I have loaded firmware version 9.28. Still I can't get it to read my DVD-R media. I have tried Maxell dvd-r as well as Philips dvd-r.
Can anyone advise what to try next???
I may just toss this and get a new HD-upconverter player if I can't get it to play dvd-r. |

| I have owned this dvd player for somthing like four years and it hasnt failed me to this day. I recently purchased a NEC ND2500A DVD burner and attempted a DVD backup using TDK DVD-R (purple bottom) Media and it booted up on the player with no problems, I myself was quite suprized because the dvd player (minus the region free hack) is 100% OEM with no firmware updates or anything. This dvd player was well worth the money that i spent so long ago and i predict it will be for a long time to come. The only thing about this dvd player that keeps it from getting a 10 is the habbit it has of pausing for a split second while changing layers on slightly worn out dvds. I hope this review helps whoever reads it. |

For those having audio sync problems with standard SVCDs, I've noticed in trying to produce them (from DV sources) that the audio will "go too fast" for about a second when play is started (either from a stop, or after rewinding or fast forwarding, for example) which causes the audio to go out of sync. As mentioned by a couple of other people, the solution is to hit pause and then hit play again, after the audio has gone from "too fast" to the proper speed.
However, the trick to producing SVCDs that don't require this annoying audio sync fix is to use audio encoded at 48 khz (instead of the SVCD standard 44.1 Khz). It works, but unfortunately now your SVCD is not compliant... |

I bought this DVD player in summer of 2000 I believe, so I guess it is a bit out dated. I gave it a 5 becasue this DVD player is great for just plain old DVDs and CDs, but you will have a struggle with VCDs, SVCDs and DVDr. What I dont like about it is, if you turn on the subtitles, you have to stop the disc and go into set up to turn them off, instead of just simply hitting the subtitle button again to turn it off.. Another complaint is its not versitle enough. Granted its a little bit old but aside from DVDs and CDs, it doesnt get the job done. VCDs played fairly well, but SVCDs eith didnt play at all, or had problems reading and resulted in lots of skipping and staling. The menues are hard to say. Some work but some do not. I think a few SVCDs I have, the menue was poorly put together so I dont want to base it primarily on that. Burned DVDs play some what ok, but kind of the same story as SVCD. Theres a lot of skipping and staling, but does play them a little better than SVCDs. Cant really tell you what brand of DVDr works best becasue I have had limited success with DVDr period, no matter what the brand.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a player to just play DVD and/or CDs, then this works just fine. But if you are looking to play VCDs, SVCDs, or DVDr, then I would advise against this player. For more versatility, at a good price, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recomend Sony DVP NS715P.
Feel free to email me with any questions. |

My player is about 3 years old. Just recently I started to explore all the features besides CD and standard DVD.
So far SVCD worked without any problems! What I really struggle with are the DVD-Rs. I use a Pioneer 105 DVD writter with Nero Express software.
What I know so far is, that DVD-Rs do work on this player. At least the movies I burned with DVD Decryptor with 1x speed work flawlessly. Any other software failed to write DVD-Rs which the player can read. I updated to the latest Philips firmware but it did not help.
At this point I know that DVDxCopy, InstantCopy and Nero have faild to write working DVD-Rs. I currently think it has to do with the file format UDF/ISO9660. I also observed that it is not related to the DVD-Rs I use. DVD Decryptor works even with very cheap disks. |

Mine doesn't like SVCDs. Don't know why. This unit DOES play DVD-R. The main report is incorrect as others have already noted. No WMA/MP3/DiVX support; this DVD player came out way before all that stuff got huge.
I bought this thing a long time ago, so my firmware version is very outdated... probably why it has problems with SVCD. VCDs work fine, I also hacked this for all-region, I haven't had any trouble with it, and I've thrown tons of R2/R3 discs at it.
Doesn't play PAL VCDs. You need to covnert them to NTSC in order to view them (this is the "rolling picture" probelm many of you have).
No progessive scan or component out, but who cares. It's still a solid player. Has digital coax/optical out as well as SVideo out. Good enough as a secondary player, and will play damn near anything and everything you throw it at.
Recommended. |

This was an awesome DVD player when I got it 3 years ago. However, when ranking it today, it sux! This plays almost no formats other than actual DVD's and music CD-Rs. The price of converting my 8mm home movies to DVD just increased by the price of a new DVD player.

I just made a DVD to DVD+R of Run Lola Run using an HP DVD Writer DVD200e and HP DVD+R Media. It worked great!. The Memorex DVD+R media did not work on this dvd or anyother dvd that I tried.
I used Smartripper and Nero 5.5.9 to make the copy. It took me about 13 minutes to Rip the DVD and 23 minutes to burn it.
The HP DVD200e that I'm using is connected to a Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop via the 1394 cable (Firewire). My computer has 512 Mgs of Ram, 30gig harddrive, and a P3 1.2ghz M. |

Lately I have been using standard CompUSA 80min disks.
Using VCDEASY 1.1.2 as author of bin/cue and burning with Nero 5.x...
NOTE: Player did not play XVCD until I started re-multiplexing with TMPGENC and choosing the VideoCD standard headr.
Also on the audio sync problem with SVCD'S if you just mute/unmute the audio using the Dvd Remote the audio will syny back up and stay in sync for the duration of the movie. |

| OK I earlier posted a problem with playing vcd's and svcd's...the screen rolled in black and white...tried switching the DVD to PAL...screen rolled still! Upgraded the firmware...still nothing...Someone replied after reading my delemma and stated that I needed to convert all my vcd's and svcd's from ntsc to pal using TMPEG...did it and it worked...however this is a long and painful process...so I went out and spent $65.00 and bought an APEX 1200 (label that states VCD on it)...it plays everything PAL or NTSC...no conversions! no wasted time!! Keep the philips for DVDs buy a APEX for SVCD's and VCD's! |

I have recently upgraded firmware to 9.28. I havent't seen any changes in my vcd playing experience from version 9.25 to 9.28. Sometimes I had scrolling problems with my vcd on a CD-R, but discovered that the fps and size were not correct for burning vcds. My procedure now for burning vcds is as follows:
1.Use TMPGEnc to check video size and fps.
2.Also check audio frequency and kbps.
3.If mpeg is not 350x240 @ 29.97fps, and 44.1 @ 224kbps, then I use TMPGEnc to encode the mpeg properly.
4.Use DuraBrand CD-R 700MB 80 min.
5.Burn VCD using Prassi Primo CD Plus 2.0 on a Sony 24x10x40 CDRW.
After several firmware versions, software packages, and CD-R brands, I have found this procedure to work for me each and every time. Hope this is some useful info. I have had my Philips DVD825 for 3 years now, and will not buy another until this breaks. |

| Bought it a while ago and it works great! Had problems at first with a rolling screen, but later found out that it wasn't the DVD player, it was the Region. Found a hack for region with my 5-in-1 remote control. Still didn't work. Later, I realized I have an American made television that won't suport PAL. Converted all my movies to NTSC with Tmpeg, burned with Nero, now EVERYTHING works great. NICE picture. You can't tell the difference between DVD and SVCD. AWESOME. Haven't rented a movie in a year. |

Only does not get a 10 because it does not support MP3. This player came out before the first wave of CD-based MP3 players anyhow.
DVD-R works!
I saw a *lot* of posts here that said this drive was not DVD-R compatible, and I saw a compatability chart somewhere which "confirmed" this limitation. So I bought my brand-new DVR-104 drive from ESBuy knowing a 100% likelihood of incompatability -- I would have to buy a new DVD movie player.
Was I pleasantly surprised!! :-D
I just backed up a DVD to my hard drive, then to the DVD-R and it worked the very first time. This movie doesn't have fancy features so it easily fits in the 4.7GB DVD-R disks. All the menus worked fine.
I know from my CD days that problems people had are due to TOLERANCES in players and media. Take my post as proof -- if a player does not work with DVD-R, try OTHER types of DVD-R media. These DVD blanks I got came free with my DVD-R, and and a "lilac purple" color on the media side. If you have a DVD-825, try another batch of disks from ESBuy. I have no idea if other blank disks will work in my video player. |
