Plays lots of stuff,
DVD-R
DVD+R
DVD+RW
DVD-RW
SVCD , xDVD , vcd , Program .mpg files burned as data files on CD. Home authored DVDs (dvd-it and adobe encore) with menus/chapters.
Region Free Hack.
If it has problems reading a disc, sometimes the player gets stuck and the only option is to "Reboot" the player (it becomes unresponsive to input from the Remote, even the power button). They actually have a "reboot" button on the unit itself separate from the power button.
Overall very happy with it. It has 1 optical and 1 coax digital sound output. Component and S-video and RCA video out. One of the Audio Format outputs have to be changed manually (PCM), it should auto detect it.
Acutally performance rating is 8 but with the features and price I rate it 9 overall. |

I own that babe for almost 18 months and had no complaints so far
VIDEO
I burn my videos on DVD+R (TDK) and DVD-R (Sony and Princo) using Clone DVD 2 and never had a problem, no problem with a couple videos on no-name DVD-R either
I regularly use a Philips DVD+RW which works fine
I have tried VCD and SVCD on plain CD/R and had no problems apart from the fact that there is no fast forward/backwards in the case of svcd, but quite frankly I find the quality of the VCD acceptable and I don't see any reason why I would go for svcd (there's always the dvd option) so it wasn't a major disadvantage for me (both vcd and svcd created using pinnacle's studio 7)
AUDIO
I have tried audio cd's and copies (all made with nero 5, 6) both on CD/R and CD/RW, all played flawlessly and so did my mp3 on CD/R (even in the case of cheap media)
OK its not so slim like modern machines and maybe it could be a little more refined in terms of noise but it does pretty much everything I needed it for so I am happy with it..still I cannot claim I am using it for doing very complicated things so I am giving it 8/10 |

Plays almost everything.
I tried standard VCD encoded with TMPgenc authored with VCDeasy 1.1.5.2(with menus and chapters) and burned with Nero.
Also SVCDs are ok, i tried them authored and burned with ulead DVDMovieFactory.
Idem for CVD.
I also tried xvcd but with max bitrate at 1300 kbps and they run properly, didn't try bigger bitrates.
All my tests worked fine both on very cheap cd-r and cd-rw.
I also have some very cheap PRINCO DVD-R 2x and they plays perfectly.
Didn't try yet with DVD-RW but I'm very curious.
MP3 compatibility is very good also but I can't remember if they were CBR or VBR mp3s...sorry. |

I have no problems at all with this.I have encoded both VCD and SVCD's, using TMPGenc and burning with Nero, using expensive CD-R's and Cheap CD-R's.Fast forward works as well and so does rewind.
I see that someon says some SVCD's play in black and white. My frined DVD player,is the same one,did this.We figured out how to fix it.
On the remote hit video menu (or settings). It's one of those 2.
When menu pops up on screen go to video output.
Output to TV(something like that)
Somewhere in there there will be a setting to adjust the video from Multi,Ntsc and Pal.If it's on mutli change it to NTSC.Try the svcd now and it won't be in black and white but color. |

This is a great player. Picked it up at Wal-Mart in Ottawa, Canada. This machine has played everything I've put in it, though I have not tried any DVD media except original DVD's.
I was dissapointed to find that there was no volume control on the remote (mute button only), but I guess that's pretty minor.
I've creted discs with Nero (VCD, SVCD and plain .mpg files), and all have played without a prolem whether they were "standard compliant" or not. .mpg files don't support forward or rewind, but VCD and SVCD support up to x8 FFW, REW and SFW (slow forward), which are the arrows around the OK button (up is SFW, left and right are REW and FFW).
mpg files have been encoded using TMPGEnc.
Cheers,
Modesto

| Just a little comment to report that one of my customers couldn't get a DVD-R made with Sonic DVDit on a Maxell DVD-R to work. Maxell is rated the most compatable brand of DVD-R media available by the July, 2002 issue of DV magazine so I believe this is significant evidence that the player cannot play DVD-R media. |

I did research to find a good DVD player that supports
1.DVD
2.SVCD
3.VCD
4.Jpeg
5.Is black in color
6.Was relatively cheap ($99)
...and found this player. This is a replacement for my Apex 1200 which played fine, except for random 2-3 second freezes on certain DVDs. And the remote is horrible, and the overall response was slow (when opening tray, accessing disks, jpeg images. Also it had no LED read out. Other than that, the Apex 1200 was great.
The Philips is great as far as the remote goes, but certain set-up features have to be done thru an on-screen menu instead of with the remote (as was the case with the Apex). But that is probably the reason the Apex remote sux. Too many small buttons on an already small remote.
I miss the 'picture sharpen' featured on the Apex. The Philips has settings for the picture, but no sharpen.
Also the '3D audio' feature on the Philips is horrid compared to the Apex. Unless I don't have the settings correct (only have it 2 weeks). Enabling it makes the audio sound 'tinny' and an echo-ish reverb. The Apex 1200 3D setting was awesome sounding.
And of course, the Apex 1200 has a very cheap feeling to it. More like a DVD-rom on steroids. But...it was only 68$. Bottom line, The Philips 623 is a good, sound player that plays anything you throw at it. Plus it has a region free hack. All boils down to what you want in a DVD player. All have their pros and cons. |

I did a lot of research on this great site to see what kind of DVD player to buy.
My first choise was the Norcent DP-300. When I went to the WalMart store they were out. It was going to be a week before more came in and I wanted one sooner than that. I wrote down all the models they had in stock and came back to the site to do more reasearch.
Here I found the Philips DVD-724 played all the formats I wanted so I went back to the store and looked again. The Philips DVD-623 looked to be the same as the 724 but no progressive scan and black in colour. I asked the clerk if I could return it if it was not what I wanted, no problem. Brought it home, set it up and started to throw some discs in it.
I borrowed a mini-dvd burned with Pinnacle Studio 8 on a "Smart Buy" CD-R from a freind and it played the video but no audio. Looked through the manual and started pressing the "audio" button on the remote. I scrolled through the audio menu and under "C0" there was the audio. Played great after that. I tried a MPEG 1 that I made with Pinnacle Studio 8 and it worked great too. JPG's on CD-R or CD-RW worked great, MP3's worked great, even tried my MPEG 1 on a PNY CD-R and mini-dvd on a CD-RW. The mini-dvd on the Memorex CD-RW was a little jerky once and a while.
Looked at the Norcent DP-300 again in the store and I am glad I picked the Philips, the finish quality looks much better, and the black mached my Sony stereo.
I will soon try some DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD+R.

That player is very good.
No freezing problems till now.
Also I don't understand why some people report that they are unable to fast forward. I can fast forward my SVCDs with 2x 4x and 6x
Can show jpeg pictures and mpeg movies from a normal data disk. Can rotate and zoom that jpeg pictures, using the remote. Reading of normal jpegs is relatively fast compared to some other models - Koss if I remember right, where it was very slowly, annoying. Showing of progressive jpegs however could be slow (depending on the size of the jpeg.
The JPEG pictures must have an extension .jpg and the MPEG movie clips must have an extension .mpg. All other extensions will not work - for example jpeg, mpeg, or whatever, they are just invisible in the file menu.
About DVD/VCD/SVCD/CVD -- will play NTSC disk on a NTSC TV and PAL disk on PAL TV, or any disk on a multisystem TV. I have an NTSC TV here, and even a nonstandard combination - (25fr/s, NTSC VCD disk) works. A little bit jerky but still acceptable. This is if you have a PAL camera and a NTSC TV, and you don't have enough time (like me) to convert the framerate. However everything which has more pixels than 352x240 and 25fr/s together is inacceptably jerky (I repeat on NTSC TV).
About the sound - if the video itself is OK, you can use any bitrate for the sound, stereo or mono or even without any sound and the video will play OK. Also MP3 coding of the sound of the movies works OK.
I repeat my overall evaluation is very high.
Now the odds - the case is not very sexy. It doesn't display what kind of disk you have inserted - VCD, SVCD, DVD or whatever. The screensaver is a very stupid picture, and it doesn't activate in some cases -- for example if you were browsing an mp3 disk and left the player in that file menu, it will stay for hours without activating the screensaver.
The remote is not very ergonomic, but it seems a common feature for most players. At least I have seen much worse.
After inserting a VCD it will take 5-6 seconds before displaying the menu. I expect this time to be shorter.
When I use the menu to go to a given moment of the movie, it is always wrong. For example I enter 70 minutes, it goes to the 66th minute of the movie. And the error is different for different VCD/SVCDs. For DVDs it works correct.
greetings,
Umen Pich

AUDIO all tracks on cdr/cdrw it worked fine
DVDs No problems
VCDs No problems (my copies on cd/r, which was the main reason I bought that machine in the first place)
SVCDs picture great, no freeze BUT no fastforward or reverse AND no menus. The video was created by using Pinnacle Studio v7.15.Used Nero (5.5.9.17)to burn, then tried burning with VCDEasy, then tried burning at minimum speed, nothing worked. Also downloaded latest firmware but the machine refused to upload from my cd/r.
No complaints whatsoever, not at that price at least

bought this player about a week ago. a few days later i got thinking i probably could have done better so i returned it. the next 3 players i brought home would not do what the Phillips 623 would do, so now i have it back again.
seems to play every format and media type i've thrown in it so far. i just downloaded the firmware upgrade, but won't flash it until (and if) i encounter problems.
i would recommend this player to anyone. |

Great player!
Bought it mainly for its svcd capability as well as for dvd. Had some problems with svcd (hacks, freezing)and no fast forward/rewerse.
WHY: 1: Some mpeg´s were renamed .dat files (wrong header). 2: Used Nero.
SOLUTION: 1: Use VCDEasy 1.1.2 to fix the mpeg-header(cdxa2mpeg) 2: Create a bin/cue file of the mpeg using VCDEasy. 3: Burn the bin/cue with the builtin CDRDAO-tool.
OUTCOME: Plays svcd without any hacks, freezes or problems with fast forward/rewerse!
IMPORTANT!: Do not use Nero to write the bin/cue as it will not write the "scan data" correct!
Hope this will help to enjoy this player even more. |
