave up and decided to do a quick erase with Creator 8. After the erase, I put the disc back into the 3390 and expected to see a blank disc display. However the 3390 spined and spined and took a long time to load the disc (probably around 2 or 3 minutes), but when it was done, viola, the recorded program showed up. Somehow, something got fixed along the way.

In any case, Philips has a firmware upgrade that claims to fix the update problem. I will have to give it a try.

I have tried several Philips recorders, including the 3455HD model, and my previous favorite the 3355/37. This is a better unit then the later. It is thinner, produces very little heat and has a great picture quality. Recorded movies/TV seems to be cleaned up through this player. In my location cable is somewhat grainy and I have used several other brands of DVD recorders, including the Panasonic Dmr-ES15S, which was also a good player except for the grainy picture. Paid $144 at Wal-Mart. It is now $130 at Wal-Mart. Great Deal! Has all the bells and whistles like multiple inputs, S-video in, FireWire, etc. Has a nice bright LED display and a bright Red LED circle of light that illuminates when recording, making it easy to tell at a glance what the unit is doing. It is also capable of playing both PAL and NTSC and with a command sent to the unit via the remote, can be region free.

The things that would make this recorder better:

1. Better menu system. Although it is simple to use, it does not offer the wealth of configuration options like the Panasonic models. The menus for the burned shows are simple too and could be much better. The 3400 model addresses this flaw though.

2. A better remote control. The layout is not that great and a bigger remote with easier navigation buttons, similar to the the Panasonic model would be excellent.

3. Allow more characters when editing title names, etc. I think this unit supports like 8 to 12. Just not enough. The Panasonic models allow like 64 or 128, a lot anyway. The 3400 model does fix this a bit more by allowing, I think 20 or 30 characters.

4. Optical Output. Why is Optical on DVD's going the way of the dodo? It is better then coax and my receiver has a ton of them, whereas only one coax.

Overall if you have tried the rest like I have, this or the 3400 is an awesome player and if it had just a few more features would be a 10. I have tried Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and some of the cheaper brands and this beats them hands down in quality and ease of use.

Comments:
Fast forward and fast reverse keys on the remote control do not work
when playing DivX movies.

Editing DVD+RW discs sometimes makes them incompatible with anything but
this unit.

TIMER recording will not start if the DVD RW disc has enough free space
at the beginning, so it checks for space only at the end of disc.

EDIT menu, even on accidental key press and when no edit operation is
performed, does not allow to return to movie watch. User needs to enter
to disc menu and start playing title again.

Once the unit severely corrupted the DVD+RW disc: after recording, the
unit started to update the disc and did not finish after more than an
hour. Since I could not wait, I disconnected the unit from the power and
in a minute connected it back. The disc loaded well, menu was OK, with
all expected titles, the disc played well on the recorder, but no PC
could read it any more.

The manual, datasheet and information on your site says
that the unit records DVDs which are compatible with any DVD
player. Therefore, it follows from this statement that such
DVDs must be also compatible with any software DVD players on
any PC. Unfortunately, this is not true. I record movies on
DVD+RW and then try to use PC to watch them or copy to hard
disk in order to remove commercials. I used Intervideo
WinDVD, Microsoft Media player and DVDs recorded on Philips
DVDR 3390/37 show the root menu but not always play.
Sometimes clicking on menu does nothing. Nevertheless, same
DVDs play well on Linux system with MPlayer and Xine. Copying
only works reliably with free program DVD Decrypter. I do not

Does not play VideoCD 2.0

Does not play DivX movies from files with Russian names (shows a
message: This movie format is not supported). Renaming the movie file
with all latin letters makes the file compatible with this unit.

Very easy to use menus, I didn't even have to read the manual and I'm already using it. Very nice player and recorder.
