I never hacked it to play any region than 2. However that's my opinions: + Plays DVD+-R/W like: Reset(but don't buy this media, it's very very bad!), Ritek G04, Mirror +R, Verbatim +R and -R, Philips +RW. Every disc was burned using a Pioneer DVR106. + No video/audio skipping when playing original DVDs - No Mp3 Long filenames, no ID3 Tag - Jpeg always distorted on the right of the screen - PAL titles(I don't know what happen with NTSC) always do Panscan and no difference if I select 4:3 with letterboxing. With every DVD I played, this player always cut the image like it's doing panscan. - Italian Menu had 4:3 Letterbox and 4:3 Panscan inverted, but even in the english menu these functions doesn't make any difference. - It's impossible to upgrade the firmware because Philips Web Syndicate it's now closed and password protected. - The Player locked only 2 times: with Blues Brothers region 2 while watching the movie and with a self-authored DVD while exploring the menu. - RC have a strange design and the buttons are placed very bad. Definitively: It's a good player because it doesn't need bitsetting while playing DVD-R/W or DVD+R/W, but when I create my own DVD with many titles into, I cannot use the maximum menu size to place buttons!!! Damn forced panscan and damn Philips support!!

I just got the 733K, they had it out to clear ($180 Aussie) and every other brand has a 1 yr warranty. Philips has a 3 yr warranty. Considering the Sub $200 bracket is flooded with no-name and bottom end brand players without 5.1, having a 3 yr warranty is somewhat re-assuring (and I was informed that Philips do a straight swap, not a repair job). This player had all the fruit. Yes I agree that no Random on the MP3 is a bit of a bummer, but that is my only gripe. Apart from that, it's a smoking deal. Oh and the regional hack to play any region (provided in box) for 733k, 736k, 616k is: Open tray Enter 1111 on the remote Press 0 on the remote Close tray

And is not noise, picture qualitie excelent and not expencive , compatibilitie ok with everything tested until now, the only thing that is not very good is not beeing able to browse mp3 wille plaing. in resume excelent.....

N/A No rating Comments: This is an update to the below earlier post. I took the first Philips back and got another one and this new one was worse!! It skipped better than Buffalo Girls!! I took it back and got a Pioneer 555 instead.

CVD? $200 N/A 6 of 10 Comments: So far had this player 2 days and it has played all the formats that I have tried and will play DTS-ES 6.1 no probs. However, it skips several times through an original DVD movie. This did it straight out of the box first movie I played and on some movies it is quite bad. So I am taking it back. This is a shame as it plays so many formats. Strange that is it plays the DVD+/-RWs better than the originals. Go figure.

CVD? $200 N/A 3 of 10 JPG/JPEG DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I used to love products from Philips but with these DVD players like this model 733 they have lowered the quality way too much for my taste. This DVD player itself is ok, with wonderful compatibility with all kind of formats. But it does NOT support LONG FILENAMES as some people has said here, it does NOT do that, only views the first 11 characters of a file- foldername. It is NOT possible to browse around on a MP3 CD while listening on a song, you must first press stop and then browse, thats cheap technology solution. The subtitle text for example DVD movies was in a very bad text typeface, too sharp for the eye and compressed. The DVD movie quality was ok if you like sharp quality, but I self prefer soft quality which is more relaxing for the eye. I compared it with a SONY DVP-NS310 and the Sony have a wonderful subtitle text and perfect soft movie quality without being bad. It is good that this DVD player also supports DVD MP3, but its a hell to know which song is which when it only shows the 11 first characters in the filename. And one last comment, its remote control is in a very bad quality. But as last word, if you wanna have a lot of functions, compatibility with all kind of formats and doesn't care about way too sharp image and text quality then buy this one, but for myself its a bad purchase.

Falls jemand eine -RW zu laufen gebracht hatt bitte mal hier einen Tip abgeben wie und womit gebrannt. My English is bad but i tray it too in English. The Player is very good for all except it does not play DVD-RW by me. If someone had a DVD-RW becom playing please write here how does it go and witch Burnningprog is needed.

It accepted every single disc I gave it so far : VCD, SVCD, MPG (mpeg-1 files on a cd-r), JPG, MP3, DVD-R. Despite what previous users commented, it DOES read DVD-MP3 : I burnt a DVD-R (no brand) with >4GB of mp3 and it plays fine (I haven't tried, but I assume it would work too with a DVD-R filled with mpeg or jpeg files). I only once had a problem while playing a dvd (freeze), but it was OK after I cleaned it. The only thing it really lacks IMO is a random function for mp3 playing.

CVD? $200 N/A 4 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: good picture and sound, lots of features BUT: haven´t seen any film, where picture didn't freeze once to five times including sound interruption. dvds are allright (bought), work well with other players. thought, it was just a mistake with the first dvd 733 i bought, so I got a second one. now, the second one does the same. now, I give it up and cancel the whole deal. i have to chose another player now. let's see... P.S.: a shopping assistant in a megastore told me, philips has got problems with this modell as it built in computer dvd drives (which are of minor quality than the ones a normal dvd player needs). maybe that´s the mistake. DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE, UNLESS YOU DON'T MIND INTERRUPTS WHILE WATCHING FILMS!!!

I make my XSVCD with TMPGEnc, TSCV authoring, burn them with Fireburner. The player shows jpg pictures and previews slowly. Smart menu isn't nice. Sometimes the DVD freezes when I brow in the DVD's menu. (the help: power off-on)

Jpeg file plays well with very good image quality, and also with zoom/pan/rotate from remote control. Also .mpg files plays without great problems. Try this: -open tray (with long press on key 1 on RC) -press key 'display' on RC you obtain model number,firmware revision and other characters on two line at top of TV screen. The reported model on my DVD is 'DVD 640/634' !!!!! There are others number but I don't know the exact meanings. I have tried hidden RC sequences that starts with 0000; there are other hidden function besides 0000-0 and 0000-angle? Great device!
