Plays everything I've tried so far including raw mpeg files burned on CDR/RW and DVD+RW (recorded TAO, closed, UDF with Joliet on Fuji 4x DVD+RW and Compusa 2.4x DVD+R).
PAL disc subtitles get cut off at the bottom when in Progressive Scan mode. Turn off the prog. scan and it looks fine.
Only wish it had 32x fast forward or reverse speed. 8x is maximum. |

Plays everything I throw at it. SVCD, VCD, MP3s and Jpgs.
Have had it for over 10 months and play a lot of movies and shows dl'd off the net.
Don't like the tiny remote, the tiny buttons and illogical layout.
Would prefer it in black. |

I've owned several DVD players in my life. First was a Philips Magnavox unit I purchased about 5 years ago. I replaced it just because it wouldn't play VCDs correctly and I needed a region free DVD player. I also have owned an APEX AD-660, Sony SPD-S360 and other Apex models. This is the best DVD player i've owned. The Apex AD-660 could be modified more but that doesn't give me a reason to lower the Philips score.
Positives:
plays everything i've thrown at it. PAL/NTSC VCDs, PAL DVDs, even anamorphic ones (had to switch to 16x9 mode on TV though).
Design, features, price (it's down to $70 now, but it was worth the $130 I paid for it when it first came out)
Region free.
I'm so impressed with this unit that i'd probably buy more Philips stuff in the future.
Negatives:
Discs must be VERY clean. Rentals will sometimes skip/freeze even with a little dust or fingerprints on them. I've never had a problem with non-rentals.
Remote could be better, but it's not to bad. Far better than any Apex remote though.
Menu's and graphics could be better looking.

| Well, for now, considering, i don't have my DVD Burner yet, i can only comment on vcd/svcd/jpg and standard bought dvd playbacks. I haven't had one little flaw with it. as a matter of fact, when i created an svcd, the audio and video would slip out of sync on the computer, but when i watched it in the dvd player, it did EXCELLENT in working the two back together, it looked almost flawless. i recommend this dvd player to EVERYONE. |

Real chat with a philips engineer:
ngordon says, "How may I assist you today?"
You say, "The player has problems with playing DVD-+r/rw"
You say, "when powered off for some time and cold, it recognises the disks and plays"
You say, "if stays on and is warm, has troubles even recognising disks"
You say, "or if recognised, may freeze any moment."
ngordon says, "Unfortunately DVD740 does not have the capabilities of playing back DVD-R/-RW or DVD+R/+RW discs."
You say, "also misdetects those writeable disks as mp3-jpeg"
ngordon says, "Please see previous response."
You say, "sorry, it is dvd724"
You say, "not 740, my typo"
ngordon says, "DVD724 does not have such capabilities either."

| As well stated in other user comments, this player would be sensational if not for two cons: 1. the subtitles hanging up and 2. It fails to auto detect the audio PCM on your SVCD's. So when playing SVCD you must go into the setup and manually select PCM. The more annoying is the hangup on subtitles, which I learn here is only in Prog Scan mode. Sub titles do not clear themselves until replaced with a new one. That flaw alone, after 10 months of good service is causing me to retire this machine for a Sony 725. This is unfortunate, because it is a superb player of all media and formats. Many burned DVD-r, +r, +RW that have failed on my other standalones play without problem on this machine. Where other players freeze up this one has no trouble. If your disc loads up on this player then it plays, as I have never had a freeze up yet with it. A good second machine if you're buying it deeply discounted and can accept its two shortcomings. |

The rating was a 9 before i got a hdtv, now i found out from philips tech support that the 724 series has a problem with subtitles in progressive scan mode. the subtitles won't disappear after the character is done talking, instead it will remain on the screen until the next subtitle appears. so if you use progressive scan mode but don't use subtitles much, then i think this is a great player. but if you use prog.scan and watch foreign films or even hollywood films that feature button over video subtitle streams to select special features (spiderman, moulin rouge, akira s.e.) then this player could get annoying very quickly. it did for me and now after only having this since christmas of '02, i'm on the market for a new player.
recap:
interlace (non-prog.scan) mode = 9/10
prog.scan w/o subtitles = 9/10
prog.scan w/ subtitles = 4/10 |

Plays every DVD-R/W I could throw at it (Ritek, Princo, DupEZ, Memorex, Optodisc). The region hack works like a charm. Open the tray and press 1 four times, then hit 0. Change the output from Multi to NTSC and you don't have to worry about regions ever again. It searches data cds for jpg/mpg files of all sorts and automatically plays them. My DVD-VCDs work with no problems. Looks great, both picture and the player itself, with the 32" Sony WEGA TV. It has both digital coax and digital optical audio outs. Couldn't test the progressive scan.
8x limitation is poor and the menu leaves a little to be desired, but overall an excellent player for $75 from BB. |

Won't play my Imation DVD-RWs -loads them, plays about 5-10 sec., then picture locks/freezes;
Also, the picture quality seemed poor - almost grainy, compared to my Apex AD-600 and GE 1101P. |

While lacking some of the features of more advanced players, the Philips 724 packs a lot of features including Progressive Scan for a modest price. I wanted it because I've yet to buy a player that supported DVD-R and +RW, VCD, SVCD, MPEG files, MP3, was tolerant of different UDF partition versions, and didn't stutter or pixelate upon heating up. This player solves all of my needs and I can now play ALL of my discs.
A couple of minor nits:
1) Setup menu is a bit unfriendly. Looks exactly like one used on Apex models.
2) It's not tolerant of long MP3 filenames. It wouldn't even recognize some of my MP3s on CD as legitimate files because of (presumably) their filename length.
3) Only goes up to 8X FF and FR speed. I'm used to 16x.
Otherwise highly recommended for the price. I picked up one for $79 at BestBuy using their $10 instant rebate (good in Cal. stores until 5/19/03 I believe.) |

OK. I just found this out by accident.
The Philips 724AT will play cd-r(w) that are simply data discs containing .MPG files. I accidentaly put in a disc that I was using to store files until I was able to record others to make VCDs and (much to my surprise) it PLAYED!
It starts playing the first file at start-up, but if you then hit STOP it goes to a file menu, similar to MP3 discs, and then you can choose which file you want to play.
Later.

I bought this player at a Target retail store on 4-29-03, becuase it was on clearance pricing. Regular price around $120, clearance price $82. I am specifically seeking a quality DVD player that will play the plethora of XSVCD files I have been downloading from Usenet binaries groups.
My Pioneer DV-434 will play them smoothly, but the aspect ratio is completely screwed up. The picture is vertically squished. The entire picture is squeezed up against the left hand side of the screen, and all people appear extremely tall and skinny. It's unwatchable.
The Philips 724 wouldn't even recognize these discs! They are burned at no higher than 24x on Imation and TDK CD-R discs (32x certified media). As I said, the Pioneer recognizes, and plays them fine (aside from the significant aspect ratio problem outlined). So I was very disappointed that this Philips was useless for playing these discs.
I also found the Philips to take quite a while to recognize discs upon insertion. The Pioneer begins playback of standard VCD discs much quicker.
I have already ordered the Nortech 300 from Amazon. Since it will be under $50 (with shipping and after rebate), it's worth trying. If it's no good for XSVCD, then it will become a bedroom DVD player.

Great Buy for $99 at Best Buy!!! I bought it mainly for Burned DVD+R/RW. It plays them Perfectly. Ritek and Meritline. Burned with Copy to DVD. Not one coaster. It IS possible to burn A 5 episode Stargate SG1(3Hr. 42 minutes on one DVD and the quality is Very acceptable.
The instructions are very comprehensive and complete. The remote is fine. This is my third DVD player and this blows the others away!!! Highly recommend.
PROS-Progressive scan, compatability with virtualy everything, 2-8X FF, 1-3 Zoom, MP3 and every feature you can think of.
CONS-Slow to recognize media.
I think this machine will probably play any DVD's you throw at it. |

| I purchased this unit after reading the reviews on this web site. I couldn't be more satisfied with this unit. Simple, easy to use. I put in a DVD+R/W with MP3's on it. It played perfectly. I also put a KODAK CD in and it played well also reading jpegs easily. So far, the brands of media used were HP,Memorex, and Verbatim. All worked well. I would go with Verbatim at this time. For 94 bucks at Best Buy, It's a great buy. |

| Doesn't play my DVD-R's. Burned with Sony DRU500a on Ritek and TDK. None of the movies will play. This was the ONLY reason I bought this player after reading reviews on here. Apparently some people lied, who knows maybe it can be the media. But yes my burned movies play on other players. |

I was originally looking for an inexpensive unit that I could use to play my DVD-R's that I was creating from my tivo rips. I started doing some research and couldn't believe the list of features on this unit.
I just bought mine at bestbuy for $99. I was still skeptical after reading great review on it so I began testing it. This thing has managed to play everything I've thrown at is thus far! I am ecspecially impressed with the ability to play pal dvd'd. The region stuff works as everyone says! Picture and sound quality look excellent to me. Overall I'd recommend this unit, it's a powerhouse for 99 bux! |

Got this DVD player from Bestbuy for $99.
I am going to return this and try to get a better player. Had a number of problems :
1. Had freeze-ups with some DVDs. Freeze up on jumping to a scene from the menu. Freeze up on 4x FF beyond a certain point in the movie. Freeze up on jumping to a time segment. Pixelation and freeze up occurrs often.
2. Takes forever to load the DVD menu
I wanted to get a region-free, progressive scan player for cheap. I guess you get what you pay for.
