Comments:
This player is very picky about what DVD-R it will play. It must be authored with a 100% DVD compliant authoring program and burnt the right way. Transcoders like DVD2ONE and DVDShrink will make DVD's that work with this player, IFOEdit compiled DVD's do not work. DVD-R burn't as UDF/ISO in Nero should work....don't use cheap brands of DVD media. DVD-RW does not work, aparently DVD+RW may work with a modified media identifier (have not tried this though)

Excelent player in all other respects...small compact size, excelent picture quality (no zoom). Was ~$500 Australian when I bought it...I believe it is no longer available (replaced with a schmick slot loading player that will play anything....similar dimensions with blue backlighting)

Comments:
I would give this player a higher rating if it were able to play DVD-R and be firmware upgradeable...otherwise this is a neat little unit with great quality.

Comments:
Got mine in Hong Kong. That I know of there are at least 3 variants of this model. The DVD570M/691 is Region 3, the DVD570M/931 is Region 6. Mine is a DVD570M/692 and is apparently region free. It is Multi Voltage, but came with a LARGE 3 pin plug, that I think is European in Origin. Simple cut off and add a North American 2 pin plug. During power on, Mode can be set to PAL or NTSC for the TV. I also have a dedicated VCD player in a AIWA Micro System. While the AIWA will play both NTSC and PAL VCDs, the Philips DVD570M/692 has picture roll when playing PAL VCDs. So only CON is that what every format is local to you, you would not be able to play VCDs for the other format. Conversion on a computer with software fixes this.

Also, you can turn off playback control and autoplay in the menu. But when the player is turned off, or put in standby, it forgets that you turned them off. Also when playback is automatic, no TIME is displayed on the unit. Only with autoplay off, or PBC off will you see play time info on the unit display.

Otherwise a nice unit, easy to use and very compact.

Comments:
Excellent product except that the remote control is needed for most functions. No Us $ price is entered as I live in Australia and have no idea of us pricing.
