I got mine for a reduced price since it was a "going out of production model" and what a good thing for me. I read on this player that people have had problems, I can say for sure it's only because you havn't got the latest firmware for sure. It's allso risky to upgrade your player to the latest firmware. This is a nice site for the Philips players. If you have problems with it, why not turn it in to philips for firmware upgrade. :] I have no problems with any cd's, tried about 30 vcd's and svcd. Some Xsvcd, lodes of mp3 cd's (old one's too like 5years. No problem. Important notice, I allways burn my CD-R vcd or svcd at 4x and "Track-at-once" mode, since I read somewhere that this is the safest way and most players won't have any problems reading the discs. Here is lot's of info on Philips DVD players http://philips.ianc.net/ No problems with mp3, vcd, svcd, xsvcd, dvd, music cd's ... works like a charm. Nice that it supports both long filenames and MP3 ID tags :) The thing with mp3 is that it only plays mp3 files that you put in the root of your cd but it's nice anyway. Nice that it supports SVCD Sub's as well, should work on vcd too :) The only thing it dosn't support is DivX I think. You can hack this player with the RC6 code thing that you can find on the other 7XX models in here. The only thing is that you need a special remote control to get the HACK working :/ ... I was lucky in owning a palm with IR so the hack works great. It's no region free and plays anything, even RCE (region code enhanced discs but only in REG1) and for now the REC discs are only produced in reg1. If there ever is RCE for reg2 etc you can buy a chip and solder it and you have region control. The software hack is free though :) The one I have is a Philips 723 Model 021 I have firmware (c) Philips '01-'02 5519 4.23.14-2 0606P22200200 6.2.10 On a 723 you would: Switch on your dvd player. Go to the first menu (user preference settings) Scroll down to the menu that has: access control, status window, pbc, beeper, help text, smart power off Enter such menu (press arrow right), and scroll down below smart power off. Oki, I havn't tested how high rates the player can handle on XSVCD and XVCD but, someone else said 3000 and well seems to be oki :) Thats it.

When i play mp3 encoded Lame codec then everything is OK, but simetimes files mp3 not read corectly if codec is difrend. Simetimes!!! MP3 ID3 TAG somtimes not displayed, or track is ignored (jump for nex track) I send him to service-they change bios. The problem is smaller, but still exits. This new Bios have unlock Digital Output when i Listening mp3, and name of mp3 are litle difrend displayed on the DVD. Next problem: Mail motor is very-very noisy, i hear exactly how disc rotate. It's torture when I listening quiet music. DVD read CDR 650,700,800MB but not 870MB :( (everything with Overburn) Is enybody knows, how I can check Bios Version on my DVD Player? CVD? $175 N/A 7 of 10 DivX Comments: This is a nice player. Unfortunatly I cannot fast forward my SVCD's (I already tried the Scandata.dat :( ) and the menu's I've made with Nero don't work. Also jpg-file's and BMP's do not work. If anybody knows a solution for my problems, please add a comment. For the dutch guy about the DTS-encoder: Ik heb bij de technische gegevens gekeken en er niks over gevonden.

I have tried to make s SVCD with "vcdeasy" soft and the fast forward and backward working without any problems, but unfortunately the subtitles is freezing. The subtitles I'm muxing with "winsubmux". All my CDs I have burned with NERO. If somebody knows what is the problem with my subtitles, please write me there. Thank you. Otherwise I'm satisfied with this DVD player.

CVD? $300 N/A 3 of 10 Comments: I have great problems playing (s)vcd. Sometimes it works, sometimes the tv freezes. Moving forwards and/or backwords freezes sometimes too. On other "noname" dvd-players i had no problems with these disks! Will now try to burn with vcdEasy (before Nero), otherwise i´ll buy a cyberhome 505.

Platinum) and used several authoring tools (Nero, DVDit PE, myDVD) and I haven't have any problems playing the dics except using a HP DVD+R disc. It wouldn't load but after upgrading to the latest firmware it worked fine. After using a Samsung DVD709 which could not play DVD+R/RW and (S)VCD properly i'm happy with this player that is also good looking. VCD and SVCD seem to work perfectly using cheap blue colored CD-R's. However, I cannot fast forward and fast backward. MP3 on CD-R work fine but unfortunately the analog outputs must be used to hear music. The coax/optical output has no soundoutput playing mp3. I gonna make some other discs (also KODAK jpeg,mini DVD etc.) and will post my findings here. Erik.

N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: I tested this DVD PLAYER using every kind of CDs I found. Plays well VCD, SVCD and CVD. Plays Non-Standard SVCD (ex. audio @ 48000 hz, or SVCDs with low bitrate ex 110 minutes on 80 min CDR). Plays also very cheap CD-R (but it's better burn them at low speeds). Reads audio CDs and supports CD TEXT feature. I think that playback was a little bit faster than normal CD players (I'm a dj, I hear the differences in pitch-time) I had problems with CD-MP3 ... it's very difficult to create a compatible disc (lots of my CDs weren't played). Someone knows the right proprieties to use (ex. CD mode 1, Long names supports, etc.)?

N/A 7 of 10 MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I bought this player to use my mp3 cd's and I have to say that I am very disapointed. If you use tags 2.x the player freeze and you must reboot the machine. I spended one week trying to burn an mp3 cd that play fine without success while my mp3's just play fine on my mac, my iPod and my Creative Jukebox. It is not impossible to make mp3 cd's that play fine but it's really to difficult and I was bored to see so often the Disc Error message. I did return the player to the shop.

CVD? $250 N/A 9 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Plays all my SVCDs perfectly without any hickups / distortion. FFWD / REW also works. Picture quality is very good. Michael : the time indication isn't correct when disc is longer than 39m51s. 39m51s is displayed as total playing time, specific time as a certain position isn't correct anymore also BUT THE WHOLE DISC IS PLAYED (verify on your computer or other stand alone !). Upgraded firmware to latest 4.22.70-0. Its a pity you can't FFWD / REW mp3's and directory structures aren't displayed. Nice design. Button layout of remote control could be better. Overall i'm very satisfied with this player (after being very disapointed with my Philips DVD 751 regarding SVCD support). Eric

N/A 10 of 10 Comments: I got this DVD for £140 online. Made a SVCD using a cheap CD-R and in ntsc format and it worked perfect, no freezes , im sure it will be perfect for VCD Aswell!

Propably it's new version of 722 player so it should also support DVD-R/W and DVD+R, but it's only information from dealer, not tested feature.

According to the manual it plays: - VBR and CBR. - Supported formats: 32, 64, 96, 128, 192, 256 I tested these formats and they all played without a glitch: - CBR: 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256, 320 - VBR: Max. quality with Audio Catalyst (96 - 256) - VBR: Max. quality with Lame v3.92 using the --r3mix option. I bought this DVD player in The Netherlands (Europe).
