CVD? $? over 1 year 6 of 10 Comments: I have one CD which won't load. It thinks it is MP3, but it is not. It doesn't work smoothly with DVD's. Lord of the rings, special edition gave so much trouble, I took my computer to watch the end. I found out about the firmware update. This day I just updated the firmware. Gave no problem. Didn't try a DVD yet again. Firmware update available at: http://nic-nac-project.de/~shaice/philips.php (For some reason you can't find it at the philips website).

However, on my PC, PowerDVD reads it perfectly. Same problem as described here in some posts... I try to ask Philips Wait and see

This plays XSVCD with bitrate up to 4500 but when bitrate is higher than 3600 sound breaks sometimes. 2.Very good quality of pictures (*.jpg) 3. This player works also with mini-disks though no info in manual! Works with Platinum brand DVD+R (RICHOJPNR00 media). Nashua DVD-RW (OPTODISK001 media) only works roughly 1 out of 4 retries when re-inserting the same disk.

I can see the directories and select them but impossible to see/open the JPG files ? What can get this to work ? Thanks

CVD? $80 N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG DivX MPEGISO Comments: PROS: * Although you cannot skip FBI-warnings or other copyright messages, you can fastforward through them. * Easily converted into a region free player using the remote control! Can just as easily be set to a certain region for playback of RCE protected discs. * Firmware is easy to upgrade from CD. * The player is widescreen (16:9) aware. If your wisescreen TV allows for peripheral switching of display modes, the player will automatically set 4:3, WIDE or ZOOM modes appropriate for the DVD-Video you are playing. It will also place the subtitles appropriate for the display mode you are watching. For this to work you must connect the player using a SCART cable. * Player is suitable for multisystem televisions, both PAL and NTSC. * RGB output for the highest possible signal quality. CONS: * The on-screen display is a bit awkward to navigate as you have to confirm everything by pressing OK instead of just toggling it with the cursor keys. * You cannot browse the files on a disc while an MP3 is playing. * Very annoying is that the default PBC (Playback Control) setting for (S)VCD is set to off. When set to off you cannot jump to chapters. Even worse, if you try to skip a chapter with PBC off it will stop playing and return to the main menu. :( * Switching angles on a DVD-Video is not instantaneous. It takes about a second before it switches. * The user manual is very poorly done. It does not explain all functions. No mention is made it can also play CD-DA! Also the karaoke options for (S)VCD are not explained. The Dutch section has many spelling errors and has untranslated German text. * Macrovision cannot be disabled easily. It can be done, but you must open the player and connect to PC. Not worth the trouble for most people. SUMMARY: Philips is a major brand and has done very well in implementing the features that are mostly found on unknown Chinese brands. Philips actually implements the VCD and SVCD standards fully and correctly unlike many other brands. Many of the cons could be fixed in firmware however. Let's hope Philips reads this.

I've tested it with DVD+R and DVD+RW but only the DVD+R works. The DVD+RW is an Philips so I thought it should work!

N/A No rating Comments: I got a few mails from ppl asking for the firmware to solve the problems with the french versions of the dvd player. I have download my firmware from here. http://www.euroservice.pfr.philips.com/assistance/dvd/DVDSD3_0_soft4_15C.html But it seems like they passworded it now, you can see that when going to http://www.euroservice.pfr.philips.com My best bet was trying to contact Philips France since those other countries are too stupid to communicate with the others. And they are not aware of the bug nor the firmware

It has played everything I have thrown at it except selectable SVCD subtitles, but CVD subs work. All in all a good buy.
