it plays good picture quality especially when using the fuction to reduce the image. However, when i play my dvd-r discs recorded by my panasonic dvd-recorder and my pioneer dvd-recorder, the pictures were found shaken/skipped in every 30 seconds during playback.
this does not happen in my other players-sony and toshiba. |

This is a follow up.
Great dvd player that plays cd-r/rw, jpg's, (s)vcd, pal/ntsc, svcd headers and more(haven't tried yet). Anyways I got it for $90CAD taxes in which was GREAT!!!
I just wanted to say it was well worth it
but does anyone know if it'll play DL DVD's? |

The only problem I have had is playing slide shows with audio. The photos are jpg files and the audio is MP3. The audio breaks each time a slide changes. It continues where it was in the song, it just stops while the photo is changed.
Other than than that the player works great. I had a couple of DVD's that would not play in my JCV player that this thing has no problems with.
I also it has an OFF light. I cannot understand the purpose of an OFF light. |

| Bought the player to replace my JVC-XV521. Needed a player that would play Pal and Svcd. This player did the trick, and not bad for $91.00 CDN. I tried several Dvd backup discs both -r and +r(Memorex) and they both played without any problems(loads quite quickly too). Tried a couple of vcd s-vcd and they played also without any problems. I would definately recommend this player to anyone. |

| I bought this player for $49.95 on sale to take the place of an expensive Samsung DVD/VCR combo that was supposed to play everything. I have been backing up movies on dvd-r and dvd+r TDK media using DVDdecrypter and DVDshrink which burns with nero6 on a Liteon 851s. I have also used this to view movies that have been burnt with other unknown media and programs. This player plays everything I have put in it with absolutely no problems. I used this site to research before I bought this player. Thanks to this website I got one hell of a deal with this player! |

Since I found a great deal of help about that DVD player on this site, here is my contribution to the review of this unit:
My review does not includes all aspects of what this reader can do (CD-DA, CD-RW, MP3, etc.) but rather the specific use I wanted to make out of it. I bought this player to play recordable DVDs.
I presently own a Shinco AXX and a Norcent DP-300. They were barely making the job at reading commercial DVDs (they don't read recordables).
I am now in the third week of testing the 725 and I bought a second unit right after the first week.
Before buying in that range of a player, I was a bit sceptical about what this unit could really do. I realize now that I had much lower expectations that what I really end up getting for the money.
Pros : accepted all formats presented (except WMAs), it has a slim design, also has a (minimal) built in display wich is rare for units of that price range, it is silent and swift, also read « unbranded » DVDs -. The picture and sound quality is a LOT better that the above units.
Cons : The Ifrared beam window acceptance is narrow which means that you have to be straight in front of the unit to properly have control with the remote.
The unit does not play WMAs.
There is no “>|” and “ |<” on the unit’s front panel (only play, pause, stop).
And yes, the remote control is a bit crappy (so it is the one for the Shinco and Norcent) – but for God sake, it’s only $80 CAN, give Philips a break!
In conclusion : Whoever is expecting more from a DVD/+/-/RW of $79 CAN…is a unrealistic dreamer.
It is nice looking, it’s doing the job, and cheap.
I will find out about its reliability in a few months.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dear Fellows, keep posting your reviews on all models because it’s a jungle out there! Let’s not leave the manufacturers guiding what features WE need.
Only the end users have the final word on what meets our expectations.
Cheers,
- Marco the Big Eyes

Unit looks nice and slim. Powered it up and played most of my media. All is well for about an hour then screen blanked out.
Powered off and powered back on, nothing but 'hello' on the DVD display. Can't even eject my disc. Unplugged and plugged back in, nothing. Same 'hello'
I hope I just got a bad unit and the others aren't like this. I am will be requesting a replacement unit tomorrow.. hope this one will work. |

I mainly use DVD+R Memorex 4x, DVD+RW Memorex 4x,
CD-R Memorex 80 min 48x Black. For authoring & burning for VCD I use VCDEasy,TMPGenc, DVD2AVI, & Smartripper. For DVD I use DVD Shrink & Nero.
I have made MP3 DVDs with 1,047 songs 60 Main Folders 72 Subfolders, and can play all of them on the Philips 727.The only problem noted was when I wanted to play the next song I had to press stop B4 going to it. If I pressed the skip
>> button, the unit would freeze and I would have to pull the plug to clear it.Other than that, I could find no faults worth mentioning! |

Very nice DVD player I bought yesterday to replace my really crap Dual DVD-118.
My only gripe is that when listening to a normal CD-DA one must first change the digital output to PCM ONLY instead of ALL (and vice-versa when watching a DVD).
Apart from that, I'm satisfied. My VCDs and CVDs also work great. |

This Player does not have hard control knobs(rear or front) to toggle progressive scan ON/OFF as model 724(front).
The progressive scan mode needs to set up through
the menu system,by default it is OFF. Plugging this Player to my Philips HDTV input(AV4) which has progressive scan mode only this Player does not work since it is on NON progressive mode by default,at the same time also the menu system display can not be shown. The menu system display shown only if I plug this Player through regular(non progressive) input ,then I change the mode PROGRESSIVE scan ON through this display. But
since it connects to REGULAR non PROGRESSIVE input, this function turns back to OFF matching to tthe input.
This unit in my case can only use in NON progressive mode by plugging in the NON progressive mode input.
Anybody khnows how to toggle the progressive scan on without the system menu display shown?Any key number through the remote control?Or in case loss the remote control....?

| I bought this play in January. It was a great player and good quality. It was also great to be able to play both NTSC and PAL DVDs. Progressive scan was good too. Well, that is when it's working. After using it for less than 2 months, it stopped working. It wouldn't turn on even though the standy-by light is on. I would have to unplug it and plug it back in again. When it does power on, and I start the movie, it would freeze after about 5 minutes. Sometimes it wouldn't even load. I called customer service and the guy wasn't very helpful. He told me to try it, and it just happen to work when he told me to do that. So he said there's nothing he can do about it and told me to call again when it happens. So obviously it stopped working right after I hung up. So I called again the next day and got information on how to send it back. Hopefully they can replace it and it'll last longer than 2 months. |

what can I say.
this player is a killer.
It plays all my backupped dvd's burned with DVD-x copy, DVD-X platinum and clone DVD.
I used Fuji DVD+R/RW and Maxell DVD+R/RW.
It plays all my Pal DVD's from Europe on my NTSC TV.
It plays all my mp3 cd's and dvd mp3's!.
It has excellent picture and sound quality.
It looks very sharp too.
I had a Sony before and was very happy with it. Only problem was that I had a bunch of PAL dvd's from my previous living in Europe and the Sony couldn't play any of them.
This was the main reason I got the Philips 727 and boy I should have bought this player long time ago.
I don't regret it one minute. |

The Philips 727 successfuly reads the following format/media types: VCD 1.x/2.0, SVCD 1.x/2.0, DVD+-R/RW and MPG Movies (from /Root folder of DVD/CDR/CDRW) without any problems.
The Region Code Media Hacks takes less than 10-seconds to perform > Eject CD-Rom and type 9990 on Remote
I experienced NO issues with video pixelation watching DVD-R/RW movies using DVD-R media: CompUSA 1x, Fuji, Sony, Memorex.
Get this player while you can, it's getting hard to find in the retail sector...buy it online before it's discontinued. |
