about 5 months After I bought this dvd player, I couldnt get power to the player at all! I called philips and they said the 90 day warrenty was expired to send $35.00 and mail to them, they would fix it... After I found out how much the mail and replacement costs were, I realized I should have bought Sony... I have never had problems with Sony products. This dvd player still sits lifeless!
Sincerely; Very dissapointed customer |

I tried the DVD player with a LOT of pirates DVD movies and VCD as well and it works great, any single disc was read. I'm very satisfied with this player, also have the great "feature" to be Multiregion (in Peru we are Region 4) and it has Progressive Scan but I don't have a HD TV :(
Anyway, this is a great DVD player!!!! |

Philips DVD 724 does not play burned DVD's without the following file "Video_TS.VOB". The DVD display reads "NO DISC". The player plays many formats but if you encounter this error, it is not because of the burned copy but a missing file.

The low rating is only because it died after 19 months of very light use (less than 50 hours total operation). Looks like the microprocessor probably failed. So points off for shoddy manufacturing.
Right up until it died, though, it was a good little set-top player. As many others have noted, the remote design is not ideal. The "power" button is really a "standby" button, the buttons all look and feel identical in the dark, and you eject by pressing "1" (what's the point of having "eject" on a remote anyway? you still have to get up to take the disk out anyway. whatever). The good news is, it plays a lot of formats (more than I've noted above, but it's been a while since I put it through the paces and I no longer remember for certain which few formats it choked on). The multi-region hack is insanely easy, no tools or special disks required. |

| For people having trouble with 724's freezing and trouble playing the second layer. Contact Philips and they send you a firmware upgrade disk free of charge. Follow the instructions and upgrade your player's firmware. I did and the upgrade works and solves the problem. May be Philips should put the upgrade firmware disk image on their website. |

This player was great...
I've owned this thing for over a year and now I have the same problems other posters here have said.
MAJOR problems playing some dual layered dvds.
Player will freeze and you almost have to skip over the scene you were watching for it to continue if it even allows you to keep watching.
Dvd-R seems to play ok on this still though, but discs must be VERY clean or it will freeze.
This player also seems to have problems with certain DVD+R brands like Verbatim, well mine does anyway.
Svcd and VCD on cd's still works great.
I have some problems playing perfectly find retail dvds with this player.....
I about 6 months ago I would've gave this player a 10, it's still a good s/vcd player and dvd-r player to a degree, but when a player stops playing retail dvd's like this I have to lower the score to a low 3 out of 10.
I do not reccomend buying this player, you might be one of the lucky ones who's player doesn't die,but why take the chance?? buy another brand or at least another model.

I have had problems with higher bitrate XVCD/XSVCD discs and skipping. Also, there is an issue with AC3 pass thru for VCD/SVCD discs.
Other than those two issues tho this is a great DVD player!
It plays all the following formats: VCD/SVCD/CVD/KVCD/xVCD/xSVCD/DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3/WMA/JPEG/MPEG-1/KODAK.
I have had no problems with dual layered DVDs, it does FF & RW all video CD formats up to 8X, it plays all MP3 bitrates up to 320 (haven't tried higher), and has many bonus features such as multi region remote control and MPEG data file playback.
I have tried several mid-range players and this is the best I have seen. |

The damn thing plays MPEG-DATA FILES!!!
I usually backup my mpeg movies to CD-DATA disc archives after burning to VCD. (all via NERO)
These are straight DATA discs containing only the MPEG files and none of the standard VCD file structure or content.
The DVD-724 reads these DATA discs as "MP3-JPEG" and displays file names (truncated 11 char.) in the tree view. The tree is navigable, same as if files were jpegs or will play them in sequence, COMPLETE WITH STEREO SOUND!!
The FF, REV, PAUSE functions all work too!
MPEG files encoded at sub-VCD standard display settings and sub-VCD standard bitrates are degraded in various ways, but these play as well.
Overall, the TV pic quality appears to be slightly lower than VCD, but it's difficult to say, and for me a small trade off, now being able to view Mpeg DATA files on the frickin' TV!
ASF,WMV,AVI files are ignored by the 724.
None of this works with MPEG-2 files, but when those are encoded to SVCD, they are gorgeous.
I expect to draw some flack from some of you on this claim... all I can say is..... Take an MPEG DATA disc to Wal-Mart etc and TRY IT YOURSELF. I would never buy a piece of equipment without first testing as I wish IN THE STORE. For $159 + tax, this player is an excellent buy.
MANY THANKS to the hosts and the savy contributors to VCDhelp, I have learned much from you.

Plays VCDs on CD-R, made with TMPGEnc and VCDEasy.
Annoying lack of audio problem. Two ways to get the audio to work:
Push the "2-ch. analog direct" button on my receiver to force reading from the analog signals (Simple 1-button fix the wife and kids can use, but limits the sound field features of the receiver)
Go into the DVD player's menu under SPDIF and switch from SPDIF "RAW" to "PCM". (too much for the family to remember, but at least the receiver gets the benefit of a digital input that can be processed). |

Only thing this player won't play is an xCVD at an insanely high bit rate (7000+), actually that's wrong.. it will play it.. it just skips.
I love being able to just burn my mpg files directly to DVD.
I want to buy 10 of these in case mine keep breaking (I have really bad luck) |

I got this player back in August 8 2002, since then I never had any problems with the player but now it refuses to play Original DVD's.
The players still plays MP3s and SVCD's as well.
I talked to Philips about the problem and they send me a firmware update that didin't work.
So now if I rent a movie I can't watch it.
I'm just curious if somebody else had the same problem because dosen't make sence that you can play a DVD+R or DVD+RW without a problem but not an original DVD.
I never liked the remote control, but you can't complain for this. Philips wanted $90 dollars to repair this player but I don't think is worth it; this player was replaced by a Toshiba with way better features and a more friendly controller, also I can control this player with my Universal remote control; I was never able to this with the 724. |

It plays everything I throw at it. I mainly got it for the XSVCD and Progressive Scanning. Also, ,duh, for the DVD playback. The video is very sharp, great color too. Also, using 2400kbps bitrates with the GOP structure and quantize matrix of KVCD works great. I get great video at low bitrates!
BTW, got 2 test MP3 on CD-R and CD-RW. Will test using 320 kbps audio. Also, I will test XSVCD on CD-RW. |

| This player's great! I recently obtained a Sony DRU-500A and burned DVD-Rs and DVD+RW. All works great with great image quality and all. The thing is, if I could, I would give this player a 9.5, but .5 rounds up! All of you who complain about the remote, I DIDN'T BUY THE DVD PLAYER FOR THE REMOTE! The things that bug me about it is how with MP2 audio it doesn't automatically convert it to PCM to go through the digital audio out. The other thing is that the load times with DVD-R (for me, and only sometimes) the load times can be in the 15 to 20 seconds range. |

I have had this dvd player for almost 2 months and I love it. I see what people are saying about the audio/video being out of sync when moving forward on an SVCD, but the player corrects itself after a couple of seconds.
I gave the player a 9 instead of a 10, because if they put a bit more effort into the remote, it would be awesome.
Also, I know some people are saddened by the fact that you don't have high fast forward speeds for VCD/SVCD playback. if you enter a number and press ok, the playr will skip to that timeframe, readjust audio and video, and then continue to play.
I have only used dvd-rs on this player, and they play great. I have not tried dvd+rs yet.
All in all, I think that this player is a great buy. |

I did have some trouble at first with the player.
My system specs:
dru 500a
win xp
record max now (bye bye nero)
Nero would burn good dvd-r and dvd+rw for my philips 711 but not for the 724. I switched to RNM and my troubles floated away. If you first turn on this player and it's purple (and you have a tv that supports progressive scan) just hit the progesive scan button.
Other tools I used:
tmpegc, dvd2one, ulead 2.0, and vitualdub |

This unit is great.
SVCD workswell.some out of sync issues when jumping ahead but many units do this. (DVDx made, have not tried commercial disks yet)
Menus on VCD work well (Nero Burned)
DVD-R Ritek and DVD-RW cheapy works kpermedia is working well.
remote is too small as reported but manageable.
Really think of replacing my Daewoo as well.
Love the way you can feed this unit raw, unauthored Mpegs and Jpegs. Great for looking at an archive quickly. |

Now I can play all my VCD and SVCD cd's. So far I have tried to watch a few DVD+R's and havn't run into any problems so far. |

Absolutely amazing player at a VERY nice price.
I love the fact that no matter what I throw at it, it plays it without a hitch. I recently made a 5000 VBR xSVCD and am going to up this to see what the max is on this player.
I've used all kinds of CD-R's and have yet to find one that didn't work. Including one that was just a white CD that said 4x CD-R on the front and had some writing in Japanese on it.
CVD compatibility is great at any bitrate.
Absolutely no complaints except the remote control SUCKS!! I can't find the play button without the lights on.
Any questions on this player, please email me. |

There seems to be a slight problem with PAL->NTSC conversion on this unit. I was watching music DVDs from Europe on my NTSC HDTV and noticed rare sound interruptions. After a brief moment of complete silence the playback is resumed. The sound skips are not related to a particular location on the disk. It seems that this player cannot keep the converted audio and video perfectly synchronized and has to do a "hard" sync when video gets ahead of audio. That's my guess, anyway.
I have tried 3 different units and they all behave that way. Maybe this explains why NTCS<->PAL conversion is not advertised on this unit.
Otherwise it is the best unit out there (and I tried quite a few). |

For several years, I've owned a Philips DVD711 that played virtually everything I threw at it. However, just recently, I noticed that it was choking on a few DVD-Rs and SVCDs. So when I saw the 724 on sale at Best Buy, I jumped on it.
I have to say that so far it has been great. Like the 711, I use the 724 primarily for SVCDs and DVD-Rs. It has played every SVCD and DVD-R I've put in. For SVCDs, I almost always use TDK CDRs burned on a 32x Lite-On CDRW. For DVD-Rs, I've used TDKs and Ritek G03s burned on a Pioneer DVR-A05. No problems with either brand or recorder.
I have not looked into disabling Macrovision or making the player region-free as I have no need for either.
Here's what I don't like about the 724:
When playing SVCDs, you have to manually select RAW or PCM on the SPDIF menu. I also had to do this with the 711, so I am used to it. However, I would've thought by now Philips would have made it so the player would auto-detect.
No resume function. If you stop playing a movie in the middle, and push "play," the movie will resume where you stopped it. However, if you stop playing a movie, turn the player off or standby, and start power it back on, the movie starts playing from the beginning. With the 711, it would "remember" the stopped location for up to five movies.
Pushing the open/close button on the player does not bring it out of standby mode. I've been used to pushing the open/close button to "wake" the 711, but that does not seem to work with the 724. More of an annoyance than anything else.
These gripes do not detract enough from the 724 for me to not recommend this player. If you are in the market for a good SVCD/DVD-R player, look no further. It has been an outstanding player that has had no trouble with anything I've thrown at it.
Two thumbs up! |
