This player is great, it plays almost everything I put in. The only thing I hate is when the disc is in error, it automatically just ejects, so you dunno what actually went wrong. But so far that happens only when the original is already a bad one. I burnt using Nero and Ulead, all brand, even unbranded one like Sonic works with this player. So I gave it a 9.

nice sized DVD player and looks good. two years ago, i brought it all the way back from a vacation in china -- i liked it that much!

i used the hack code to make the player region free, and turned off the screen saver so that it would not automatically shut off.

as for DVD media, i was able to successfully burn and watch DVD+RW (Memorex 2.4x) discs, but for DVD-R (Ridata 4x) it seemed to only play the first hour or so of the disc. then it would start to stall and freeze up, even on menu screens. i know nothing about DVD media but the Ridata -R was a deep purple color whereas the Memorex was a faint blue, and looked more like the normal silver color of DVDs. that's my silly speculation as to why the +RW worked but -R didn't. :D

Of all the players i have had this is the best by far, I got this in the uk from Woolworths with Surround Speakers and Sub (They're not bad but I am goung to upgrade them as soon as money will allow) This will play anything, a bit out of date now but if Philips can improve on this £££ I WILL BUY £££
For the Techies I'm listing the audio connections
5.1 Coax
5.1 Optical
5.1 RCA - Pretty neat
5.1 Legacy Philips Conn

No RF Output though
you won't be disappointed

my girlfreind got me this player a couple christmas's ago. Works great for any vcd or svcd i have tried to play with any brand iv'e tried to play. It has the capability to show jpegs and play mp3s from data. However I just got a dvd burner and tried tdk dvd-r and sony dvd+r neither would play. I burned using dvdxcopy xpress maybe this is an issue. Still I love the player.

Just picked this up at Super Walmart. They had it marked down to $70 but it came up at the register at $50. Cannot beat that price for such a sturdy little unit anywhere. Plays everything I put in it so far, vcd, svcd, dvd+r, dvd-r. Its replacing an Apex changer that started to get jittery on playing anything, and was getting noisy too (Guess single disc players are the way to go). Like the slot design and the unit, though small feels very rugid, and is incredibly quiet. Wouldn't know it was on without its front panel. At this price, highly recommended.

Comments:
I have had the Philips DVD 580M (the site says this is the same as the 580MT) for almost a year now, after buying it at a Target store. If you can buy this, DO IT, it's worth every penny. At first I only purchased this unit to carry with me on longer out- of- town trips with some of my backed up DVDs on DVD-R media (many different brands) burned with DVD2OneX on Macintosh DVD +/- writers (using SONY DR-U10A and Lite-On something or other) burning with Toast 5.2 and Toast 6. The Philips DVD 580M has played all of the DVDs I have inserted and played each one without fail. This is a sweetheart of a unit, one that I couldn't have imagined would have played as many different disks (Ritek, Digital Matrix, Fuji, Memorex, Lead Data, SONY, Princo, and even a double- sided 9.4 GB disk, which could be called UL-Tran (I'm not certain but it's an darker- colored purple disk). I don't know about Maxell, which one reviewer says doesn't work because I have heard feedback that some of the well- known media has been shaky with playback, and it's too expensive, anyway.

This unit is solidly- built, heavy (I actually like this because it feels very strong) with a metal case. And it's a gorgeous unit. Hold this baby in your hands compared to many other DVD players that are much larger, and the others just feel... cheap. It has the connections for composite video -- the 3- color RCA connections of red/blue/green -- plus the single component RCA connection (yellow) and also the S-video. Digital Coax out and optical out. Plus, two different multichannel 5.1 audio out connections. One cool feature is that you don't need an external digital receiver to decode 5.1 Dolby and DTS to enjoy DTS and Dolby digital DVDs. Purchase a 5.1 speaker set that have RCA connections (I've seen them listed for under $80) into the back of the player, and you've got digital stereo. The back of the unit is labeled very easy for connecting.

Another great thing is the availability to hack a code to make your player region free! I have tried it and it does work. Press the eject button on the player (the remote has none). Then press the numbers 1,3,5,6... and "region code xxxx" shows up on the screen. Press 0, then "stop" around 5 times and the region code's x's change to a zero... giving you a region- free player. You may need to input this as the player turns itself off, but what the hay. It's better than searching for a region- free player to purchase.

Final note: The player works with many but not all VCDs I have tried. I gave the 580M a perfect score. One picky drawback is that I sometimes want the unit to stay on, but it can be quick sometimes to power down on its own if no DVD is in the unit, or if the DVD doesn't have an animated menu playing.

Looking for a player that played VCD/SVCD DVD+R/W and DVDs burned as MPEG1,2 by Roxio DVD Creator 6. This unit handled all with no problem and progressed from mpeg to mpeg with the next button. Just got it today at Target and will play with it for awhile but so far it has done exactly what I wanted after looking all around for a unit with all these features. Also easy set-up plenty of output choices and generally a good lookin very small unit. paid $129.00 not bad

Simply AMAZING!!! But then again, I'm used to struggling with my DVP-S570D from Sony. Damn thing played only ONE spindle (100) of Blue generic CD-R's. After that I had to resort back to CD-RW at friggin 4X burn times. Hence, the reason why the 580 came home with me today. This baby will eat anything I feed her. I tried 4 types of generic CD-R's and 3 types of brand name (Verbatim, TDK, and Memorex) - ALL WORKED flawlessly for both SVCD and VCD. CD-RW's (generic and Memorex) worked as expected for both VCD and SVCD. Burn speeds: 48x and 52x for CD-R, and 4x and 8x for CD-RW's.
This machine's ability to play mpg/mp3/jpg files is definately a plus as well. Burned a few vid's along with mp3's and jpg's. Worked fine in both UDF and Standard ISO formats. The menu system is a bit archaic but does the job.
As far as the remote goes.....it doesn't. I have to give it to Sony when it comes to remotes, but the Philips remote definately serves it's purpose.
Image quality is definately much better than my Sony for both VCD and SVCD.
I recommend this unit to anyone looking for full compatiblity as far as CD-R/RW is concerned.

Finally! I've been buying dvd players left and right (2 sonys & 1 mintek 1600), just trying to get one to play my vcds and svcds. This one works like a charm. Plays everything I put in it. It's well built and compact. Media I've used: Memorex 700mb 1-4x cd-rw, Memorex 700mb cd-r, Digital Media 650 mb CD-R,& Bulk generic silver/blue cd-r from ioproducts. I've tested vcd, svcd, mp3, mpg, jpg. Some burned with Nero, and some burned with Easyvcd. I haven't had an need to do the region hack yet. Only downside was it would not resume when movie stopped. Paid 129.99 @ Target.

I love this player. I just bought a second one for the bedroom. wonderful compatibility will all media. I love the fact that I can burn Mpegs to the disc with no authoring and plays great. Bought the first one at Wal-Mart for $129 2/03 and the second one from Target for $99 5/03. Have had no problems what so ever. I like the unit better than my Apex ad-1500.

<Complaints>

When I play svcd I can't using search function on remote controller. It works bad. If I press search button on remote controller and press 11:30 than play 4:20 or some where. But in case of vcd 11:33.

2. jpeg slide show
Can not change jpeg slide show interval time.
some dvd player has manualy changed interval time.

<Satisfactions>
1. Vibration
When vibrate in car no problem at play any media(dvd, vcd, svcd or mp3).

2. small footprint
3. very cool design
4. slot insert type
5. excited about the RCA 5.1 outputs.

I have burned about 10 DVD Back-ups with DVDXCopy (and Nero Burning Rom that is built-in to DVDXCopy) on Maxell DVD-R media and this player would not recognize them. I have two other players that do, but was looking for a player to keep in my van. Any good rugged DVD player sugestions out there?

Interesting to note that initially my DVD-R's came up with a "wrong region" message. The region hack worked only to give me a disk error. It seems it thought my Disks were Region 4 discs. I burned them from Region 1 discs.

MP3 CD playing format far from acceptable.. it only reads the first 8 letters of the song (as is the norm, I guess), but here's what really gets me: you can only move down the list one song at a time (no page up/down) and you can't scroll when a song is playing! Rediculous, but then again, that's just my opinion. DVD/VCD/SVCD works very well.

Just a note, I stuck in an SVCD with multiple movies (episodes, in this case) and it did not play. It was recognized by the player, and it saw the tracks, but wouldn't play. Improper formatting, maybe? I didn't create the discs, they came from a friend.

See my review also of the DVD 724.

Confirmed remote hack works without effecting performance other than PAL region 2 DVDs playback excessive interlace artifacts in any action scenes if you have unit set to Hi-Res.

Played VCDs and SVCDs that my Malata N996 or a demo Onkyo LSV950 would not play.

No subtitle hangup like the 724 did during playback of Region 1 DVD "Starwars Attack of the Clones".

Excited about the 5.1 outputs.

Compact unit with unique slot feed. Probably good at removing some F.O.D. from disc as well, before contaminating internal workings.

Horizontal and vertical design very clever and stable with included screw-in metal (not plastic!) stand. Unit is very compact although I still extremely dislike external power supplies although this unit's supply is in-line and not a space grabbing wall wart!

Appears to be a robust unit and it still daunts me that Target of all places is selling such a quality product! Especially with a remote zone-free hack that works!
