Now I know why B&O, Grundig and Bose are shopping at Philips for their DVD-stuff. used very very intensively by the whole family (Bob The Builder is doing overtime over here!) I also own a CD582 (from the late 80's) and that player just keeps on going! Many thanks to the people in Hasselt who made these machines!

I just tried today with SVCD-MPEG and true DVB-MPEG authored with ReJig and DVDshrink 3.1.7, and although I did not expect this, it worked well! Because it cannot play SVCD (with the build in firmware). It's about 4 years and really often used, and it's still my best player. When I need MP3 or things like that I use another player.

CVD? $450 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Cannot play CD-RW discs. I tried to read a burned Audio CD in a CDRW (Dysan high Speed Rewritable CD /Nero written at 4x speed) but unfortunately no response. After a minute the disk ejects from the player. Playing VCD (Dysan CDR / Nero written at 4x speed) i can see some picture distortion in several scenes even in the menu.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Nice looking player. Headphone jack is nice. Major gripe: the player only supports +RW media. I played an Intenso +RW disc burnt with DVD Decrypter, DVD2One and IMGTool. Worked OK. Philips can modify the player to accept all recordable media. Here in Germany they charge an arm and a leg for it- €125. Pity that there is no software available via Internet to enable +R/-R/-RW media

N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD JPG/JPEG DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: The support for DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD-RW is obtained via an upgrade to the ROM SERVO (which can be done in a philips support center for 80,00 EUR). This player supports SVCD after activating the P-CODE 55 (by means of RC6 055 000 000 000 PLAY) for PAL players. The multiregion support is also by hack (RC6 222 222 005 255 PLAY). The SVCD FF/REW support works just fine with firmware 7.26. After all the changes and updates, it supports everything, has a good and steady looking, good construction and some special funcionalities like color adjusting and pre-selection for RGB connections. A very good player, for 1999 model.

N/A 7 of 10 Comments: At first it played only VCD/DVD. After upgrading the firmware tov 7.22 it played SVD too. Now I upgraded to f/w 7.26 to see if this thing plays DVD-r, but without even testing this feature it seems that it wo'n't play my SVCD's anymore. HELP .....anyone ?

N/A 8 of 10 DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG DivX MPEGISO Comments: Not a very good choice for a CD player because it makes a little too much noise (for my taste anyway). SVCD works with firmware 7.22, upgrading to 8.11 removes this feature. Sure there is the play 159 (and something) hack you can use to get it back, but afaik it cripples some outputs of the player (iirc svideo, but everyone's using RGB scart anyway so it doesn't matter :-). I'd rather not use it because I just might need full functionality later and nobody posted a way to remove the hack. So think before you do it. Standard VCD (1.15M,224k stereo) plays perfectly from cd-r and rw but it stalls every 10 seconds or so even if you just lower the audio bitrate. Just don't do it :) SVCD works with mono audio tracks 96-192kbps, 224kbps does not. Didn't test higher. 96kbps mono seems to have a slight sync problem, but it goes away after you press pause and then play. Joint-stereo 192kbps and 224kbps work perfectly. Haven't tested others. SVCD specs say maximum bitrate is 2600kbps but I have had video at 2500kbps and a mono audio track of 192kbps and I didn't see a problem. Haven't had a chance to test how far it would really go. Used mjpegtools(mpeg2enc), tmpgenc and cce sp for mpeg1/2 encoding. Toolame and mjpegtools(mp2enc) for mpeg1 layer2 audio encoding. Mjpegtools(mplex) for multiplexing the video and audio streams. Vcdimager for authoring and finally cdrdao for burning the image. For SVCD the FF and REW doesn't work with any combination I've tried. It simply stops playing the disc if I try. Someone suggested this is related to the track size (under 10 minutes works, over not). With VCD there is no such problem. Not really a bad player in my opinion. Remote to remove region restrictions and upgradeable firmware for more features. And there's that neat little DD5.1 decoder built-in too.

N/A 7 of 10 Comments: So I'm now with firmware 8.11 Support of SVCD has been improved. The player dont locks anymore. Sometimes the video freezes apparently due to subtitles (SVCD without subtitles never freezes) but it starts back by itself FF and FR still not working with SVCD's I tested XVCD and XSVCD and sound or video are bad played... so don't work fine. XSVCD works but just with a larger resolution and not with higher bit rate (i.e: PAL 704x576 @2.5kb) SVCD subtitles work but sometime freeze on the screen; Also FF and REW do not work in SVCD with a lenght of more than 40 mins - also in this case, playing time is not shown correctly (firmware bug!). I never had system locks as someone else said. One of the best choice if you wish to use SVCD: price is somehow high, but it's out of catalog now and you may go for a cheap used one...; also look for DVD75x (just some feature less, but the same firmware) and DVD95x (exactly the same inside, just the color is different).

Firmware update 7.22 enables SVCD playback. Do not upgrade to 8.11 or this feature will be disabled again.

N/A No rating Comments: Can play VCD with higher res, such as 352X576 Howver as it stalls after a few seconds with a higher bit rate, so that is not much good at 1150kbs as it more blocky than a brick wall :-/ Can handle lower audio bit rates.
