But unfortunately, when I play a dvd+r/+rw, the picture freezes for a few seconds (sometimes from the beginning on, other times after an hour or so).

N/A 5 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename Comments: I have owned this DVD player for a little over a year and up until now it has played any media thrown at it! Recently I have been placing legitimate DVD in the player and with a few it shows, NO DISC. Once it has shown no disc once for a DVD it will never recognise it again. I have placed these DVD's into other machines and they have played, no problem at all. I am very disapointed, especially as this problem has occurred just outside of the warranty period!

CVD? $100 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Just got this player. it plays everything I put in it so far, it makes a low whirring noise when spinning up and seeking but it's nowhere near annoying. It's zoom function is fantastic! Better than my tv's own. Its region hack has to be the easiest one out there.. Press 0 five times while the tray is out followed by angle. Pro's: Plays all media Nice remote Easy region hack Cheap Con's: Whirring spin-up noise Some vcd/svcd dvd's can take a bit to start playing Some might not like the design All in all: a GREAT player! I give it my highest recommendation.

CVD? $125 N/A 7 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: My main reason for buying this player was its absolute awesome media compatibility. It plays almost everything: DVD+/- R/RW, CD-R / RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3. From what I've heard and read it also plays VCD/SVCD files on DVD as well as VCD/SVCD compatible MPEG files on CD/DVD media. The player has a preset region lock, which can be reset to codefree by pressing 00000 on the remote control while the tray is open. The players menu setup looks a little spartanic and reminded me a lot on my last asian DVD player (Yamakawa 788). Not exactly what you would expect from a brand name like Philips. But that is something I can live with. For its absolutely awesome compatibility and features this player is absolutely unbeatable in its price range. Normally I would rate it a 10. The reason I only gave it a 7 was its main drawback: noise. I couldn't believe my ears when I first inserted a DVD in this player. I never heard such a noisy player !! The players noise is sometimes almost unbearable, especially in silent movie scenes ! I never thought that noise would be a problem from a brand name player like Philips. Boy was I wrong! I thought my old asian DVD player was loud, but the Philips 634 is even MUCH MUCH louder ! I am seriously thinking about returning the player because of this !

See the above site: "Tray open, 0000 audio" gives dvd634 front keys "Tray open, 0000 zoom" gives dvd640 front keys "Tray open, 0000 RepAB" gives dvd733 front keys. Since it lists also the left-arrow and subtitle keys, I think it is save to say it is official Philips coding, not hacking. (might include setting the regio) I got at this site from http://reijndert.homelinux.com/ -> firmware. This site warns about a counter on the regio setting, after 25 times it can be over (and stuch to what you set). It alo includes access to the service menu (with a PC, dedicated serial cable and a dedicated connector INSIDE the device) btw: I rate my player 9 since I only have it a couple of days and it does not play CDVideos which my CDi did play. I have not found any player that does play them, not even the PC-based ones. Detail: CDVideos differ from VideoCDs (greenbook v.s. whitebook, don't know which is which)

There is a few glitches with it: -when you start the DVD-SVCD, the picture might look scrambled. Just press stop and then resume play. Generally on SVCD: -when you play anamorfic 16:9, picture goes out of sync (and starts shaking). Encode the same picture (exact pixels) as 4:3 instead, and make it widescreen with the dvd-player/tv manually. There is also a tool called fix12c15.zip that doas the same thing without having to recode (and I guess that DVDPatcher does it as well) -have had problems with ISO Mpeg2-files (files as is, not made as a dvd-svcd) in SVCD-format. When I used VCD resolutions (but still Mpeg2) I've seen no problems at all. Other: -at least on my player I can't get digital audio on coaxial output on SVCD/VCD.

For just Euro 149,00 you got: DVD - sharp picture & sound CD-Audio, MP3, Jpg, VCD, SVCD support and a very simple REGION-FREE HACK! Firmware can be easily updated via CD-R. It didn't have any problem plating dirty DVDs. Not many audio options, but I don't care. GREAT BUY!

One interesting detail: - the SVCD standard (licenced by PHILIPS!) sets a standard for subtitles called SVCD or PHILIPS subtitles. However, the most well known, used and implemented is the "SVCD CVD subtitles". By desire for compatibility, PHILIPS used is his device the popular CVD-style subtitles !!! The chip used is a ESS VIDEODRIVE, THE most compatible on the market. The region hack (0 0 0 0 <reg.#>) and the jpeg hack (0 0 0 0 <ANGLE>/<SUBTITLE>) works OK. Display status with <open tray> + <DISPLAY> works OK. Plays JPEG's and MPEG's in ISO mode. With JPEG's it has features like preview mode (thumnails), image rotation (yes), slide show with programable timeouts, etc. I played some scrached DVD's (4$ China made) I could not think of they could play wihout a glitch. The image quality compared to ANY software player on PC is much better. So if you want to play your SVCD's and DVD's on the PC, forget it. Buy a PHILIPS. Some people said things about compatibility with SVCD menus and subtitles with Nero. Remember this: for advanced SVCD options forget Nero. Use GNU VCDImager/ VCDeasy, Ulead MovieFactory, ROXIO VideoPack, etc. Make the SVCD compliant and it will play OK, less the ANAMORPHIC bug... Tons of PRO's .. A few CON's: - short (11) filenames only in folder modes; - anamorphic (16:9) SVCD jitter and colour shift :-(( - the service and support (at least here in Romania) SUCKS BIG times!! I had a problem with the power supply and they were mfkrs. My luck I brought it from METRO and they replaced the device. - it has no S-video out. it outputs only RGB and CVBS. I measured the signals in the SCART cable and on pin 15 there is only Red, never Chroma, whatever you do. My Panasonic Quintrix has no sharpness control on RGB, so I will have to build an adaptor. - CD-RW TDK 4x was the only media that did not work. The PHILIPS series 6xx and 7xx clearly targets movie enthousiasts, those of us who know the difference between VHS and DVD, ripping DVD or DivX into SVCD, using CD's for home movies or shows, and so on. If you are just a white-collar guy who makes $$$ and buys $25 DVD's on his way home, go to SONY, PANASONIC, JVC, or whatever. They don't give a sh.t about us, regular folks.
