Very good player for the money it costs here. It automatically plays almost everything you stick inside! It plays DVDs with very good image, except aeras of the picture wich contains lots of red solid details, where horizontal lines appears. Picture would be just excellent if that "artifatc" would not exist. Anyway...
A/V Connections are solid and worked just fine (composite, Y/C & component). Audio analog output has got just L/R Stereo RCAs, but Digital Coaxial (good) and Digital-to-DAT-type devices (never tried).
Plays DVD and DVD-R perfectly. Plays VCDs and SVCDs with incredible quality and smooth playback, then you start to think if it´s worth to buy an expensive DVD Recorder...while you can burn regular n´ cheap CD-Rs into a standard SVCD with VERY GOOD quality and sound. Sadly, it tooks 2 seconds between a chapter and the following to read. Frustrating if you copy live music shows and you separate the songs into tracks. Image did not freeze or jump. Very smooth playback without artifacts or "playback blockiness".
Recognized miniDVD or CD-R with DVD/MPEG-2 standard files, but it played them very slowly when they had more than 3000 kb/s. Not reccommendable.
Played MPEG-1 files very good and MPEG-2 up to 2500/s the same way.
It is NTSC/PAL switchable and it plays up to 6 Region Code Zones, but cannot deactive MacroVision!!!
Plenty of functions, menus, screensaver and auto-recognition-playback of any media you insert. The remote control unit is not that succesfull, even it has got long distance functionality, it´s buttons need some time to get used to your fingers. Not immediate response...
My rating scored 8 n´ half, because of the horizontal-red artifacts on some movies (Run Lola Run/Mission To Mars), some little problems described above...and it takes 2 or 3 second to recognize the media you stick inside after you push the tray!!!
But, very good DVD Player from Philips. |

Every CD I've burned has worked either as a VCD or Data MPEG CD.
I cannot get the SVCD to work...the file flashes on screen.
I have only tried Sony DVD+R and Fuji DVD+
RW for DVD's. Works great.

Picture worse than my old vcr. Only plus is that it played everything that I threw at it. Apex 1200 picture better, but the model I had wasn't region free hackable, so both of these went back to store and I ordered a Daewoo dvd5800.

Bought mine for $69 and was very impressed. My old DVD player is a P.O.S. Go.Video 5000 which couldn't even play DVDs correctly (let alone SVCDs or VCDs or photos).
When you burn MPEG2 or MPEG1 files onto CD-r with XP's own burning software (i can't imagine any 3rd party burning software posing a problem) they play beautifully on the Philips 624AT.
mpeg2 clips going well past 2600 kbps play back slowly and also have audio stop every now and then to catch up with the slow video. But it does not break out in blocks all over the place like my Go.Video when it even plays at all.
You can even play back vobs burned to cd's but again playback is slow and audio stutters.
Photos burned as regular files also playback as slideshow perfectly with auto resize and you have option to roate or flip, set to slideshow or stills with manual advance.
Overall absolute winner. Highly recommended. I can't comment on DVD picture quality but I can tell you it plays SVCD and VCD with better quality than through the TV out on my Dazzle DVC II with Hardware Mpeg2 playback. |

| Big letdown that it doesn't play DVD-MP3, otherwise it would have scored higher. I used the same Hewlett Packard DVD+RW that works on the Philips 724, but it did not load up on the 624. Region hack same as other Philips DVD players. Video is somewhat grainy even on component out. |
