| I got this DVD 612 for a while now, but every time i turn it on my tray opens and it says BLOCKED on the display, on the philips website they got a solution but it dont work, any ideas anyone on how to unblock this stuff? |

This player is very good. A few problems with the SVCD FF/RW can be easily solved by splitting the track into two pieces which must be under 40mins. (annoying i know - or you could do the firmware which apprently works )
VCD playing is a bit dodgy, doesn't alwyas play smooth and sometimes sound goes out of sync and i have to stop and fastforward to where i was.
Damn the XSVCD limit opf 2600 - hardly a difference from normal SVCD , but better than nothing
Minidvd does not play
I have anotoher dvdplayer the samsung m105 which doens't play in that great quality.... this philips one is very precise.. worth the buy (if you not wanting to do TOOO MUCH vcd/svcd burning)
But, having said that if i could turn back time and if i had known about all these wacky different formats i would not have bought this dvdplayer but one which plays nearly everything. This is agood for a beginner. |

Have had my DVD612/001 for about 2 years now and I am pleased with it.
DVDs play fine, I've not had any problems neither with bought DVDs nor rented.
It has some minor annoyances with the SVCD format, but it's no problem if you know how to make it work. Supported subtitle-type is SVCD.
It seems like this player is not too fond of VBR SVCDs. They play, but FF/RW does not work and apparently subtitles does not work either (my player just locked up).
SVCD with CBR works fine, both FF/RW and subtitles (used bbMPEG for encoding/muxing).
Couldn't get subtitles to work when cd was burned with Nero 5.x (not even after turning off PBC in player), but worked with VCDEasy/VCDImager.
VCD plays, period.
Have not tried burned DVDs, MP3, X(S)VCDs, JPEG.
Have tried a few different CD-RW brands, all played.
Have tried several CD-R brands, all played. |

| ive played tdk dvd+rs ive played disk planet disks,vivastar disks,octron disks,premium grade a disks,imation cdrs,maxell cd-rs,mr data cds witch r all dvd+rs vcds, and svcds and had no problems with the player at all and thats with no codes so who ever says these players dont play vcds or svcds or dvd+rs are telling u porkies cos ive played them all on this philips (612s) dvd player ok if u want to get in touch with me then u can e-mail me at loisty @hotmail.com ok thanks |

As far as rented-dvds or dvd-movies are concerned, there is nothing to say about this player. It plays.
As for SVCD and VCD, too.
The main problem with this machine is with home recorded dvds. The manual said that the machine "supports dvd+rw", without mentioning any other dvd formats. The question is: does it support *only* dvd+rw? Well, certainly not. I burned a dvd-rw and played it without a problem. So I thought, somehow naturally, that this would play also dvd-r. I tried two different dvd-r on it and it doesn't work (Intenso, Verbatim).
For my burner is a dvd-r/rw, I cannot try with dvd+r/rw to see if that works.
But it's hard to have an idea of what the player can do if you read the manual and try some tricks by yourself. First, this has been said here before, the 612s do read mp3, although the manual says it can't. Second, it reads dvd-rw, although the manual says it reads *only?* dvd+rw.
I you want to have a clear idea about this player before buying it, forget it.
I would be glad to read about people who have been able to play a dvd-r on this machine. |

Work's well with DVD:s, but freezes alot when playing svcds + you cant ff/rw.
Since I got the 612/001 player I can't flash with firmware, and therefore not fixing any of the bugs. Also my guarantee is out, so i can't leave the problem to the manufacturer.
I "Borrowed :)" an One4All-remote from a local store telling them i wasn't sure if it was compatible with my player, and got the RC6 code to make the player region-free. Worked very well. |

Bought this one more than 2 years ago. I have mixed feelings about this player.
It plays mp3 although not stated in the manual, but it has a real problems with vcd's. With movies it's doing ok but if I put like three episodes on one disc, the screen is freezing, the sound is out of sync.(slower than the picture)
I also think it has a big problem with rental DVD's because they are often dirty or scratched. When you clean the disc before playing it cures most of the problems. But the fact remains that the thing is too damn sensitve.
Right now, I'm thinking of buying me a cheap (JAP)DVD-player and saving myself a lot of hassles and frustration. |

I'm have the dvd612/001 and this one doesn't play svcd very well,on ff and rw it completely stops the movie.
tried to update the firmware but can't be done because no flash-rom was inside. Had to send it back twice, but even then the problem wasn't fixed.
Plays DVD's well but if you want to play svcd's DON'T Buy this deck! |

Player tested was the Silver DVD 612, has MP3 support even though the manual says otherwise.
The player works just fine for watching DVD movies, playing Audio CDs and playing MP3 CDs. However VCD playback is bad, it will randomly freeze up whilst playing, usually it then continues a few seconds later aswell as a few seconds later into the VCD, but sometimes a FF or RW is required to get it to continue playing. I only tried 1 SVCD with a few music videos on it. It didn't freeze while playing them, however I have read that others do experience the same freezing issue with SVCDs aswell. Also when FF or RW is pressed whilst watching an SVCD, it will freeze up and you can only resume playback from the beginning.
My father also bought this same model shortly after me, so when I first noticed the freezing problem I tried out his player and got the exact same result. Fortunately though, his player's firmware was upgradeable via a flash rom. The latest firmware fixes the SVCD FF & RW problem as well as clears up alot of the VCD/SVCD freezing. Still not perfect though, as some still do freeze up, though not as much as before.
I would not advise you to buy this player if you are planning to use VCD/SVCD, it just doesn't work properly. I just replaced my DVD 612 with a H & B 4420 Silver DVD Player. This is alot better and does just what I need without problems, it also has better MP3 functionality with ID3 support etc. etc. |

There are plenty of pro's about this player - but anyone who wants to buy it would probably like to know the con's: There are two I have experienced so far:
1. The "Open Tray" button is VERY slow to react - if you switch on the DVD Player and want to open the tray immediately - forget it - the DVD Player wants to look at whatever disc may or may not be in it already first. Bit annoying, but not too tragic.
2. This IS annoying: During VCD Playback I noticed the volume seems to dynamically alter according to whatever sound is beping played at any given time - it sounds a bit like the sound is going through an analog limiter- fortunately it doeesn't try to make quiet sounds louder to increads their audibility but it does tend to dynamically drop the volume on loud noises. If anyone else has noticed this or even (!?!) has a solution to the problem I would be really grateful to hear from you! Mailto: detoner.it@gmx.de |

| I have a DVD612 with firmware version 4.15-o-0. I've tried to change region code to 1 with the propietary remote control: press play, followed by 2, 7 and 4. The player display a series of dashes. Using the remote I press 005 000 128 156 and press Play. The player then restarts and th screen presents Yamaha instead of Philips and is Region Code 1. With 002 000 128 156 is Region Code 2 again but the Yamaha logo still appears. Why? |

I recently bought a Philips DVD612S/002. It only played a few DVD's on it but I'm satisfied with the results. Although one movie hang for a few seconds, but I think this was because the disc had scratches (it came from a video rental store).
Is this the same model as the DVD612 but in silver, or are there other differences?
What advantages do I get when I upgrade to the latest firmware 4.15.O-0? I now have 4.15.C.

Hi everyone
I'd just like to point out exactly WHY your DVD-612 doesnt play some vcd's........
When you download a vcd, rip the .dat file from the image and run it through NERO, in the "create a vcd" option.
If nero finishes checking the file and gives a "vcd is not standard, continue with burn or recode the file" msg, CANCEL the burn, as the vcd will jump and seem corrupted.
What you have to do is re-encode the file using tmpgenc or some other encoder to make it comply with standard settings.
This is why you vcd's arent working properly. After doing this, they will work fine.
Oh, and theres also a firmware upgrade to sort out that prob, and the svcd FF/RW problem.
Other than these two minor problems, this is a fantastic buy. |

| It has a problem with a few VCDS - but only very occasionally. I had a problem 1/2 way through spiderman disc one...all i did was copy disc one and play that....worked fine. This is the best value for money DVD player i have ever used. |
