I used Verbatim DVD+R DL 2,4x media for this, after burning with ImgBurn, and setting the layer break manually.

A DVD with size 3,98 GB works fine, another with 3,41 GB not. But smaller DVD+RWs work fine either.

But after the guarantee ran out (2 and a half years later), it broke down. No DVD disc could be played at all (only CD's), the screen got blue with the message that the player didn't support the disc region... for all my discs... I found later that the reader broke down and Philips cannot replace it, so I'll need to buy another one... It was a good player for 2 and a half years.

One thing about DVD-R discs (and likely DVD+R), It must be nearly full (over 4GB) to play in this player. If you have a small video that you want to test out, it will not work on DVD-R. DVD+RW will play small (under 4GB) discs fine.

N/A 7 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: An update on my comments re DVD+R Media - I have now got QP brand discs to work OK in this plyer. My recorder (Pika One dual) needed a firmware upgrade to recognise the media code (001) otherwise it recrded at single speed and not in the correct format? Now records at 4x and plays OK on the 711..... Player has excellent build quality - very well made, but lacking some of the features found on newer players such as MP3 and JPEG playback. Good picture quality. Mine has hardware region hack.

I have ordered a firmware upgrade from Philips, and will see if this fixes the problem.

MP3 WMA CVD $350 N/A 7 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG DivX Comments: For CD-R's I use TDK, for CD-RW's I use EMTEC, I burn my audio-cd's with HP-MyCD, I burn VCD's and SVCD's with Ulead DVD Moviefactory 2 or VCDeasy (this one is more difficult). i convert my video's with DVDx, really a perfect program to be called freeware. Playing VCD's isn't a problem, it works perfect. BUT I had once a VCD with 18 tracks on it and this dvd-player only played 12 tracks, on my nephew's dvd-player they were all 18 available. Playing SVCD's isn't a problem too but sometimes the audio comes too late for a half of a second. Menus on VCD works perfect with PBC on. I am glad with this dvd-player but I have some remarks: When he is reading a disc and I ask him to open, it reacts very slow, when I push a button, it reacts slow...It also seems like it is a cheap player when it opens, and sometimes he smells like our old LP pick up. I have also noticed that he plays quite bright, I always have to change the settings of my television. And it always has to be perfect or he won't play it, when I say 192kbps audio VCD, it doesn't play good, it has to be exact 224 kbps, my nephews dvd-player plays the most audio bitrates, like 128 kbps, he has a Sony DAV-S800. BUT that player doesn't support SVCD, XVCD, SVCD...so I'm glad with my Philips-player.

All reviews I've read list that it supports both, but I've called tech support once and did the online tech support chat, and both reps said "No, it does not support PAL" Who knows. If anyone's gotten the "remote hack" to work for multiregion for this, please email me and let me know!!

CVD? $100 N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename Comments: Played SVCD with standard DVDx settings, worked perfect. Plays all my DVD-Rs, except when I split a movie onto 2 DVDs using IFO.Edit. When I split a movie the first DVD will play fine, but with the 2nd it freezes after every chapter and I have to go to the chapter menu and select the corresponding chapter number to resume playback. Was hoping somebody else had this problem and knew how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An Imation DVD-RW would work, but only after filling the disk to be over 4Gb in size.

N/A 1 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I've bought my Philips dvd 711 about 2 years ago - It was wonderfull, it read zone 1 and 4 dvds and the only "problem" that I had was that it didn't read svcd subtitles. But ended about 6 months ago. Suddendly, when I tried to play a disc, it just frozed down - I could hear a strange sound and I almost couldn't get the disc out, it simply didn't ejected. The warranty had already ended (1 year warranty), and the fix would cost more then what I paid for it - the problem is a piece called "module". I live in Brazil, and doing some searching on google, i've found several people with the same problem with philips dvd players. Philips stuff is never going to get in my house again and I will recommend everyone I know to never buy Philips products.

MP3 WMA CVD? $200 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Bought this player 3 years ago and boy am I glad. This machine is built like a tank. It is located in our 3 year-old's room and it sees daily use and abuse - and I mean abuse! (like climbing on the machine, loading discs halfway etc...) Never broke down and plays anyting I throw at it - VCDs, SVCDs of various brands (but only if authored to standrd). Very advanced features for its time: plays PAL and NTSC (but no conversion). Component video outs, both optical and coax audio outs, and DTS. Only drawbacks are no MP3 playback and the remote ergonomics are so-so. Overall was a great buy in 2000, although you can probably find better ones today. For my next player I will definitely consider Philips.

Plays most DVD-Rs burned with my Pioneer 104 except when I split the DVD to 2 DVD-Rs using IFO.Edit. When split, the 2nd DVD freezes at the end of every chapter and I must return to the menu and select the next corresponding chaper. If ever one else has had this problem and knows a possible solution please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easily hacked to regionfree with one4all remote. Does not play MP3. Was good player when it came out, but you can find much better players today.
