Reads Verbatim DVD+R DL when burned at 2.4X. If burned at 4X it will produce "skips" when playing back the video. However, even at 2.4X it will "skip" at layer change. Don't know how to get around this yet. Also have problems with menus, sometimes will lock up. Ripped using DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 (ISO read mode) and burned image with Nero 6.6.0.3 to a Sony DRU-710A. If there's a better method, I'm all ears.

Works great, plays everything I've thrown @ it. Did have to return it to Best Buy, as the tray came off track, but other than that, have had no probs. Definitely a good buy if you can still get your hands on one of these. Last I seen it was around $79 clearance.

Bought this player as a "Floor Model" from Best Buy for 75$ It had no manual, but realy how complicated can a DVD player be? After researching the model to see if it would play XVCDs, I was simply floored. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the deal I got. It's palyed every media brand I've thrown in it, and just about every format I've tossed at it as well.

It's true DVD+/-RWs do skip a bit, but I only experience that if I Burned them faster than 2x. But i rarely use RWs any way, so burning them slower is not a big deal realy. The Lack of a shuffle feature for MP3 Playback is also a bit of a let down, but it's not a deal breaker, it just means I get to do the shuffling before I burn the Disc! I haven't had the chance to test DVD MP3 discs yet, but what would I do with 5 DVD's worth of MP3s?

The Region Hack worked for me as well. Though here in the States it can be tricky to get any DVDs besides R1.

All things considers a Great buy, especialy at the prices they fetch now.

This is a FANTASTIC machine!!

It will play PAL and NTSC VCDs as well as PAL and NTSC SVCDs. I have a couple SVCDs with 2 seperate audio tracks and it will play whichever you select. I have one SVCD disc with subtitles on it and those correctly switched on and off useing the "subtitle" button on the remote. I now understand that there are 2 types of subtitles, but I am not sure which type that disc has on it.

Anything I've tried to play has worked flawlessly as far as VCDs and SVCDs go.

I have played a bunch of different brands of DVD-R discs in it with no problems. They came from different people who burned them with different software adn different burners - no problems encountered at all.

I have not tried to play any DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW discs in it so I can't say anything about those.

It has progressive scan, component color connectors, and the digital audio out connector for a full home theatre surround sound system.

If all you are interested in is flawless VCD/SVCD and DVD-R playing - then get this player. Don't take a chance on anything else.

This is a great player for DVDs and music. I also have not had any problems playing SVCDs or VCDs on CD-R that were burned with Nero 5.5.

It skips frequently with both DVD-R and DVD+R media. Some things work fine in parts while skipping a lot in other sections. Some disks that work fine in my computer or an Apex AD-1100 will not even load. This is very disappointing.

I have used Fuji, TDK, and Verbatim DVD media.

The load time and and actual disc start is slow but a great player and has played all that i have thrown in it from a collection of many vcd and svcd movies.I bought this player about 2 weeks ago and YES it plays svcd's i don't know why people have said it doesn't i tested several svcd's some to spec some out spec, vcd header trick they all played fine.I saw a post that said this won't play mp3's,yes it does. The manual states cbr 128 for mp3,i don't even think the test disc i used was cbr. That person should try a disc written as a data cd if they are going to use adaptec NOT direct cd as stated in their post.Xvcd was tested at cbr 2500 but haven't tried anything higher.I haven't had time to test Xsvcd.

It's not a very bad thing. I don't want to waste your time advertising all good sides. I'd better warn you about a couple of problems I have with my unit.

1. It freezes while playing SVCD with a selected subtitle. I have many SVCDs created by DVD2SVCD with the CCE encoder. No non-standard features. I had no problems playing them on APEX-AD703. Philips 793C can play them flawlessly only when I switch off SVCD subtitles.

2. I noticed that the player skips some parts of videos recorded on DVD+R(W). The length of the fragment skipped could be different up to 2 minutes. I noticed that consistently using FUJI and Optimum DVD+R and Sony DVD+RW media. I didn't try any other DVD+R media. However, the problem never happened on Apex AD703. It never happens if I copy a DVD+R disk to a DVD-R.
If somebody by any chance has an idea why the player doesn't like DVD+R I'd appreciate if you share.

When I bought this player the salesman said it would play VCDs and SVCDs on CD-R and CD-RW. Despite what he and most everyone else on this list (except for one or two people) say it will not play VCD or SVCD recorded on CD-R or CD-RW. The manual (pg. 21) even says that it supports only MP3 on CDR and CDRW. I used TMPGenc to convert my avi files to mpg1 and mpg2, then burned them onto an IBM 700 MB 80 min CD-R using Adaptec direct CD wizard and finished the disc so it could be read by any CD Rom. When I put the disk in the player it says "no MP3 file". The same disk plays fine on my computer CD player.

It does play audio MP3s burned onto CD-Rs very well and also DVDs.

What can I say this is a great player. I have a 53" Hitachi wide screen HDTV television. It displays up to 540p or 1080i.

Several years ago I first viewed a DVD (the matrix might I add, great way to start =P) on a creative 2x on my computer such a dramatic difference over VHS but the small screen or the running of 50 feet of cable to my television downstairs was a bit annoying. After about a year I got a Playstation 2 (currently non-progressive scan) somewhat less quality but far easier to have on a larger screen vs. a computer monitor. After about 6 months I upgraded from standard cables to monster cables. I always though they were just selling a name but after seeing such a dramatic difference in games and movies I'll never make that mistake again. The increase in colors when watching Episode I and the definition to characters while playing Final Fantasy 10 was startling. This is getting a bit away from the player at hand but I just wanted to give some background so you would know that I am not just starting out here and that “oh this is the best player in the world” (sarcasm). Why do you say this sir? Oh just because. (Further sarcasm)

Now comes the Philips 793C. I looked all over town at DVD players because I wanted to have the ability to just return something local if some problem occurred vs. fighting some Internet company. The only players I found locally that played Scud’s were some Apex's and this Philips. I would have preferred to pay $70 for an apex (or so I thought) but this Philips was the only one I found that was progressive scan and the 5-disc changer made it all the more sweet.

I was originally hoping to purchase a capture card and record stuff onto my computer and then transfer to a disc as a SVCD. I purchased an ATI 8500 all in wonder 128mb it was a fun adventure and many people from both ATI and Philips. ATI said that the card didn’t make standard svcd's thought the web site and packaging seemed to lead one otherwise. Philips stated that it plays cd-r and svcd in the paper work but what they were inferring is that it plays professional svcd's no homemade ones. Ackkk. Anyways. If you make a custom record setting and set the bit rate a 2.52 megs you can get a svcd that works standard 90% of the time and for those that don’t or just for good measure you can remux it in Tmpgenc to standardize it for recording. You can also use Nero with the SVCD plug into standardize it.

I have not widely tried SVCD’S on other DVD players but a full quality (2520) played on this player versus a DVD is hardly noticeable in most instances. In areas of major detail and complexity like a wicker basket or a tree with a million leaves or a real fast moving camera view can make the picture a little less than perfect. When I say this I mean only a little bit hardly noticeable not some messy blur. Keep in mind though there are a million factors here. Original source, TV displays, conversion, etc.

When using this player (with monster cables) compared side by side to a Playstation 2 (with monster cables) I noticed a dramatic difference in the quality of the playback as well as a bit better color over the PS2.

Sadly I have not yet acquired a 5.1 or above receiver (prologic 100x1, 50x2, 20x2) so I cannot attest to the quality of the sound. From what I can hear it appears to play sound quite well

The controller is not overly special but not terrible either. 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 100x, disc skip, frame by frame, zoom up to 6x, all the standard DVD stuff. Not an all in one but then most DVD remotes are not meant to be.

Some of the oddities are that from about the time you press close tray to the time that a disc actually starts to play is around 15-20 seconds. Not a terribly long time per say but a slight annoyance and the single reason for a 9/10 instead of the full 10.

Another oddity is that about every other day it seems to just turn itself on out of nowhere. I can be just sitting there with the DVD remote on top of the TV and all of a sudden it will turn on for no reason. Bleh. No harm no foul just weird.

I was happy to get this player at $188 with all these features and now with its new lower price its pretty much a steal.

If you need a player for WMA or one that is ready at the snap of your fingers you may wish to keep looking. This is the only real shortcoming of this player I have come across and it’s not really much of one. I hope this perspective helps someone when considering this player.

DVD playbak is fine, but this unit jams up all the time. The disk gets stuck and the drawer won't open. You must then take the lid off and figure out a way to get the stuck disk un-jammed and out of the unit at great risk of damaging the DVD.

I think I paid about $150 for this unit in Summer of 2002. It's out of warranty and is not worth the aggravation of sending it back to the manufacturer. I'm trashing this and going out and buying a Sony.

I also think the audio quality on both dvd and cd is poor.

Got this after fed up with Panasonic RV31K, which is a great DVD player but could never truly play SVCDs and was kind of finicky when it came to MP3s. So far the Philips has been great, played everything I've thrown into it, definitely a step up from the Panasonic in flexibility. Picture quality seems about the same, I don't have a TV that is prog scan capable yet. I love having the multi-disc capability, particularly for music and definitely like being able to see MP3 titles, even if only short versions.

The only drawback is that it does take a while for the machine to read discs, particularly MP3 discs, longer than I was expecting. Not that big a deal, though.

Highly recommended. I got an open box at BestBuy for $109, when I got home it didn't work so I took it back and they ended up giving me a brand new one for the open box price. Great deal, needless to say.

Finally, I got the one that plays all the SVCDs that I make. I really wanted to make backups for all my DVDs (I have small kids), but my Panasonic RV31 only played VCDs....and I was not sattisfied with the quality. I read a bunch of reviews on this site concerning DVD players....and Philips DVD 793C looked like the best deal without putting you in a "poor house" :) Well, I went out yesterday and bought it at BestBuy for $129.99 ...Hooking up was a breeze (for video I used component video hookup) - man, what a sweet picture! And the sound, too. Some people on this board complained about the remote. It works just fine for me...some of us just need to read the manual. (manuals is my favorite read!) I didn't give it a 10 for one reason - media reading times could be better...

I was looking for a player that would play a multitude of formats, specifically SVCD. This is one of the few that supports this format out of the box.

Spoke with Panasonic and they don't support it on their models at all, although some folks here say it will work. I much rather have a unit that I know will work 100%.

Excellent picture quality, and great sound.

Only complaints really would be the remote is WAY To Small and hard to use, and there is no way to Shuffle the MP3 files like you can with a CDR. Too bad that would be great to randomize a whole disk of MP3's.

I paid 249 Canadian.

Just bought this at Best Buy for 134.99. Have a JVC XV-F85GD which offered picture control for the different formats but wouldn't play a DVD-R to save it's life. This player has playeed them all with better quality on my Panny 47" HD widescreen. Even the sound seems better. There is a Region hack but I haven't tried it yet. All my SVCDs are at standard bitrates so I don't expect any issues.

So far I'm not entirely sure what to say about this machine. It plays dvd's very well, and it seems to like 1.0 and 2.0 VCD's well enough. But despite everyone else having had good luck with SVCDs, I am having pretty CRAPPY luck with them. I've created two of them now and it skips for the first 60-120 seconds, pausing between skips for up to a second before starting to play correctly. And the playback quality is crap. But ONLY on SVCDs. I was hoping to dump a bunch of stuff from my TiVO to SVCD (which is the main reason I got this player... the SVCD playback) and it appears to have let me down. :(

I tried out this player and found that on both VCDs and SVCDs that the audio would get broken up at times and that there was an ocasional background noise when playing these discs. Note that it did not happen on all discs and the problem appeared to be somewhat random. I suspect I may have just gotten a bad player possibly. However, the remote response is really slow! I didn't think it would bother me but it really did. I took this player back and got a Sony 655 -- so far the sony plays everything fine!

I traded in my APEX AD-1500. Apex is exactly what people say it is. Not excellent but it'll play everything. Well this player is the best of both worlds. It has excellent quality and will play anything!

I tested SVCD and VCDs burned on CD-Rs. Both performed flawlessly. People have commented that you cannot scan forward through a VCD, this is untrue. I did notice that I had to turn off PBC before it would scan. It works with 2x-4x-8x modes by holding down the >>| button.

I tested the progressive scan (which I'm new to) right next to my PS2 dvd player (no P-scan). I used component output to my tv (HDTV) in both instances. Although I could tell the difference it was pretty slight. I will have to say though that both perform better in picture quality than the Apex. Overall DVD quality is excellent as to be expected.

Highly recommended player so far, the only reason it didn't get a 10 is from what other people have already mentioned. It's not real fast with loading, but considering the processing it most likely has to do it's really not bad..

MP3 play back is awesome the random feature is great. I have tested all of my svcds with no problems, even burnt some svcds from my mini dv camcorder with pinnacle systems, all working great! I would have given this unit a 10 but it caused me a lot of aggravation in the first 5hrs of ownership! :( I would recommend this unit to anyone, BUT please purchase the EXTENDED warrantee with it !!!!!!!

Excellent Player. I have four stand-alones, and this one is tied for the best picture quality in all modes (SVCD, VCD, DVD, and DVDR). My other players are Panasonic A120, Panasonic RV30, and Pioneer 353. My other top player is the "outdated" RV30 for DVD quality. I have tested and am currently using DVD-R. I have used Memorex, Ritex, Optidisk, and Princo DVD-R. I have also used Sony DVD+RW and they have all worked flawlessly for DVD-Video. I have a feeling that just about all media will work as long as it is burned correctly. (check the forum on how to do this). However, I have even burned some of these disk incorrectly, and it has always played. (Some settings were incorrect that would cause problems on other stand-alones).

CD-R media with audio, mp3(no folders), VCD, SVCD, CVD

Plays everything. I have personally tested...

Optimum
Verbatim
Memorex
Philips
Memorex CD/RW
Hi-Tech

This thing even plays the 99/90 min CDR's

Wonderful Player!

Now some things to be aware of.
SVCD MUST stay within the specs. Anything over 2700 Kb/s (Video + Audio)will cause the audio from the player to "squawk" at certain spots. I noticed it when using DVD2SVCD and the max was set above 2756. Only at spots, but when I lowered it to below 2700, all was good. I never saw an advantage setting the max to 3000 anyway (just my 2 cents).

The fast forward and rewind buttons suck. Yes, you do have to hold the skip buttons down to scan backward/forward (like previously mentioned). I have no idea why Philips did this. I also have had no luck with slow motion.

The key pad does not work in DVD mode for chapter selection, unless you go to the on-screen menu, then go to chapters, THEN press the keypad. However the keypad will work in SVCD mode "on the fly". (odd!!) The time works. Which is great for SVCD mode, as well as all the extras...like chapter advance, keypad chapter selection, fastforward/rewind up to 8x. However, the time is a little slow compared to real time. A two hour movie shows up as only 1 hr. 33 min. Selectable subtitles work half the time when using DVD2SVCD for SVCD's. About every other line is displayed, which is odd. So I would have to say, "It does not work for subtitles." but then again, what player does. (Ofcourse it works for DVD).

The changer is a little slow, but I don't have anything to compare it to, so it might be the fastest one of all :).

Overall, Fantastic player. The cons always take longer to write then the pros, so it looks like there are a lot of little things that aren't perfect. However, after weeks of research, I have found this to be the best changer currently available.
Bottom line... Stay within specs. and it plays everything flawlessly. If you have a library of XSVCD. Look elsewere, but there is litte reason to create an XSVCD unless you want less then 40 min./disc.

I hope this helped those of you looking for a Changer. It is the best.

Did I mention that it is also a Progressive scan player :)

This player has a very good quality component video output. I have tried it with several homemade VCDs and SVCDs.
Used some cheap blank CD and CD-RW from Fry's (type GQ). All worked great. I also like the 5-disk capability -- I don't have to get up to change to the next disk.
Only annoying problem: The DVD turns ON when I use the Jog/Shtl of my VCR's remote control (Philips VCR1010). DVD also turns ON when turn on my TV (Philips 34PW9817) using TV's remote. You think the DVD would not respond to other Philips remote codes? Any one else seen this behavior?

This is THE player to get if you want to watch VCD, SVCD or DVD's made with DVD-R. So far it has played all SVCD's and VCD's with amazing sound and video quality.
I was so excited about it that I tried to run a divx avi in it and found that it tried to read it as a MP3 disk. Oh well, I didn't think that part would work anyway.
It DOES fast forward up to 8 times in VCD and SVCD mode, you just have to hold the FF button down. It explained that in the directions.
I like this MUCH better than the Apex 1500. This has a much higher quality feel to it. (quieter, more solid mechanism, etc...) It plays vcd and svcd better than my Apex and the remote works very well (unlike the apex).

This is a nice Progressive Scan player. I chose it because of the 5 disc capacity. PLays everything I put in it so far, BUT did learn something interesting. DVD-R and DVD+R discs I put labels on would start to crash at various locations on the disc. If no labels were put on it played perfectly. It didn't seem to mind DVD+RW's with labels. I guess the dye color has something to do with that.
DON'T put labels on DVD's. I think some players lasers get lost if they see the label.

I brought one of these home last night and was very bummed out to find that it DOES NOT SUPPORT TIME SEARCH ON VCDs. It has a time-search feature, but it doesn't work with VCDs (it even says so in the manual).

That's a deal-breaker for me. I'm going to return it and try a Samsung DVDC621 instead.
