CVD? $250 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: A bit expensive at the time i bought it (august of 2002), but otherwise it works flawlessly. Highly recommended if the price is not too high. Has so far played everything i've put in it except MP3.

All files are compressed into .zip archives. Follow the instructions carefully, and remember that you perform the update at your own risk! Instructions: You need to burn a CD-R in Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660 which contains the files "xxxxxxxx.xxx" and DOWNLOAD.xxx" only (where xxx and xxxxxxxx.xxx are numbers which represent the version and revision of the firmware and which vary depending on the firmware version you download). For best results, burn at 1x speed. Also, you must ensure that you finalize (or 'fix') the CD-R. Once you have done this; 1 Switch on the player and wait for initialising to complete 2 The display will read 'No Disc'. 3 Open the drawer, insert the disc and close the drawer. Do not press 'Play'. 4 The new firmware will load automatically and, when completed, the drawer will open once again. 5 Remove the disc and close the drawer by pushing gently on the front edge. Do not use the 'Close' button. 6 Switch off the power and then switch on again. Reprogramming is now complete. Note: Philips manufactured and shipped a large amount of their players with a PROM rather than a FlashMEM IC. On these players, it is impossible to flash-upgrade the firmware from a CD-R. Should you continue to get errors while trying to upgrade the firmware in your player, and you're absolutely certain that you have followed the instructions correctly, then you may have one of these players. You will need to telephone your local Philips Technical Support desk (see the player's manual) to have it upgraded.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Just responding to the previous post about the possibility to play SVCD's. According to the manual the DVD957 does not support SVCD. I downloaded and installed the 8.11 firmware. The player is now capable of playing SVCD's with MPEG2 material.

Minor: player's a little bit noisy at start-up of a DVD. Plays no MP3, if you try to play an MP3 disc, it starts counting in the display, but there's no sound to be heard.

CVD? $350 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: This dvd-player plays VCD, SVCD, XVCD and XSVCD. Note that VCD and XVCD have a maximum bitrate of 1150 kbps videobitrate and 224 kbps audiobitrate. SVCD and XSVCD have a total maximum bitrate of 2600 kbps. I made a XSVCD of 2408 videobitrate and 192 audiobitrate and the dvd-player played it in very good quality! The advantage of XSVCD is the movieformat 720x576 which is larger than the standard SVCD-format. To create an XSVCD you have to make the Mpeg-files in for example TmpegEnc and then burn these files in Nero as an non-compliant SVCD. I tried to play some MP3-files as well, but the dvd-player didn't play them.

Plays VCD very good with its Playback control. Playback control its not working for SVCD. When inserting it the Philips says so. Plays all kind of CDR and CDRW discs. CD-r disc of even 4-5 years ago, from brand to unknown cheap discs I bought this DVD because it has Both dd 5.1 and DTS decoders onboard
