This is a great DVD player, i was thrilled to find out that it plays NTSC and PAL even though the box did not mention this. As i was unable to quickly find the region free hack, this is the one that i have found to work with my dvd player:
using the remote that it came with:

* Open the tray NO DISC (can press and hold stop button)
* Press 2812 on the remote
* Continue pressing OK till you get 9 displayed on the screen
* Power off and switch on.
The player should now be region free "

I took the previous one that I bought that would not load DVD+RW and tried my disk in the Best Buy Demo machine and it worked fine. I asked the return clerk if I could try the boxed player that I exchanged the old one for and she set me up with the Geek Squad people and the opened the box, set it up and played my three test disks for me while I watched. I take back all the bad crap I've ever said or thought about Best Buy. They treated me great and now I have a player that works like it is supposed to. They also gave me the player for the open-box price that I paid for the last one ($40 instead of $50). I'm using the compenent video out and the picture looks as good as my old RV-31 panasonic player that is very picky loading new DVD+R 8x media. Every disk I stick in this Philips machine plays within 6 seconds. I am very pleased with it and hope it lasts.

I really like this player but will have to return it as it will not play and DVD+RW that I put in the player. My two other players (Panasonic RV-31, Apex ??) will play these disks fine. The reason that I bought the thing is because my Panasonic has trouble loading new 8x DVD+R media so I'm looking to replace it. This player loaded all the DVD+R media that the Panasonic would not load. I got this one as open stock at Best Buy for $10 less than the going rate. I'll try another in a few days. The box and the manual claim that this product will play DVD+RW media but I've tried about all the trick I know of and it will not work. This includes changing the mode bit, doing a full disk erase before recording and making sure that the disk is finalized. It just will not load a DVD+RW except for one time out of 20 it loaded a disk after spending 120 seconds thinking about it.

Bought this player about 3 years ago now, (hence the high price) for £199 in the UK. Have to say I've been very impressed with it since then and have been running it with no problems.
DVD playback is excellent, can't really comment on the audio due my feeble setup. Love the menus/remote, all nicely designed and laid out. No complaints at all.
Copes well with all sorts of media, just plays whatever you through at it really, CDR(W) of any brand play no probs (tried Sony, Memorex, Benq and FWS myself). SVCD's made in DVD2SVCD look very nice just with default settings. Most SVCD's won't FFD/REW, disc just stops instead. This is because of the old firmware I'm running, (never bothered to update, don't need to really). To navigate around SVCD's you can just use the 'System Menu > Time Search' option to jump to a specific time.
Ignore the guy who posted somewhere up there saying to burn at low speeds, this isn't necessary in my experience at all. Modern media/drives/software are designed to work at high speed, so burning slower actually increases the chances of errors. I've burned many brands of both CDR and CDRW at max speed with no problems, even really cheap stuff works fine. (Burning with Nero 5.5.7.2).
MP3 play back is also fine, happily plays back from folders from what i recall.

-To find out what firmware you're running-
Turn on player with no disc loaded.
Press 'System Menu' on the remote.
Go down into the first menu, 'User Preference Settings'.
Go down and accross into the last option, (containing 'acess control' and 'status window').
Go down to 'Help Text' at the bottom then press down once more, your firmware details should be displayed.

Hope thats of some use to someone.

I really like this player, but it doesen't play all my VCD's! Some VCD's start, the picture is perfect, but the sound starts to have problems and then the player can't read and all pauses.
I have to ffd it to start again but there are no sound!

I don't know what the h**l is wrong with it. The VCD's are made with Tmpgenc. but there is not wrong with all VCD's some of them play just fine.
I don't know what to do because the guarantee is out.

Comments:
It's a good DVD player for people who don't need too much extra's.
The way you have to browse with the remote is not good for me. Specially for SVCD you can not choose tracks by number, it refers to chapters but svcd doesn not have chapters (i think)
SVCD does not allow search functions.

Problems with VBR encoded SVCD with TMPGENc (hangs). I use CBR 2600 and that works fine.

mini-DVD is recognized as VCD thus not playable.

CVD is working. But I clearly see the difference with SVCD.

My unit has a PROM so no updates, only 4.15C on it but with macrovision. Regiofree hack worked using the special command and some numbers.
A big advantage is that the player can convert NTSC to PAL internal. Better picture you get on NTSC with an capable TV, but it's a nice option!

I can record directly from DVB streams using a Nokia MM9500 and SCSI. (big thanks to all the german whizkids who made this possible!!)

Unfortunately, those streams you cannot play directly without re-encoding on a SVCD disk.
(only some low-quality Italian channels can)

Therefore I did some tests:
Tricking the first header to 480x576 with DVB-Patcher. This was not necessary for DVD compliant resolutions.
544*576 wit original or re-encoded with lower bitrate does produce pictures but hangs.
re-encoded to 704*574 with 2600 bps does produce picture for a while and hangs.
So it looks like there is some buffer overflow after about 30 seconds I guess.

About the audio: no need to resample 48khz to 44.1. That is great because 48kHz is common on DVB. Set also the same bitrate (mostly 192 or 256)

I have also tried an "out of spec" SVCD with 384*576 (xCVD). Plays without problems, so I guess you can use any resolution dividible throug 16 under 480. I still want to test 31*16 and 32*16 with a lower bitrate.

Since I have no DVD writer (still too expensive) I could not test if DVB streams are accepted as out of standard DVD (in case of resolutions like 544*576)

I have tried once to put some jpg's on a video cd but that did not work. Maybe my fault, maybe someone can tell me how because this is also a nice option.

MP3 files playing good, only no titles. And a strange way of sorting: not AaBbCc but like the ASCII table on the PC. So watch out naming your mp'3 only with or without capitals if you don;t want to loos your file order. What I really miss is a Shuffle function!!

Conclusion: good value for money, good mainstream DVD player but for technical freaks which do things out of specs not the best choice.
Maybe with new soft but then I have to send it in for a PROM update.
MP3 plays but without titles and shuffle options.

Anyone who disagrees or has tips can send me a reaktion. Be aware of the fact that I use the 4.15 firm!

after having troubles with freezes and not able playing KVCD´s, i turned to www.Philips.com, mailed the problems. Within a few days i received an firmware update for free, which runs magnificent!

After flashing the software of the DVD622 (firmware 4.15), it is no doubt one of the best (X)VCD /(X)SVCD players. By the way, the KVCD templates for TMPGEnc works great. Subs of course using virtualdub, a superb frameserver.

The newest firmware 4.15.V-0 can be found @ http://www.euroservice.pfr.philips.com/assistance/dvd/sommaire.htm

However, this new firmware intruduces a mp3 playback problem, there's a slight "crack" before every track (just like playing a scrathy LP). Other firmware versions can be downloaded from http://philips.ianc.net/downloads.shtml, v.4.15.O-0 recommended (macro hack firmware didn't work for me either)

Comments:
I had my DVD622's firmware upgraded by Makro (where I bought it in February) without cost and within 9 working days (!!!). They upgraded to version 4.15-O. So, I burned a CD with version 4.15-V. Now watch this: the machine got stuck on the message "DLA E--OO", refusing to give back the CD, not responding to any button. That made me quite nervous...

Fortunately user Ogregod had the solution, which I perfected in the following detail:

1. Pull power plug
2. Hold "Open/Close" and "Stop" and simultaneously plug power back
3. "DSW 2-8" appears in the player display.
4. Hold the "Next" button 2 seconds every time, until "PSO TEST" appears in the display. Now press the "Play" button. Again hold the "Next" button 2 seconds every time, until "APP SND-2" appears. Push the "Stop" button. Hold "Next" 2 seconds, then the version appears in the display. Push "Next" one more time.
5. "DO BE TRAY" appears in the player display. Now hit "Play" and the tray magically opens
6. Remove the CD, hit "Play" again to close it
7. Remove power
8. Plug power back
9. WAIT until the player recovers and shuts down (display clear). You will see "DLA --" and "DLA ERROR" flashing before the shutdown. Do not worry, this is normal.
10. You are back where you were, with the same software that was in the player before the mishap. If you press the "Standby/On" button on the player, you will see it is back in normal operation.

I do not know why this happened. I burned a couple of other disks to test, and I always wound up with The worsed scenario: the repair crew installed another EPROM, instead of flash. And where older firmware simply gave you back the CD after a DLA error, the newer firmware keeps the CD... Without the above 10 steps you will be forced to bring the machine back for maintenance, containing proof that you were messing with the machine...

Any clues, anybody?

(A zillion thanx to Ogregod)

After reading everybody elses comments i must agree with the majority. For the people who are whinging about the small details of VCD menuing and such like, what do they expect for a sub £170 player? feeding of the 5000? pennies from heaven?

Its a great budget player that most small problems can be fixed by an official firmware upgrade.

These people should spend less time downloading pirated films/music and get out more and look at the big picture.

Love this player!

I upgraded the firmware and tested a few movies on it.

Where they would previously pause or jump, they were fine.

Previously there was no SVCD fast-forwarding or rewind allowed, this has become available now.

I would recommend this player (and firmware upgrade) to everyone, if they still made it!

Hay

The question in this reports is: what is the maximum bitrate for XSVCD ?

But my question is: What is the MINIMAL bitrate for XSVCD ? And what are the resolutions for SVCD this player plays ? The bitrate I tested is 512 kbits/s. The player works with standard SVCD.

I tried to burn XSVCD with VCD resolution to get entire movie on one CD. I used TMPGEnc and Nero. The resolution I choosed is optimal for my TV. It is possible to increase the resolution, and keep optimal bitrate to get about 2 hours movie on CD.
